Russo-Ukraine War - 17 August 2025 - Day 1271

A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that in total, since the beginning of this day, there have been 127 combat clashes. Ukrainian defenders are decisively intercepting the attempts of the Russian enemy to advance deep into Ukrainian territory, giving him a fiery impression.

Today, Russian troops launched 52 aviation strikes, dropping 86 controlled air bombs. In addition, 1611 kamikaze drones were involved in strikes and carried out 3607 shelling of positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements.

In the North Slobozhansky and Kursky directions, Ukrainian soldiers repelled two Russian assault actions since the beginning of the day. In addition, the enemy launched 9 air strikes, dropping 23 controlled air bombs, and carried out 150 shelling positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements, seven of which were from reactive systems of arson-fire.
In the South Slobozhansky direction, the Russian enemy three times stormed the positions of Ukrainian units in the Vovchansk district and in the direction of the settlement of Hatnje, one fight is ongoing.
In the direction of Kupyansky, the Russian aggressor carried out offensive actions in the areas of the settlements of Zapadne, Kindrashivka, Petropavlivka, Stepova Novoselivka and in the direction of the Kupyanska. Five out of nine attacks were fought by Ukrainian soldiers, fighting continues.
In the Lyman direction, Russian invaders attacked 13 times the positions of Defense Forces near Grekivka, Karpivka, Ridkoduba and Grigorivka and in the direction of the settlements of Drobisheve, Yampil, Kolodyazi, eight fighting are still ongoing.
Four enemy assaults repelled Ukrainian defenders in the Siversky direction - the Russian occupiers tried to advance in the areas of Grigorivka, Fedorivka and Vyimka.
In the Kramatorsk direction, Russian forces tried to break through the defense of Ukrainian defenders three times in the direction of settlements of Oleksandro-Shultine and Bila Gora.
In the Toretsky direction, eight times the Russians went into offensive on the positions of Ukrainian units in the areas of Toretsk, Sherbinivka and towards Oleksandro-Shultiny, Pleshiyivka, Rusynoy Yar. One confrontation is still going on.
In the Pokrovsky direction since the beginning of the day, the Russian occupiers 42 times tried to advance on the position of Ukrainian units. Russian forces attacked in the areas of settlements Poltavka, Vilne, New Shahove, Zapovidne, Novoekonomíčne, Mirolyubivka, Novoukrainka, Lisivka, Zvirove, Kotline, Udaachne, Dachne and in the direction of Volodymyrivka, Rodinsky, Chervony Liman, Pokrovska, Novopavlivka, Molodetsky. In some locations, the fights have not subsided yet.
According to preliminary data, today 155 Russian occupants were disarmed in this direction, of which 109 - irrevocably. Ukrainian soldiers also destroyed two artillery systems, five cars, six motorcycles, 4 communication antennas and 20 BPLAs; four artillery systems, one motorcycle and six Russian BPLA control points were damaged.
In the Novopavlovsk direction, the Russian enemy tried 19 times to break through the defense of Ukrainian defenders in the areas of the settlements Tolstoy, Green Gai, Voskresenko, Oleksandrograd, Maliivka and Temirivka. Seven clashes are ongoing.
The Russian opponent did not carry out offensive actions in Gulyaipil and Orikhiv directions.
In the Pridniprovsk direction, Russian forces made four futile attempts to approach Ukrainian positions.
In the rest of the directions, there were no special changes.
