A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that, on 21 and 22 September 2022, Russia struck the Pechenihy dam on the Siverskyy Donets River using short range ballistic missiles or similar weapons. This follows a strike on the Karachunivske Dam near Krivyy Rih in central Ukraine on 15 September 2022.

Ukrainian forces are advancing further downstream along both rivers. As Russian commanders become increasingly concerned about their operational set-backs, they are probably attempting to strike the sluice gates of dams, in order to flood Ukrainian military crossing points.

The attacks are unlikely to have caused significant disruption to Ukrainian operations due to the distance between the damaged dams and the combat zones.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russia continues to focus its efforts on attempts to fully occupy the Donetsk oblast and hold the captured territories, as well as disrupt the active actions of the Ukrainian Defense Forces in certain areas. It fires at the positions of Ukrainian troops along the contact line, conducts aerial reconnaissance and tries to restore lost positions in certain directions. Russian forces continues to cynically attack civilian infrastructure and civilian homes. There remains the threat of Russian forces launching air and missile strikes on the entire territory of Ukraine.

Russian forces launched 5 missile and 12 air strikes, launched more than 9 MLRS attacks on military and civilian objects on the territory of our country, violating the norms of International Humanitarian Law, laws and customs of warfare. More than 20 settlements were damaged by enemy fire. In particular, Bakhmut, Mykolayivka, Kalynivka, Mykolayiv, Sukhy Stavok, Pivdenne, Mali Shcherbaky.

The situation in the Volyn and Polissya directions has not changed significantly. In other directions, the enemy inflicted fire damage from tanks, mortars and barrel artillery, namely:

    in the Siversky direction - in the areas of the settlements of Huta-Studenetska and Mykhailove of Chernihiv oblast and Pavlivka, Stukalivka, Seredyna-Buda, Myropilske, Krasnopillya, Mezenivka and Slavhorod of Sumy oblast;
    in the Slobozhansk direction - in the areas of the settlements of Hoptivka, Strilecha, Ivashky, Oleksandrivka, Podoly, Kupyansk and Horokhuvatka;
    in the Kramatorsk direction – Pryshyb, Yarova, Ozerne, Dibrova, Raihorodok and Siversk;
    in the Bakhmut direction - Soledar, Bakhmut, Bakhmutske, Vesela Dolyna, Odradivka, Zaitseve, Yakovlivka, New York, Verkhnyokamianske, Bilohorivka and Rozdolivka;
    in the Avdiyivka direction - Avdiyivka, Berdychi, Pervomaiske, Karlivka, Vodyane, Maryinka and Novomykhailivka.
    More than 25 settlements were shelled in the Novopavlivsk and Zaporizhzhya directions. Among them are Vuhledar, Novoukrainka, Novosilka, Novopil, Bilohirya, Orihiv, Temyrivka and Vremivka.
    More than 40 settlements along the contact line were affected by fire in the South Buh direction. In order to carry out reconnaissance, adjust fire and launch strikes on civilian infrastructure objects, Russian forces made more than 60 flies of UAVs.

Partial mobilization measures are ongoing on the territory of the Russian Federation. In connection with the low motivation and readiness of Russian citizens to participate in hostilities on the territory of Ukraine, representatives of the military commissariats began door-to-door rounds with immediate delivery of summonses to men of conscription age in populated areas of the Krasnodar Territory from the first hours of the announced mobilization. Police checkpoints are set up on the main roads to control the movement of the male population. Mobilized personnel, after a short training in training centers, are planned to be sent to replenish military units that suffered numerous losses during the war on the territory of Ukraine.

During the current day, units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled the attacks of the occupiers in the areas of Petropavlivka, Vyimka, Bakhmutske, Zaitseve, Opytne, Odradivka, Nevelske and Novomykhailivka.

To support the actions of the land groupings, the Air Force of the Ukrainian Defense Forces carried out 19 strikes. It was confirmed that 14 areas of concentration of manpower and military equipment of the enemy and 5 positions of anti-aircraft missile systems were hit. In addition, Ukrainian air defense units destroyed 4 aircraft (Su-25, two Su-30 and one Su-34), 5 UAVs and a cruise missile of the invaders.

Missile troops and artillery, in particular, hit 4 command and control points, more than 10 areas of concentration of Russian manpower and equipment, 3 air defense positions and 4 ammunition depots. Russian losses are being refined.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reports the defeat of the positions of the 14th, 92nd, 66th, 28th, 59th, 61st brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in the Nikolaev, Kherson regions and the DPR. As a result, more than 340 people, 38 units of military equipment were destroyed. At the same time, up to 300 militants were destroyed by a strike at the place of deployment of foreign mercenaries in Kalinovka.

Artillery and aviation, meanwhile, hit five command posts of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, three ammunition depots, 62 artillery positions and 153 areas where enemy forces were concentrated.

Air defense systems shot down seven drones, 42 HIMARS and Vilkha missiles, three anti-radar missiles and two Tochka-Us. A MiG-29 of the Ukrainian Air Force, modified to use American HARM ammunition, was eliminated over Sergeevka.
