- PROGRAM PLAN AND REPORT ON PROPOSED OBLIGATIONS FOR THE ARCTIC MILITARY ENVIRONMENTAL COOPERATION PROGRAM FY 1999
The Russian military began using the port of Feodosia as another base for the Russian Black Sea Fleet. OSINT researchers published images of Russian warships in the bays of Feodosia and Novorossiysk, confirming the GUR statement that the Russian Black Sea Fleet is withdrawing ships from Sevastopol. At the end of June 2023, it became clear that the Russians had set up a new naval base in Feodosia. On 29 June 2023, MT Anderson published a satellite image showing at least one Project 1171 landing ship, two minesweepers, and several barges with reflectors in the waters of the port of Feodosia.
Considering that Feodosia is located relatively close to the Kerch Strait and the Kerch (Crimean) Bridge, one can conclude that this harbor is already acquiring strategic importance for the Russian military. Therefore, the defense of this port has been organized as an important military facility: boom barriers have been installed at the entrance to the harbor, minesweepers in the water area clearly perform the function of “water area protection ships,” and landing ships presumably deliver cargo to Feodosia that is necessary for the logistics of the Russian army in Crimea. At the same time, barges with corner reflectors most likely play the role of “false targets” in case of a possible attack by anti-ship missiles with a radar homing head.
On 02 October 2023, an OSINT researcher working under the name MT Anderson posted high-resolution satellite photos of the seaport in Feodosia in Russian-annexed Crimea to the social network X (formerly Twitter). The expert identified Russian ships that are in the port or have temporarily left it. MT Anderson wrote that "the Karakurt -class corvette has left for now." This is about the new small missile ship "Cyclone" , which is the only one in the Russian Black Sea Fleet of this class. Last Friday, Russian and Georgian media reported that "Cyclone" entered the port of Sukhumi in unrecognized Abkhazia to participate in events dedicated to the so-called "Victory and Independence Day of Abkhazia."
Formed on April 1, 1953 with the boundaries of the operational zone from the meridian of 35 ° to the village of Blagoveshchenskaya with the temporary deployment of the command and support bodies of the base in the city of Kerch as part of the CF Naval Base Directorate , the 108th OVR brigade in Kerch , the 72nd separate division of minesweepers under construction in Kamysh - Burun , the 91st separate division of torpedo boats under construction in Feodosia , the 335th OVR division in Rostov - on - Don , the 117th brigade of experimental ships in Feodosia , the 743rd separate coastal artillery battery at Cape Panagia , the 11th air defense base region in Kerch , the Kerch - Azov region of the hydrographic service in Kerch , rear services , garrison , support units and subdivisions , training grounds No. 4 , 222 , 232. During its history, the base has been repeatedly reformed and its functional affiliation has expanded . From 1978 to the 1980s , it housed the 141st brigade of OVR ships , the 53rd brigade of construction and repair ships , a testing center and the only deep-sea testing ground for anti-submarine and anti-mine weapons in the USSR fleet . At various periods in the base's history , a division and a brigade of submarines from the Black Sea Fleet were based there. In 1995 , the Kerch - Feodosia naval base was disbanded.
By October 2023 the Russian Federation has withdrawn some of the Black Sea Fleet's warships from Sevastopol , some of which are now in the port of Feodosia. Krym.Realii asked a military expert why the Russian military took such a step.
As Krym.Realii reported earlier ,
OSINT researcher MT Anderson posted satellite photographs of the seaport in Feodosia on October 2 on the social network X. According to the researcher, Russian minesweepers, a small missile ship of Project 21631, a large landing ship of Project 775, a patrol ship of Project 205P and a patrol ship of Project 22160 were in Feodosia.
