A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that Russian forces continue to suffer from morale and discipline issues in Ukraine. In addition to combat fatigue and high casualties, one of the main grievances from deployed Russian soldiers probably continues to be problems with their pay.

In the Russian military, troops' income consists of a modest core salary, augmented by a complex variety of bonuses and allowances. In Ukraine, there has highly likely been significant problems with sizeable combat bonuses not being paid. This is probably due to inefficient military bureaucracy, the unusual legal status of the 'special military operation', and at least some outright corruption amongst commanders.

The Russian military has consistently failed to provide basic entitlements to troops deployed in Ukraine, including appropriate uniform, arms and rations, as well as pay. This has almost certainly contributed to the continued fragile morale of much of the force.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russian forces continue to focus its efforts on establishing full control over the territory of Donetsk oblast, maintaining the captured districts of Kherson, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhya and Mykolaiv oblasts. It is trying to improve the logistical support of its troops. Russian forces conduct aerial reconnaissance with high intensity using UAVs. Searches for weak points in our defense, tries to improve the tactical position. There is still a threat of massive air and missile strikes on military and critical infrastructure facilities throughout Ukraine.

During the current day, Russian forces carried out 14 missile and more than 15 air strikes on military and civilian objects on the territory of Ukraine. In particular, the civilian infrastructure in the areas of the settlements of Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, Voznesensk, Ochakiv, Sukhy Stavok was affected.
Carriers of Kalibr cruise missiles are in readiness for the use of missile weapons in the waters of the Black Sea. Russia's aviation group is conducting combat operations in order to support the actions of ground groups, the most intensively - in the South Buh and Donetsk directions.

At the same time, the issue of replenishing its manpower losses remains problematic for Russia. So, in the correctional colony No. 124 of the city of Donetsk, representatives of the private military campaign "Wagner" are trying to recruit convicts into their unit.

Also, in the area of the settlement of Kherson, servicemen of the 127th regiment of the 1st army corps rioted and wrote a letter refusing to participate in hostilities. It is known that one of the reasons is unsatisfactory all-round support: in the advanced positions, the personnel of this regiment was left even without water. Some of the servicemen were taken away by Russian counterintelligence representatives, their further fate is unknown.

In the Volyn and Polissya directions, the situation remains without significant changes. The threat of missile and air strikes from the airspace and territory of the Republic of Belarus remains.

In other directions, Russian forces attacked military and civilian infrastructure using tanks, combat vehicles, mortars, barrel and jet artillery, namely in the Siversky direction - 12 settlements of Chernihiv and Sumy oblasts, also used the anti-aircraft missile system. The increase in the intensity of shelling along the state border is explained by the recent rotation of the Russian forces' artillery units in the indicated direction. In addition, Russia's use of sabotage and reconnaissance groups in the border areas of Ukraine is not excluded.

In the Kharkiv direction, the areas of Odnorobivka, Sosnivka, Udy, Ruski Tyshky, Petrivka, Ruska Lozova, Velyki Prohody, Stariy Saltiv, Petrivka, Nortsivka, Husarivka, Chepil, Pokrovske were shelled. They carried out airstrikes in the areas of Peremoha and Husarivka settlements.

In addition, Russian forces used unmanned aerial vehicles in the areas of Pytomnyk, Ruska Lozova, Slatyne, Ivanivka, Balakliya, Savyntsi and Ruski Tyshky settlements.

In the Slovyansk direction, the settlements of Bohorodychne, Dolyna, Krasnopillya, Nova Dmytrivka, Dmytrivka, Mazanivka, Sulihivka, Karnaukhivka were shelled by the occupiers. There was an air strike on Bohorodychne.

In the Kramatorsk direction shelled the areas of the settlements of Sloviansk, Siversk, Raihorodok, Donetske, Hryhorivka, Ivano-Daryivka, Zvanivka, Spirne, Vesele, Pereizne. They carried out airstrikes in the areas of the settlements of Bohorodychne and Verkhnokamianske.

In the direction of Bakhmut, shelling was carried out in the areas of Zaytseve, Bakhmutske, Soledar, Bakhmut, Yakovlivka, Bilohorivka, Vyimka and Rozdolivka. In the Avdiivka direction shelling was carried out in the areas of Novokalynove, Berdychiv, Vodiane, Pervomaiske, Krasnohorivka, Avdiivka, Orlivka. In the direction of Novopavlivka shelling was carried out in the areas of Maryinka, Paraskoviivka, Mykilske, Vuhledar, Solodke, Shevchenko, Velyka Novosilka, Bohoyavlenka, Pavlivka, Novodonetske, Novomayorske, Neskuchne, Vremivka, and also carried out an air strike in the area of Novomykhailivka. In the Zaporizhzhya oblast, the enemy shelled the areas of Zarichne, Shcherbaki, Novodanilivka, Bilohirya, Gulyaipilske, Gulyaipole, Dorozhnianka, Chervone, Poltavka, Olhivske, Novopil, Novosilka, Burlatske, Vremivka. Russian forces also carried out airstrikes in the areas of Bilohirya, Poltavka and Vremivka.

In the South Buh direction, Russian forces continue to conduct defensive operations, shelling almost all settlements along the contact line. In addition, they carried out airstrikes in the areas of the settlements of Lyubomyrivka, Bezimenne, Kostromka, Bilohirka, Velyke Artakove. To adjust the artillery fire, the UAV was actively used.

The Defense Forces of Ukraine hold their positions and do not allow Russian units to advance on the territory of Ukraine. Ukrainian units managed to successfully repulse enemy attacks in the areas of Krasnopillya, Bakhmutske, Bakhmut, Mayorsk, Zaitseve, Kodema, Soledar and Pervomaiske settlements.

Missile troops and artillery of land grouping of our troops continue to perform tasks of counter-battery combat, disruption of the Russian forces' command and control system and logistical support. During the current day, damage was inflicted on command points, areas of concentration of military equipment and personnel.

The Air Force Group repels concentrated missile and air strikes and enemy air attacks, provides anti-aircraft cover for important facilities and troop groups.
During the day, in order to support the actions of the land groups, the Air Force of the Ukrainian Defense Forces carried out 12 strikes aimed at destroying the manpower, combat and special equipment, as well as military facilities of the enemy.
It became obvious why the Russian invaders so stubbornly tried to start the school year in the temporarily captured territories. For example, about 70 occupiers live on the first floor of the school building in the village of Orlyanske, Zaporizhzhya oblast, while children, including first-graders, study on the second floor, and Russian military equipment is located in the school yard. The educational process began on September 1, and the situation is similar in most schools and kindergartens in the region. Russian forces cynically uses Ukrainian children for cover.

At the same time, despite the efforts of the Russian occupiers and their henchmen, a significant part of educational institutions did not start working in a face-to-face format. Propaganda events organized by collaborators on the occasion of the Day of Knowledge with the participation of russian officials also did not work.

Meanwhile, NATO is strengthening its presence in the eastern part of the Alliance, deploying 8 multinational battle groups on the territory of participating countries: Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. All these groups are combat units. In this way, NATO demonstrates the strength of transatlantic ties and decisive readiness.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that Russian troops have only recently occupied the area, and its settlements are already under attack from Ukrainian nationalists. As a result of one of the attacks in Snigirevka , a four-year-old girl was killed and another child was wounded. Barbashov recalled that the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) undertook a massive shelling on September 1, but then the victims were avoided.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that, at the request of the IAEA Secretariat, Russia provided over 60 journalists from various countries, including France, the USA, China, Denmark, Japan, Germany, Turkey, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea and Vietnam, to the Zaporozhye NPP. Representatives of the foreign press unwittingly witnessed a failed attempt by the Armed Forces of Ukraine to seize the station, after which the nationalists opened fire on the facility, forcing civilians to take refuge in a bomb shelter.

At the same time, as Vladimir Rogov, a member of the main council of the administration of the Zaporozhye region, told RIA Novosti, Kiev, under the guise of reporters, tried to introduce its spies and saboteurs into the facility, but their penetration was prevented in advance.

Meanwhile, Russian troops continue to deliver pinpoint strikes against enemy infrastructure and positions, as well as fighting in several operational areas at once.

The situation in the LDNR

The shelling of the cities of Donbass by Ukrainian militants continues. During the day, Donetsk, Gorlovka, Zaitsevo and a number of other settlements of the DPR were repeatedly targeted for attacks. As a result, at least four civilians were injured.

In turn, the Russian troops hit the positions and objects of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Slavyansk, Donetsk and Bakhmut directions. In addition, during the day, fighting continued for Kodema, Soledar and Bakhmut (former Artemovsk).

The military department of the DPR also reported on the humiliation of one tank, two trucks and more than 20 militants, reporting the loss of two of their own fighters and wounding five more.

Also, the authorities of the republic urged the population to be careful in connection with the "Petal" mines remaining on the streets, remotely installed by neo-Nazis in peaceful cities. Currently, a set of works to eliminate this threat continues.

Another batch of humanitarian aid for civilians and fighters of the People's Militia arrived in Donetsk. It is reported that the cargo was collected and delivered by volunteer organizations and charitable foundations of the Moscow region. The composition includes food, personal hygiene products, stationery sets for schoolchildren, medicines, as well as mattresses and mattresses for the defenders of the republic.
