A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that Ukrainian forces continue to consolidate their control of newly liberated areas of Kharkiv Oblast. Russian forces have largely withdrawn from the area west of the Oskil River.

The way in which Russian forces have withdrawn in the last week has varied. Some units retreated in relatively good order and under control, while others fled in apparent panic.

High-value equipment abandoned by retreating Russian forces included capabilities essential to enable Russia’s artillery-centric style of warfare. Amongst these are at least one ZOOPARK counter-battery radar and at least one IV14 artillery command and control vehicle. Such abandonment highlights the disorganised retreat of some Russian units and likely localised breakdowns in command and control.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russia continues to focus its efforts on attempts to fully occupy the Donetsk oblast, hold the captured territories and disrupt the active actions of Ukrainian troops in certain areas. Russian forces are shelling Ukrainian positions along the contact line, trying to take measures to regroup troops in separate directions, conducts aerial reconnaissance. There remains the threat of air and missile strikes throughout the territory of Ukraine.

Russia does not stop attacks on peaceful residential areas and objects of civil infrastructure, violating the norms of International Humanitarian Law, laws and rules of war. The infrastructure of more than 20 settlements was damaged by air strikes, missile strikes, and MLRS. These are, in particular, Kryvyi Rih, Nikopol, Bilohirka, Maryinka, Olhivske, Oskil, Mykolayiv, Ochakiv, Lyubomirivka, Hulyaipole and Myrne.

During the current day, Russian forces carried out 5 missile strikes, 5 air strikes and carried out 23 on military and civilian objects on the territory of Ukraine.

The situation in the Volyn and Polissya directions has not changed significantly.
In other directions, the enemy fired at the infrastructure from tanks, mortars and artillery of various calibers:
in the Siversky direction - in the areas of Halahanivka settlements of Chernihiv oblast and Kindrativka of Sumy oblast;
in the Kharkiv direction – Vovchansk, Hoptivka, Baranivka, Vysoka Yaruga, Neskuchne and Sotnytskyi Kozachok;
in the Slovyansk direction - Kupyansk;
in the Kramatorsk direction - Tetyanivka, Bilohorivka, Siversk, Mykolayivka, Kramatorsk, Ivano-Daryivka and Verkhnyokamianske;
in the Bakhmut direction – Sukha Balka, Mykolayivka Druha, Zaitseve, Odradivka, Soledar, Yakovlivka, Bakhmutske, Bakhmut and Vesela Dolyna.

Russian forces did not conduct active operations in the Avdiyivka, Novopavlivsky, and Zaporizhzhya directions. Fired along the entire contact line.
In the South Buh direction, Russian forces inflicted fire damage along the entire line of contact. In addition, it conducted aerial reconnaissance of the UAV - made 48 flies.
Significant losses of the Russian forces in the Slobozhansk direction have been confirmed. Thus, the 202nd and 204th rifle regiments of the 2nd army corps of the occupying forces, which participated in hostilities, were quickly withdrawn to the temporarily occupied territory of the Luhansk oblast and are subject to disbandment. The remaining personnel are distributed among the units of the mobilization reserve. Due to the large number of wounded in the settlement of Novoayidar, civilian medical facilities, including a children's hospital, are urgently being repurposed as military hospitals.

In general, the military-political leaders of the Russian Federation decided to replenish the reserve for the war in Ukraine at the expense of penal institutions, state enterprises and institutions, lifting restrictions on conscription for large families and the forced creation of regional battalions formed on a national basis.

Defense forces of Ukraine successfully repelled enemy attacks in the areas of Vesela Dolyna, Mayorsk and Zayitseve settlements.

In the current day, in order to support the actions of land groupings, the aviation of the Ukrainian Defense Forces carried out 18 strikes on the places where the enemy's manpower and equipment are concentrated. It has been confirmed that 10 areas of concentration of the occupiers' manpower, 3 strongholds and 5 positions of anti-aircraft missile systems have been hit. Russian losses are being clarified.

Air defense units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed two UAVs of the occupiers in different directions. Units of the Missile Forces and Artillery inflicted damage on 3 command and control points, 12 areas of concentration of manpower and combat equipment of Russia, 2 ammunition warehouses, anti-aircraft defense equipment and enemy logistics nodes fell into the affected area.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, during a daily briefing, announced the elimination of up to 30 servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and 10 units of military equipment as a result of high-precision strikes in the area of ​​Odnorobovka and Kharkov.

According to the statement of the department, as a result of massive fire strikes by the RF Armed Forces, the losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine amounted to up to 500 servicemen killed and wounded in the areas of the settlements of Krasnoe Znamya and Novogrigorovka (Nikolaev region), Sukhoi Stavok and Belogorka (Kherson region). In addition, in the village of Spornoe in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), as a result of unsuccessful actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, more than 80 Ukrainian servicemen, eight armored vehicles and five pickup trucks were destroyed.

The RF Armed Forces hit seven command posts of the Ukrainian army in the areas of the settlements of Dobropolye, Bakhmut (DPR), Kamyshevakha (Zaporozhye region), Olgino (Kherson region), Kalinovka, Murakhivka, Novorossiyskoye (Nikolaev region).

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation announced the destruction of five depots of rocket and artillery weapons and ammunition in the Kharkiv region and the DPR. Air defense systems shot down 12 Ukrainian drones in a day. Two ballistic missiles "Tochka-U" were destroyed in the air in the areas of Perevalsk (LPR) and the city of Donetsk, as well as 30 shells of MLRS HIMARS and "Alder" in the areas of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station, the city of Kherson and the village of Trudovoye, Zaporozhye region.

The people's militia of the DPR in the evening report reported that since the beginning of the day, Ukrainian formations have fired more than 210 ammunition from tanks, cannon artillery with a caliber of 155, 152, and 120-mm mortars across the territory of the republic.

Shelling was carried out in areas of 10 settlements. As a result of the attacks, two civilians were killed and three were injured. Eight housing constructions and three civil infrastructure facilities were damaged.

Kyiv militants do not stop their attempts to capture the city of Liman. The commander of the Donbass battalion "Vostok" Alexander Khodakovsky informed that the allied forces continue to control the settlement. According to the head of the city administration Alexander Petrikin, the shelling of the Armed Forces of Ukraine began this morning, two people were injured.

The Telegram channel "Military Chronicle" reported on an unsuccessful attempt to break through the assault group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine near the village of Peski. Ukrainian troops suffered losses.

In Ukraine, a criminal case was opened under the article “treason” against the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the DPR and two ex-deputies of the Verkhovna Rada, the Kyiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported. The specific names of the suspects are not indicated, however, it is known that the DPR Foreign Ministry is headed by Natalia Nikonorova.

In the morning, the Armed Forces of Ukraine shelled Stakhanov and Lisichansk using HIMARS MLRS, firing 10 missiles. The representative office of the LPR in the Joint Center for Control and Coordination (JCCC) of issues related to war crimes of Ukraine reported damage to the building and dormitory of the Stakhanovskaya branch of the medical college, the dormitory and boiler room of the Stakhanovskaya Pedagogical College of the Leningrad State Pedagogical University, two apartment buildings, the Vozrozhdeniye utility company and the gas pipeline .

Andrey Marochko, an officer of the People's Militia of the Republic, said that attempts by the Ukrainian military to enter the territory of the LPR were successfully repelled, they were thrown back to their previously occupied positions.

The head of the LPR, Leonid Pasechnik, called joining the Russian Federation the main task of the republic, and in what status it doesn’t matter.

A TASS correspondent informed that the first head of the LPR, Valery Bolotov, was posthumously awarded the star of the Hero of the Republic. Battalion commander of the NM LPR Denis Kudrin and former chairman of the Council of Ministers of the LPR Gennady Tsypkalov, who were the organizers of the first referendum in the republic, were also presented for awards posthumously.
