A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that Russia has highly likely lost at least four combat jets in Ukraine within the last 10 days, taking its attrition to approximately 55 since the start of the invasion.

There is a realistic possibility that this uptick in losses is partially a result of the Russian Air Force accepting greater risk as it attempts to provide close air support to Russian ground forces under pressure from Ukrainian advances. Russian pilots’ situational awareness is often poor; there is a realistic possibility that some aircraft have strayed over enemy territory and into denser air defence zones as the front lines have moved rapidly.

Russia’s continued lack of air superiority remains one of the most important factors underpinning the fragility of its operational design in Ukraine.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russia continues to focus its efforts on the organization of defense and holding the captured territories, attempts to fully occupy the Donetsk oblast, as well as disruption of the active actions of the Ukrainian Defense Forces in certain areas. It fires at the positions of Ukrainian troops along the contact line, takes measures to regroup his units in certain areas, introduces reserves and does not stop aerial reconnaissance.

There remains the threat of air and missile strikes throughout the territory of Ukraine. During the day, Russian forces launched 4 missile and 9 air strikes, carried out more than 11 MLRS attacks on military and civilian objects on the territory of Ukraine, violating the norms of International Humanitarian Law, laws and customs of warfare.

The infrastructure of more than 24 settlements was damaged. Russian forces continue to take drastic measures to keep the situation under its control. The command of the 58th Combined Arms Army of the russian occupation troops held a meeting with the commanders of units and units operating in the Zaporizhzhya direction. According to the available information, at the specified event, attention was emphasized to maintaining the occupied positions and preventing the breakthrough of the Defense Forces deep into the occupied territory.

At the training field near the city of Torez, Russian forces set up a training camp for the training of personnel who arrived from prisons to supplement the units of the 1st Army Corps that suffered losses during the hostilities.

In the temporarily occupied territory of the Luhansk oblast, collaborators and local residents of the Bilokurakinskyi and Troyitskyi districts loyal to the Russian occupiers, who actively cooperated with the occupation authorities, are moving to the territory of the Russian Federation. They are trying to take with them documents confirming their illegal activities as members of self-proclaimed authorities.

During the current day, the units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled enemy attacks in the areas of Mykolayivka Druha, Kurdyumivka and Zaitseve settlements. During the day, the aviation of the Ukrainian Defense Forces hit 11 areas of concentration of enemy manpower and military equipment, one position of an anti-aircraft missile system and one ammunition depot. In addition, a briefing was held today by the Chief of the Radiation, Chemical and Biological Defense Forces of the RF Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov. According to him, Kyiv tried to curtail the US bioprogram in 2013, but succumbed to pressure from Washington.

He recalled that from September 5 to 9, a meeting of the States Parties to the Convention on the Prohibition of Biological and Toxin Weapons was held in Geneva in connection with the violation by the United States and Ukraine of Articles I and IV of the document. During the meeting, Washington and Kyiv did not answer the question about the reasons for the urgent destruction of documents on military biological activities in the "square", although the United States acknowledged the fact that samples of pathogenic strains and biomaterials of citizens were exported from the Eastern European state. At the same time, the American delegation in Geneva recognized the conduct of biological research in Ukraine on low-income citizens and patients in psychiatric hospitals, Kirillov added.

The Supreme Court of the LPR sentenced two former employees of the OSCE mission Maxim Petrov and Dmitry Shabanov to 13 years in prison for treason.
