Vidyayevo

Vidyayevo naval base consists of the Ara Bay and Ura Bay facilities. The area has served as a base for diesel-powered submarines since the beginning of the 1960s. In 1979, it also became a base for nuclear-powered submarines. At Ara Bay, about a dozen nuclear-powered submarines are waiting for de-fueling and dismantlement. This facility also has small storage capacity for solid and liquid radioactive waste.

The town of Vidyayevo is a Closed Administrational and Territorial District (ZATO - zakrytye administrativno-territorial'nye obrazovaniia). The town of Vidyaevo, with 20,000 inhabitants, lies on the eastern side of the Ura Bay, six kilometer north of the village of Ura Bay. Small and middle business is quite developed in Vidyaevo. In the sphere of everyday service enterprises with private form of property and private entrepreneurs have leading positions. State and municipal institutions and enterprises provide with services in the sphere of medicine, housing, culture, education and sport. Some fishery farms are registered on the territory of the town of Vidyaevo. Among them can be named "Vidyaevets", "Atlant", and the branch of "Belriba" farm. The main activity of these farms are catching and processing of fish and sea products.

Edict President of the Russian Federation #269 of 06 March 2001 set forth the conversion of Vidyaevo settlement of Murmansk region into a closed administrative-territorial formation and the assertion of the boundaries of the ZATO. The regime of the closed administrative-territorial formation - settlement Vidyaevo provided for the acting special regime of the safe functioning of military parts and point of the basing of the ships of northern fleet, which foresees limitations to the entrance and constant stay of citizens, to the flights of the flight vehicles above its territory and other limitations in accordance with to the legislations of the Russian Federation. Under this edict the government of the Russian Federation together with the administration of Murmansk region to carried out within the 6- monthly period the necessary organizational- lawful measures, connected with the conversion Of vidyaevo settlement into the closed dministrative-territorial formation and with the establishment of its boundaries.
