A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.
On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]
The UK Ministry of Defence reported that in October 2025 Russia launched approximately 5,300 one way attack uncrewed aerial systems (OWA UAS) at targets across Ukraine, a moderate decrease from the 5,500 OWA UAS Russia launched in September 2025. It is highly likely that Russia's October 2025 launch rate was moderately reduced due to worsening weather conditions. Weather-resultant lull periods were often followed by peaks during which approximately 400-650 OWA UAS were launched in a single night.
Russian UAS present a significant challenge to Ukrainian air defence, particularly when combined with the short range ballistic missiles also launched in significant numbers. It is almost certain that Russia aims to saturate targets including military industry and airfields to both maximise damage and increase the survivability of premier missiles.
Russia's Long Range Aviation (LRA) bomber tempo also slowed in October 2025, likely linked to weather conditions and other priority tasking, specifically the culmination of Russia's training/testing season. While four LRA strike packages were observed in October 2025, they were limited in their missile expenditure, predominantly using the unreliable AS-24 KILLJOY air launched ballistic missile instead of their premier AS-23 KODIAK air launched cruise missile. Russia's primary target for LRA has been energy critical national infrastructure at least since the beginning of October 2025.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that in total, since the beginning of this day, there have been 185 combat clashes.
