Russo-Ukraine War - 23 August 2025 - Day 1277

A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the Defense Forces are directing efforts to disrupt the execution of Russian invaders' offensive plans and exhaust their combat potential.

Since the beginning of the day, there have been 134 combat clashes, the opponent made 45 aviation strikes, dropped 81 cab. In addition, Russian forces used 1439 kamikaze drones, carried out 3169 shells of settlements and positions of Ukrainian troops.

In the North Slobozhansky and Kursky directions, Ukrainian soldiers repelled two Russian assault actions since the beginning of the day. Also, the enemy launched five air strikes using 17 controlled air bombs, and carried out 165 shells.
In the South Slobozhansky direction, the Russian enemy tried to attack the positions of Ukrainian units in the areas of the settlements of Vovchansk, Ambarné and towards Zelenoy, five attacks were repelled by Ukrainian units, one fight is currently ongoing.
Two attacks were repelled by Ukrainian defenders in the Kupyansky direction in the Zagrizovoye district and in the direction of Kupyansk.
In the Lyman direction, Ukrainian soldiers stopped eight attacks of Russian zagarbnikív in the areas of settlements Grekivka, Ridkodub, Kolodyazi, Mirne and towards Shandrigolovoy, Dronivka, Serebryanka. Five fighting clashes are ongoing.
In the Sivers ,komu direction, the Russian opponent carried out eight offensive actions in the areas of Grigorivka, Pereíznogo, Fedorivka and in the direction of Siversk.
In the Kramators Краkomu direction, Ukrainian defenders stopped 11 Russian attempts to advance in the area of the Time Jar and in the direction of Markovoye, Stupočok, Predtečinyogo, White Mountain. Two clashes are underway.
In the Toretsky direction, the Russian occupiers today stormed the positions of Ukrainian defenders nine times in the area of Scherbinivka and in the direction of Pleschievka, Katerinivka, Poltavka and Popovoy Yar. The defense forces are steadily suppressed the pressure and repelled all offensive actions of the Russian enemy.
The enemy committed 40 attacks in the Pokrovsky direction. The Russian occupiers tried to advance near the settlements of Mayak, Nikanorivka, New Shahove, Red Lyman, Novoekonomíčne, Peace-loving, Dry Yar, Fox, Zvirove, Kotline, Udaachne, Gorihove Novoukrainka and towards the settlements of Rodinske, Pokrovsk, Balagan, Molodetske, Philia. The five fighting clashes are still ongoing.
According to preliminary calculations, today in this direction Ukrainian warriors eliminated 67 Russian invaders and another 40 - wounded. Destroyed a mortar, 16 BPLA, three BPLA control points, two cars, one motorcycle, a REB device and a cannon damaged, a special equipment unit, three BPL control points and six bunkers for the Russian enemy's personnel.
In the Novopavlovsky direction, Ukrainian units stopped 19 Russian attacks in the areas of settlements Vilne Pole, Maliivka, Voskresenko, Temirivka, Olgivka and towards Ivanivka, Zaporizhky, eight combat clashes are ongoing.
The Russian enemy did not carry out offensive actions in Gulyaipilsky and Orihivskky directions.
In the Pridniprovsky direction, two Russian attempts to advance at the position of Ukrainian units have failed.t
