A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.
On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]
The UK Ministry of Defence reported that the Russian authorities have been directed to build Russian identity and increase the use of the Russian language in the territory it illegally occupies in Ukraine, according to a decree signed by Russian President Putin, published on 25 November 2025.
The document, titled 'Strategy of Russia's national policy in the period to 2036, highlights a continued Russification policy, forcing Russian language, identity and culture on to the residents of sovereign Ukrainian territory. The policy forms part of Russia's longstanding efforts to extirpate Ukrainian culture and identity, and delegitimise Ukrainian statehood.
Russia now defines both occupied and unoccupied Ukrainian territory in the Ukrainian oblasts of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, as well as Crimea, as being part of the Russian Federation. This directly contradicts Russia's own formal recognition of Ukraine's independence and sovereignty following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The document's reference to these sovereign Ukrainian oblasts as 'historical territories of the Russian state' emphasises the overtly imperialist aspect of Russia's continuing efforts to subjugate Ukraine.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that in total, since the beginning of this day, there have been 231 encounters.
Russian Zagarbniki have succeeded 25 aviation strikes, dropping 78 controlled air bombs. In addition, the Russians have engaged 1727 kamikaze drones and carried out 2,535 shelling positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements.
In the North Slobozhansky and Kursky directions, Ukrainian soldiers repelled eight Russian assault actions since the beginning of the day. The Russian enemy also launched two air strikes using six controlled air bombs and carried out 121 shelling.
In the South Slobozhansky direction, the Russian opponent attacked the positions of Ukrainian defenders six times and received a blockade near Vovchansky, Barnny and Dvorichansky.
In the Kupyansky direction, Russian units carried out six assault actions, trying to break through the positions of Ukrainian defenders in the direction of settlements Petropavlivka, Mala Shapkivka, Pishchnya, Novoplatonivka. One battle is still going on.
In the Lyman direction since the beginning of the day, Russian zagarbniki 29 times attacked the positions of Ukrainians near the settlements of Grekivka, Karpivka, Novoyegorivka, Medium, Novoselivka, Shandrigolove, Torske and towards the New Peace, Glushchenkovy, Druzhelyubivka, Olgivka, Pond, Drobishevo, Oleksandrivka. At the moment, Ukrainian defenders repel the Russian attacks in nine locations.
In the Slovenian direction, Russian forces tried to break through 13 times in the areas of settlements Yampil, Dronivka, Serebryanka, Viymka, Fedorivka and in the direction of Zakitny. One battle is still going on.
In the Kramatorsky direction, there were three clashes in the area of Chasovoy Yar and in the direction of Bondarnoy, one of which is still ongoing.
In the direction of Konstantinivsk, Russians attacked the positions of Defense Forces 27 times. The efforts of the attack were concentrated in the directions of Konstantinivka, Ivanopil, Stepanivka and in the areas of the settlements of Pleschievka, Rusin Yar. One confrontation is currently underway.
Since the beginning of the day in the Pokrovsky direction, Russian units 58 times tried to break through Ukrainian defense in the areas of settlements Shahove, New Shahove, Zatishok, Chervonyi Liman, Rodinske, Mirnograd, Novoekonomíčne, Píčnna, Zvirove, Kotline, Udačne, Molodetske, Novomikolaivka, Dachne and in the directions of Grishiny and Novopavlivka. Four fighting clashes are going on so far.
Defense Forces deter Russian attacks, the Russian enemy suffers significant losses - today 150 Russian invaders have been defecated in this direction, of which 108 are irrevocable. Ukrainian defenders destroyed an infantry fighting vehicle, nine motor vehicles, six unmanned aircraft, a special equipment unit and two occupant shelters, also struck two motor transport units, two special equipment units and 12 Russian personnel shelters.
In the Oleksandrivsky direction, Ukrainian units stopped 19 Russian attacks on the positions of Ukrainian troops near the settlements of Yalta, Andriyivka-Klevtsove, Verbove, Privilne, Ribne, Green Grove, Piddubne, Vorone, Stepove, Krasnogirsk and in the direction of Oleksiyivka.
In the Gulyaipil direction, Ukrainian defenders stopped 16 Russian attempts to advance near settlements of Zatishya, Solodke, Chervone and in the direction of settlements of Dobropillya, Pryluki, Varvarivka, Gulyaipole. The four Russian attacks are still going on. Aviation strikes were hit by settlements of Ternuvate and Gulyaipole.
In the Orihivsky direction, Ukrainian units stopped seven Russian attacks on the positions of Ukrainian troops in the direction of Novoandriyivka, Stepnogirsk, Primorsky and in the area of Kamiansky and Stepovoye. Another battle is underway.
In the pridniprovsk direction, the Russian opponent did not carry out offensive actions, but caused an air strike on pridniprovs Наkomu.
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation continue the special military operation.
The Sever Group of Forces inflicted fire damage on formations of two mechanised brigades, an air assault brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and a territorial defence brigade near Sadki, Mogritsa, Miropolye, Alekseyevka, and Andreyevka (Sumy region).
In Kharkov direction, units of a mechanised brigade, a motorised infantry brigade, an assault regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and a national guard brigade have been hit near Volchansk, Vilcha, Staritsa, and Udy (Kharkov region).
The enemy lost more than 135 troops and 12 motor vehicles.
The Zapad Group of Forces improved the tactical situation. Strikes were delivered at manpower and hardware of an assault brigade, three mechanised brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, a territorial defence brigade, and a national guard brigade near Kurilovka, Boguslavka, Novoplatonovka, Podoly, Nechvolodovka, Blagodatovka (Kharkov region), Yarovaya, and Drobyshevo (Donetsk People's Republic).
The enemy losses amounted to up to 235 troops, eight armoured fighting vehicles including three U.S.-made HMMWV armoured vehicles, one U.S.-made 155-mm M777 howitzer, 21 motor vehicles, ten electronic warfare stations, one U.S.-made AN/TPQ-50 counter-fire radar, and two ammunition depots.
As a result of resolute actions, the Yug Group of Forces liberated Vasyukovka (Donetsk People's Republic).
Russian troops inflicted damage on formations of two mechanised brigades, a mountain assault brigade, an airmobile brigade, an assault brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine near Seversk, Zakotnoye, Kirovo, Bondarnoye, Berestok, Minkovka, Nikolayevka, Ivanopolye, Stepanovka, and Konstantinovka (Donetsk People's Republic).
The enemy lost more than 230 troops, a tank, seven armoured fighting vehicles including two U.S.-made HMMWV armoured vehicles, 15 motor vehicles, a Grad MLRS, and six artillery guns including three Western-made artillery pieces. A U.S.-made AN/TPQ-36 counter-fire radar, an Israel-made RADA radar, an electronic warfare station, and seven ammunition, materiel, and fuel depots were neutralised.
The Tsentr Group of Forces improved the situation along the front line. Russian elements inflicted losses on manpower and hardware of a heavy mechanised brigade, three mechanised brigades, an airmobile brigade, an air assault brigade, an assault brigade, two assault regiments of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, a marine brigade, and two national guard brigades close to Priyut, Novoaleksandrovka, Sergeyevka, Novy Donbass, Rodinskoye of the Donetsk People's Republic, Mezhevaya, and Novopavlovka (Dnepropetrovsk region).
In Krasnoarmeysk (Donetsk People's Republic), assault groups of the 2nd Army are successfully advancing northwards in Tsentralny and Dinas districts. Russian troops continue mopping up Ukrainian militants in Rovnoye (Donetsk People's Republic).
Eight attacks of the 425th Assault Regiment and the 95th Air Assault Brigade of the AFU in order to unblock an encircled Ukrainian group were repelled from the area of Grishino (Donetsk People's Republic). Up to 30 troops, a U.S.-made M113 armoured personnel carrier, and a Swedish-made Viking armoured fighting vehicle have been neutralised.
In Dimitrov (Donetsk People's Republic), assault detachments of the 51st Army continue to push the enemy out of Vostochny and Zapadny districts, and southern part of the town. One hundred and seventeen buildings have been liberated.
Over 275 servicemen, a tank, four armoured fighting vehicles, and a pickup truck have been neutralised during the day in Krasnoarmeysk direction.
In total, more than 465 troops, a tank, nine armoured fighting vehicles, and five motor vehicles have been neutralised in the Tsentr Group's area of responsibility.
The Vostok Group of Forces continued advancing into the depth of enemy defence. One mechanised brigade, two assault brigades, three assault regiments of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and two territorial defence brigades have been hit near Vozdvizhenka, Malinovka, Dobropolye, Gulyaypole (Zaporozhye region), and Otradnoye (Dnepropetrovsk region).
The AFU losses amounted to up to 210 troops, two tanks, 14 motor vehicles, a self-propelled artillery system, and an electronic warfare station.
The Dnepr Group of Forces inflicted losses on manpower and hardware of a mechanised brigade, a mountain assault brigade, a coastal defence brigade of the AFU near Novoandreyevka, Stepnogorsk (Zaporozhye region), Antonovka, Otradokamenka, Nikolskoye (Kherson region), and Kherson.
Up to 80 troops, 15 motor vehicles, five electronic warfare stations, and three ammunition, materiel, and fuel depots have been neutralised.
Operational-Tactical Aviation, attack UAVs, Missile Troops and Artillery of the Russian Groups of Forces have inflicted damage on warehouses and command posts of unmanned aerial vehicles, a satellite communication centre, Ukrainian energy facilities used by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as temporary deployment areas of Ukrainian armed formations and foreign mercenaries in 148 areas.
Air defence systems shot down five guided aerial bombs, eight U.S.-made HIMARS MLRS projectiles, a Neptune long-range missile, and 263 fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles.
In total, since the beginning of the special military operation the enemy has lost 668 aircraft, 283 helicopters, 99,114 unmanned aerial vehicles, 638 anti-aircraft missile systems, 26,294 tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles, 1,621 MLRS combat vehicles, 31,587 field artillery guns and mortars, and 47,814 units of support military vehicles have been neutralised.
