A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation continue the special military operation.

Units of the Sever Group of Forces inflicted fire damage on formations of one mechanised brigade and one jaeger brigade of the AFU close to Novaya Sech, Sadki, Spasskoye, and Varachino (Sumy region).

In Kharkov direction, Russian troops hit units one mechanised brigade and one motorised infantry brigade of the AFU and one border detachment of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine near Volchansk, Okhrimovka, and Kazachya Lopan (Kharkov region).

The AFU losses were up to 200 troops, one tank, one armoured fighting vehicle, three motor vehicles, and one field artillery gun. One electronic warfare station and seven materiel depots were neutralised.

The Zapad Group of Forces improved the situation along the forward edge. Russian troops launched attacks on manpower and hardware of two mechanised brigades, one assault brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, one territorial defence brigade, and one National Guard brigade close to Kupyansk, Novoosinovo, Shiykovka (Kharkov region), Novoselovka, Drobyshevo, Kirovsk, and Yampol (Donetsk People's Republic).

The enemy losses were more than 230 troops, three U.S.-made HMMWV armoured vehicles, 14 motor vehicles, and one artillery gun. Four electronic warfare stations and six ammunition depots were neutralised.

Units of the Yug Group of Forces improved the tactical situation. Russian troops hit formations of two mechanised brigades, one airmobile brigade, one assault brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and one territorial defence brigade near Seversk, Dronovka, Pereyezdnoye, Konstantinovka, Pleshcheyevka, Verolyubovka, Ivanopolye, and Aleksandro-Kalinovo (Donetsk People's Republic).

The enemy losses were up to 235 troops, two Western-made armoured fighting vehicles, and seven motor vehicles. Eight ammunition and materiel depots were neutralised.

The Tsentr Group of Forces' units took more advantageous lines and positions. Russian troops delivered strikes at manpower and hardware of three mechanised brigades, two air assault brigades, one airmobile brigade, one assault regiment of the AFU, one marine brigade, and one National Guard brigade close to Krasnoarmeysk, Toretskoye, Rodinskoye, Dimitrov, Kutuzovka, Krasny Liman, and Kotlino (Donetsk People's Republic).

The AFU losses were more than 515 troops, one tank, two U.S.-made Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, one Kazak armoured vehicle, three field artillery guns, and one motor vehicle.

The Vostok Group of Forces' units continued to advance into the depths of enemy defences. Russian troops hit formations of one mechanised brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and one territorial defence brigade close to Vishnevoye (Dnepropetrovsk region), Novogrigorovka, and Poltavka (Zaporozhye region).

The AFU losses were up to 295 troops, two armoured fighting vehicles, and five motor vehicles.

The Dnepr Group of Forces' units inflicted fire damage on manpower and hardware of one mechanised brigade and one mountain assault brigade near Stepovoye, Malaya Tokmachka (Zaporozhye region), and Lvovo (Kherson region).

The AFU losses were up to 35 Ukrainian troops, one electronic warfare station, and one ammunition depot.

Operational-Tactical Aviation, attack unmanned aerial vehicles, Missile Troops and Artillery of the Russian Groups of Forces inflicted fire damage on a transport infrastructure facility, which supported the work of Ukrainian military industry enterprises, assembly and storage areas of long-range unmanned aerial vehicles, ammunition depots as well as temporary deployment points of the AFU and foreign mercenaries in 138 areas.

Air defence systems shot down one U.S.-made HIMARS MLRS projectile and 142 fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles.

In total, since the beginning of the special military operation, the enemy has lost 667 aircraft, 283 helicopters, 87,644 unmanned aerial vehicles, 631 anti-aircraft missile systems, 25,327 tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles, 1,592 MLRS combat vehicles, 30,115 field artillery guns and mortars, and 43,055 special military vehicles.
