A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that Ukraine continues offensive operations in the north-east of the country while Russian forces have established a defensive line between the Oskil River and the town of Svatove. Russia likely sees maintaining control of this zone as important because it is transited by one of the few main resupply routes Russia still controls from the Belgorod region of Russia.

In addition, this line sits along the border of Luhansk Oblast, part of the Donbas, which Russia aims to ‘liberate’ as one of its immediate war aims. Any substantial loss of territory in Luhansk will unambiguously undermine Russia’s strategy.

Russia will likely attempt to conduct a stubborn defence of this area, but it is unclear whether Russia’s front line forces have sufficient reserves or adequate morale to withstand another concerted Ukrainian assault.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russia continues to focus its efforts on the organization of defence and holding the captured territories, attempts to fully occupy the Donetsk oblast, as well as disruption of the active actions of the Defence Forces in certain areas. It shells our positions along the contact line, carries out measures to regroup troops in certain directions, launches reserves and conducts aerial reconnaissance.

Russian forces are shelling the homes of civilians and civilian infrastructure objects, violating the norms of International Humanitarian Law, the laws and customs of war. During the current day, Russian forces carried out 4 missile and 15 air strikes, more than 20 MLRS attacks on military and civilian objects on the territory of Ukraine.

The infrastructure of more than 30 settlements was affected, including Kharkiv, Siversk, Druzhkivka, Kostyantynivka, New York, Maryinka, Krasnohorivka, Poltavka, Kryvyi Rih, Zaporizhzhya, Nikopol, Orihiv, Myrolyubivka, and Ochakiv. There remains the threat of air and missile strikes throughout the territory of Ukraine.

The situation in the Volyn and Polissya directions has not changed significantly. In other directions, the enemy fired from tanks, mortars and artillery, namely:
in the Siversky direction - in the areas of the settlements of Bleshnya of Chernihiv oblast and Khliborob and Kindrativka of Sumy oblast;
in the Kharkiv direction, in particular from the territory of the russian rederation, the enemy fired in the areas of the settlements of Kharkiv, Kudiivka, Hoptivka, Anyskyne, Dvorichna, Kupyansk, Senkove, Horokhovatka, Bakhtin and Kamyanka;
in the Kramatorsk direction - Yaremivka, Sosnove, Yarova, Svyatohirsk, Shchurove, Staryi Karavan, Ozerne, Serebryanka, Raihorodok, Piskunivka, Kryva Luka, Mykolaivka, Siversk, Verkhnyokamianske, Spirne, Vesele and Hryhorivka;
in the Bakhmut direction – Vyimka, Rozdolivka, Bilohorivka, Yakovlivka, Soledar, Bakhmutske, Bakhmut, Vesela Dolyna, Zaitseve, Odradivka, Mykolaivka Druha, Mayorsk, New York, Sukha Balka and Yuryivka.
in the Avdiyivka direction – Vesele, Avdiyivka, Netaylove and Opytne.
In the Novopavlivskyi, Zaporizhzhya and Yuzhnobuzskyi directions, the enemy fired at the contact line. More than 50 settlements were affected by fire, including Zelene Pole, Poltavka, Novopil, Olhivske, Zaliznychne, Charivne, Stepova Dolyna, Tavriyske, Ternovi Pody and Bila Krynytsia.

In connection with the successful actions of the Ukrainian Defense Forces to disable all crossings across the Dnipro in the Kherson direction, Russian forces are preparing retreat routes. So, in the area of the Kakhovskaya HPP, for the construction of a further crossing, they flooded 9 wagons. At the same time, the Russian occupation authorities continue to force local entrepreneurs to make calculations in Russian rubles. They conduct weekly inspections and threatens to "nationalize", that is, take away, the business in case of refusal to cooperate with the occupiers.

During the current day, units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled Russian attacks in the areas of the settlements of Bakhmut, Zaitseve, Pervomaiske, Mykolayivka Druga and Novomykhailivka.

The elimination of more than 180 Russian troops in Kherson has been confirmed. On September 10, an attack was made on the building of Alcoresurs LLC, where the personnel and military equipment of the enemy were located. Roshvardia and FSB units spent five days clearing the rubble and removing the bodies of the dead, trying to hide the losses.

During the day, the aviation of the Ukrainian Defence Forces struck ten areas of concentration of Russian manpower and equipment and three positions of anti-aircraft missile systems. Enemy losses are being clarified. In addition, Ukrainian air defence units shot down one enemy UAV. Missile troops and artillery inflicted fire damage on the enemy's control point and ammunition warehouse.

The report of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation dated September 17 states that the Armed Forces of Ukraine (APU) tried to go on the offensive in the Pravdino region of the Kherson region. As a result, the enemy lost more than 120 people killed, as well as 7 tanks and 13 infantry fighting vehicles, after which he withdrew to his original positions.

During attacks on the positions of the 46th, 24th, 81st brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as the national battalion "Kraken" (banned in the Russian Federation) in the Nikolaev, Kherson and Kharkov regions, more than 190 military personnel, 5 tanks and more than 24 units of military equipment were destroyed.

Artillery and aviation also hit 5 enemy command posts, 4 ammunition depots, 53 artillery positions, and 117 enemy concentration areas. At the same time, 8 drones and 25 rockets from HIMARS and Alder installations were shot down.

Separately, it is reported that Kyiv resumed provocations in the area of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. The Armed Forces of Ukraine fired at the Volna holiday village and a thermal power substation near a nuclear facility. The radiation situation remains normal.

LDNR

The Donetsk People's Republic reported shelling of six settlements from Ukraine during the day. As a result of the use of more than a hundred shells, eight civilians were killed and 13 more were injured. 13 housing constructions and 7 civil infrastructure facilities were damaged.

The vast majority of the injured and dead belong to Donetsk: the Ukrainian army attacked the central districts of the city using American M777 howitzers.

During the day, the people’s militia suppressed the enemy’s firing positions in the Avdiivka and Ugledar directions, and also repulsed the local offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Sands.
