Russo-Ukraine War - 05 July 2025 - Day 1228

A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that the Russian Ministry of Defence has confirmed that Major General Mikhail Gudkov was killed on 02 July 2025 in the Kursk oblast in western Russia. Gudkov, appointed as a Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy on 28 March 2025, was killed in a Ukrainian strike on a Russian command post.

It is likely Gudkov was directing marine infantry units attempting to establish a buffer zone in the Ukrainian oblast of Sumy. Russia's advances in Sumy have slowed due to Ukrainian counterattacks and significant Russian losses.

Gudkov was the former commander of the Russian Pacific Fleet's 155th Marine Infantry brigade. Gudkov is reportedly the second senior Russian general to be killed in 2025, the fifth general killed in the last 12 months, and the sixteenth Russian general killed since Russia launched its illegal, full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The loss of so many high-ranking officers is likely to have had the effect of undermining command and control in parts of the Russian Armed Forces. This has likely contributed to Russian tactical and operational difficulties during the conflict.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that in total, 170 combat clashes have taken place since the beginning of this day. Ukrainian defenders are decisively intercepting the attempts of the Russian enemy to advance deep into Ukrainian territory, giving him a fiery impression.

Today, Russian troops launched one rocket and 51 aviation strikes, using two missiles and dropping 92 controlled aviation bombs. In addition, they engaged 1376 kamikaze drones and carried out 4805 shelling positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements.

Ukrainian soldiers repelled 21 Russian assault actions in the North Slobozhansky and Kursky directions since the beginning of the day. In addition, the Russian enemy launched seven air strikes, dropping 18 controlled bombs, and carrying out 256 shelling positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements, including six from reactive salvage systems.
In the South Slobozhansky direction, Russian forces three times stormed the positions of Ukrainian units in the areas of Vovchansk and in the direction of Barn. Aviation strikes suffered vovčans Аkí farms, ohrímívka, zibine, prikolotne and home.
In the direction of Kupyansky, Russian forces carried out offensive actions in the areas of settlements Golubivka, Kindrashivka, Kolodyazi, Zagrizove, Zeleny Gorge and in the direction of the Kupyansk. Ukrainian defenders stopped eight enemy attacks.
In the Lyman direction, Russian invaders 33 times attacked the positions of Defense Forces near the settlements of Novoyegorivka, Grekivka, Karpivka, Green Valley, New Peace, Ridkodub, Mirne, Torske, Grigorivka.
Four Russian assaults were repelled by Ukrainian defenders in the Siversky direction - the Russian occupiers tried to advance in the areas of Verkhnyokamiansky, Grigorivka and Ivano-Daryivka, another assault is ongoing.
In the Kramatorsky direction, Ukrainian soldiers repelled five Russian attacks in the areas of Bila Gora, Chasovoy Yar and Stupochok.
In the Toretsk direction, the Russians six times went into offensive on the positions of Ukrainian units in the areas of populated points of Toretsk, Diliyivka, Rusyn Yar and in the direction of the White Mountain. Defense forces stopped all enemy attacks.
In the Pokrovsky direction since the beginning of the day, the Russian occupiers 51 times tried to advance on the position of Ukrainian units. Russian forces attacked in the areas of settlements Poltavka, Malinivka, Novoekonomíčne, Peace-loving, Beam, Lisivka, Shevchenko, Razine, Gorihove, Dachne, Zvirove, Udaachne, Novosergiyivka, Muravka, Novopavlivka, Oleksiyivka and in the directions of Volodymyrivka, Sergiyevka, Filiya and Pokrovsk. The opponent caused air strikes on Pokrovsk and Sukhomu Yar.
According to preliminary data, today in this direction there were 135 Russian invaders, of which 85 - irrevocably. Also Ukrainian soldiers destroyed one combat armored car, three cars, five motorcycles, seven BPLA, also damaged one car, two motorcycles and one BPLA antenna of the Russian enemy.
In the Novopavlovsk direction, Russian forces tried 15 times to break through the defense of Ukrainian defenders in the areas of the settlements of Zyrka, Tolstoy, Voskresenko, Zaporizhia Shevchenko, Novopil. The two clashes are still going on.
In the direction of Gulyajpils .komu, Russian forces went to attack eight times on the position of Ukrainian defenders in the area of Malinivka. Four clashes are still ongoing. Bilogirâ the opponent attacked unkekorovnimi aviation missiles.
In the Orihiv direction, the Russian aggressor attacked the positions of Ukrainian defenders five times in the area of Kamiansky.
Ukrainian soldiers repelled one attack of the Russian invaders in the Pridniprovsk direction. Olgivka settlement suffered an airstrike.

Within the framework of the reduction of the capabilities of the enemy to manufacture high-precision weapons, on the night of July 5, the units of the Forces of Ukraine unmanned systems of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in interaction with other components of the Defense Forces, made an impression on the important object of the military-industrial complex of the Russian aggressor - AT "VNYIR-Progress" (Cheboksary, Chuvas Republic of Russia).
The goal was the powers from the production of adaptivnih antenna grids "Comet". They are used in Shahed-type aircrafts, Iskander-K missiles, unified planning and correction modules (UMPC) for controlled airbombs (CAB), and other high-precision weapons with which the enemy regularly fires on Ukraine, including civilian infrastructure.
It has been confirmed that the means of impact have reached the target area.
The results are getting real.
Defense forces continue to take all measures to undermine the military-economic potential of Russian occupiers and force Russia to end its armed aggression against Ukraine.

In addition, a military-industrial complex facility of the enemy producing "Kometa" adaptive antenna arrays has been successfully hit.

On the night of July 5th, units of the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in cooperation with other components of the Defense Forces, struck an important facility of the russian aggressor's military-industrial complex, JSC "VNIIR-Progress" (Cheboksary, Chuvash Republic of the russian federation). The target hit was the facilities for the production of "Kometa" adaptive antenna arrays. The operation itself was a part of measures reducing the enemy's capabilities to manufacture high-precision weapons.

"Kometa" adaptive antenna arrays are used in Shahed-type UAVs, Iskander-K missiles, unified guidance and correction modules (UMPK) for guided aerial bombs, and other high-precision weapons with which the enemy regularly attacks Ukraine, in particular civilian infrastructure.

It has been confirmed that the means of destruction have reached the target area. The results are being clarified.
