A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that President Putin is scheduled to address both houses of the Russian parliament on Friday 30 September. There is a realistic possibility that Putin will use his address to formally announce the accession of the occupied regions of Ukraine to the Russian Federation. The referendums currently underway within these territories are scheduled to conclude on 27 September. Russia’s leaders almost certainly hope that any accession announcement will be seen as a vindication of the ‘special military operation’ and will consolidate patriotic support for the conflict. This aspiration will likely be undermined by the increasing domestic awareness of Russia’s recent battlefield sets-backs and significant unease about the partial mobilisation announced last week.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russia continues to focus its efforts on holding the captured territories, attempts to fully occupy the Donetsk oblast, as well as disrupting the active actions of the Ukrainian Defense Forces in certain directions. It fires at the positions of Ukrainian troops along the contact line, conducts aerial reconnaissance, and in some areas tries to restore lost positions. Russian forces continue to destroy civilian infrastructure and peaceful residential buildings. There remains the threat of air and missile strikes on the entire territory of Ukraine.

During the day, Russian forces carried out 2 missile and 6 air strikes, carried out more than 20 MLRS attacks on military and civilian objects, violating the norms of International Humanitarian Law, laws and customs of warfare.

More than 15 settlements were damaged by enemy fire. In particular, Zaporizhzhya, Mykolayiv, Ochakiv, Avdiyivka, Krasnohorivka, Poltavka and Maryinka. The situation in the Volyn and Polissya directions has not changed significantly.

In other directions, the enemy fired from tanks, mortars and barrel artillery:

More than 20 settlements were shelled in the Zaporizhya direction. Among them are Novosilka, Stepnohirsk, Shevchenko, Novopil, Vremivka, Poltavka and Uspenivka.

More than 35 settlements along the contact line were hit by fire from tanks, mortars, and barrel artillery in the South Buh direction. In order to conduct reconnaissance, adjust fire and strike at civilian infrastructure objects, Russian forces made more than 50 UAV flies, in particular, the Iranian-made "Shahed-136".

To replenish personnel losses, the military-political leadership of the Russian Federation is trying to organize the forced mobilization of Ukrainian citizens in the temporarily occupied territories.

During the current day, units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine repelled enemy attacks in the areas of the settlements of Soledar, Mayorsk, Kurdyumivka, Zaitseve, Bakhmut, Bakhmutske, Vyimka, Spirne, Pervomatiske and Kamianka.

To support the actions of the land groupings, the Air Force of the Ukrainian Defense Forces carried out 10 strikes. It was confirmed that 7 areas of concentration of manpower and military equipment of the enemy and 3 positions of anti-aircraft missile systems were damaged.

The shelling of the capital of the DPR continues from early morning. The Ministry of Coal of the Republic reported that due to the shelling of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the mine named after A.F. Zasyadko in the Kievsky district of Donetsk was de-energized, 21 people were blocked underground.

VGTRK military reporter Yevgeny Poddubny said on his Telegram channel that allied forces are advancing towards the village of Pervomaiskoye to the west of Donetsk. The day before, the enemy tried to counterattack, but the Donetsk intelligence service recorded the movement of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and transmitted the target designation to the Russian artillery. As a result, the Ukrainian army rolled back, leaving its BMP on the battlefield.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the DPR announced the detention of 24-year-old Irina Navalnaya, who tried to commit a terrorist attack at a referendum. The saboteur, on the instructions of the Kyiv special services, planned to plant an explosive device near the building of the local administration. The perpetrator confessed.
