A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that Ukraine's offensive operations in the Kherson region continued over the weekend. On 05 September 2022, the Odesa Journal reported 27 sorties by Russian uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) on the west bank of the Dnipro, compared to an average of 50 a day throughout August. On 21 August 2022, Ukrainian forces reported shooting down three Russian Orlan-10 tactical UAVs in a single day.

In recent years, Russian doctrine has given an increasingly prominent role for UAVs, particularly to spot targets for its artillery to strike. UAVs can be vulnerable to both kinetic effects – where they are directly shot down – and to electronic jamming.

In the face of combat losses, it is likely that Russia is struggling to maintain stocks of UAVs, exacerbated by component shortages resulting from international sanctions. The limited availability of reconnaissance UAVs is likely degrading commanders' tactical situational awareness and increasingly hampering Russian operations.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russia continues to focus its efforts on establishing full control over the territory of Donetsk oblast, maintaining the captured districts of Kherson, part of Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhya and Mykolaiv oblasts. Russian forces conduct UAVs aerial reconnaissance with high intensity. They are trying to improve the logistical support of its troops.

During the current day, Russian forces launched more than six missile and more than ten air strikes on military and civilian objects on the territory of Ukraine. To do this, enemy spent more than thirty flights. In particular, infrastructure was damaged in the areas of Bayrak, Asiyivka, Pryshyb, Tetyanivka, Vremivka, Novomykhailivka, Velyka Novosilka, Poltavka, Olhivske, Novopil, Velike Artakove, Bila Krynytsia, Ternivka, Bilohirka, Kostromka, Novohryhorivka, and Blahodativka. A further threat of air and missile strikes remains on the entire territory of Ukraine.

The situation in the Volyn and Polissy directions has not changed significantly. In other directions, the enemy fired at military and civilian infrastructure from tanks, combat vehicles, barrel and jet artillery, namely:

    in the Siversky direction, Russian forces shelled the civilian and military infrastructure of the settlements of Khrinivka in Chernihiv oblast and Nova Huta, Sopych and Myropillia in Sumy oblast;
    in the Kharkiv direction, Russian forces fired at objects in the areas of the settlements of Prudyanka, Slatyne, Ruska Lozova, Ruski Tyshky, Mospanove, Husarivka, and Zalyman;
    Russian forces did not conduct active offensive actions in the Slovyansk direction. Dolyna, Krasnopillya, Mazanivka, Dmytrivka, Brazhkivka and Dovhenke were shelled by the occupiers;
    in the Kramatorsk direction, fire damage was recorded near Bogorodychne, Sydorove, Kryvya Luka, Zakitne, Platonivka, Siversk, Ivano-Daryivka, Verkhnyokamyanske and Hryhorivka;
    in the Bakhmut direction, the areas of the settlements of New York, Yuryivka, Zaytseve, Vesela Dolyna, Mayorsk, Bakhmutske, Soledar, Bakhmut, Opytne and Rozdolivka were damaged by fire;
    in the Avdiivka direction, the settlements of Avdiivka, Opytne and Pervomaiske were hit by mortars and barrel artillery;
    in the Novopavlivskyi direction, the districts of Maryinka, Novomykhailivka, Velika Novosilka, Paraskoviivka, Vuhledar, Zolota Nyva, Neskuchne and Vremivka were shelled;
    in the Zaporizhzhya direction, the enemy fired artillery of various types near Novodanylivka, Bilohirya, Hulyaipilske, Dorozhnyanka, Chervony, Poltavka, and Zaliznychny;
    in the South Buh direction, the enemy fired along the contact line. In addition, Russian forces continued to actively conduct aerial reconnaissance by UAVs, making more than fifty sorties.

At the same time, in connection with significant losses, the number of Russian units assigned to restore combat capability has increased. In addition, units of private military campaigns are forced to be replenished at the expense of prisoners in the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. These persons are offered amnesty, citizenship of the Russian Federation and payments for their participation in the war against Ukraine.
Units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces hold their positions and prevent the enemy from advancing deep into the territory of Ukraine. The Ukrainian military successfully repelled enemy attacks in the areas of Dolyna, Soledar, Novobakhmutivka, Kodema, Zaitseve, Avdiivka, Maryinka, and Lyubomirivka settlements.

During the day, to support the actions of the land groupings, the Air Force of the Ukrainian Defense Forces carried out more than eight strikes, during which combat equipment, anti-aircraft defense equipment and a significant number of personnel were destroyed in strongholds in the Donetsk and South Buh directions. Ukrainian air defense units in different directions destroyed one helicopter, an unmanned aerial vehicle and five cruise missiles.

Missile troops and artillery of land troops continue to carry out the tasks of fire damage to manpower and combat equipment, counter-battery combat, disruption of the Russian forces' command system and logistical support. Six Russian command points, including the corps level, were damaged by fire. Three objects of concentration of manpower of the occupiers were destroyed. Nine anti-aircraft defenses fell into the affected area. The results are being verified. At the same time, electronic reconnaissance and combat equipment, communication stations, pontoon and ferry crossings, eight ammunition depots of various levels were destroyed, which significantly reduced the enemy's ability to conduct offensive operations.

The Russian Ministry of Defense during the briefing reported that the Armed Forces of Ukraine continue to attempt to attack in the Nikolaev-Kryvyi Rih direction, but suffer heavy losses in this sector of the front. So, during the day in the areas of Visunsk, Yavkino, Bereznegovatoy and Chervonopolye (Nikolaev region), the dislocation points of the 61st Infantry, 35th Marines and the 17th Tank Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were hit. 3 weapons and ammunition depots were destroyed in the Veliky Artakovo area.

In total, Ukrainian troops lost 12 tanks, 11 infantry fighting vehicles and 8 other armored vehicles, 6 pickup trucks with heavy machine guns and more than 210 military personnel in the Nikolaev-Krivoy Rog direction in a day.
