A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that Russian forces increased the pace of their territorial gains throughout May and June 2025.

Russian Ground Forces highly likely seized approximately 550-600 sq km of Ukrainian territory in June 2025, an average of approximately 18-20 sq km per day. This was a slight increase from Russian advances in May 2025, which was itself a notable increase on the approximately 200 sq km of Ukrainian territory seized in April 2025.

Russian gains in May and June 2025 are largely in rural, less built-up areas. Russia has focused on identifying weak areas across the defensive line. Small assaults enable Russia to probe and spot opportunistic areas to breakthrough and make further gains across the front line.

While Russia is gaining territory, Russia has faced continuing difficulties attempting to take fortified cities such as Pokrovsk and Kupiansk. Directly assaulting these areas would require significantly greater mass. Russian forces attempt instead to circumvent and cut off logistic routes and ground lines of communication around key cities of interest.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that in total, since the beginning of this day, there have been 131 combat encounters. Ukrainian defenders are decisively intercepting the attempts of the Russian enemy to advance deep into Ukrainian territory, giving him a fiery impression.

Today, Russian troops launched one missile and 62 airstrikes, using two missiles and dropping 90 controlled airstrikes. In addition, 1249 kamikaze drones were deployed and carried out 4,280 shelling positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements.

In the Northern Slobozhansky and Kursky directions, Ukrainian soldiers repelled 11 assault actions of the Russian occupiers since the beginning of the day, three clashes continue so far.
In the South Slobozhansky direction, the Russian enemy nine times stormed the positions of Ukrainian units in the areas of the settlements Vovchansk, Zelene and Staritsa, two clashes are still ongoing. The enemy launched air strikes in the areas of settlements Okip, Borshova, Vovchansk, Chugunivka.
In the direction of Kupyansk, Russian forces carried out offensive actions in the areas of the settlements of Kupyansk, Zeleniy Gorge, Nova Kruglyakivka and in the direction of Pishany. Ukrainian defenders have already stopped three Russian attacks, another battle is ongoing.
In the Lyman direction, Russian invaders 18 times attacked the positions of Defense Forces near the settlements of Novoyegorivka, Grekivka, Karpivka, Green Valley, Kolodyazi, Serebryanka and towards Shandrigolovy, seven clashes are ongoing.
Three enemy assaults repelled Ukrainian defenders in the Siversky direction - the Russian occupiers tried to advance in the area of Grigorivka and in the direction of Viymka.
In the Kramatorsky direction, Russian forces attacked Ukrainian positions 11 times in the areas of the settlements of Chasiv Yar, Stupochka, Bila Gora and Predtečina.
In the Toretsky direction, seven times the Russians attacked the positions of Ukrainian units in the areas of Scherbinivka, Oleksandr-Kalinovy, Petrivka, Rusyn Yar and in the direction of Pleschievka, all clashes in the direction have already been completed.
In the Pokrovsky direction since the beginning of the day, Russian forces 48 times tried to advance on the position of Ukrainian units. Russian forces attacked in the areas of settlements Poltavka, Popiv Yar, Rodinske, Novotoretske, Mirolubivka, Novoekonomíčne, Lisivka, Novoukrainka, Zvirove, Udaachne, Muravka, Oleksiyivka and in the direction of Pokrovsk and Novopavlivka. Three clashes are still ongoing.
According to preliminary data, today in this direction there were 231 Russian occupiers, of which 130 - irrevocably. Also Ukrainian soldiers destroyed a tank, three combat armored vehicles, three cars, three motorcycles, two cannons, 18 armored vehicles, one satellite communication terminal and five armored antennas; damaged a tank, five cannons and two motorcycles of the Russian occupiers.
In the Novopavliv direction, Russian forces tried 12 times to break through the defense of Ukrainian defenders in the areas of the settlements of Piddubne, Zirka, Temirivka, Mirne, Voskresenka, Free Field, Shevchenko. The two clashes are still going on.
