A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that heavy fighting continues in southern Ukraine, including shelling in Enerhodar district, near the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

Despite the war in Ukraine, on 01 September, the Russian military started exercise Vostok 22, its annual Joint Strategic Exercise, marking the culmination of the military training year.

Russia publicly claimed that 50,000 troops will take part, however, it's unlikely that more than 15,000 personnel will be actively involved this year. This is around 20% of the forces which participated in the last Vostok exercise in 2018. Russia's military performance in Ukraine has highlighted that Russia's military strategic exercises, such as Vostok, have failed to sustain the military's ability to conduct large scale, complex operations.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the Russian enemy is trying to establish complete control over the territory of the Donetsk oblast and to hold the captured areas of the Kherson, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia and Mykolaivoblasts. Russian forces continue to carry out air and missile attacks on military and civilian objects on the territory of Ukraine. In particular, at night and in the morning, 5 rockets were fired at the city of Kharkiv, two of them from the S-300 anti-aircraft missile complex. Also, 23 rockets from the Grad and Uragan MLRS were fired at Ivanivka, two of which were cluster munitions. 9 airstrikes were carried out on Maryinka, Soledar, Peremoha, and Zaitseve settlements.

In the Volyn and Polissya directions, the situation remains without significant changes. Certain units of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus are performing the task of strengthening the protection of the section of the Belarusian-Ukrainian border in the Brest and Gomel regions. Control inspections of units are ongoing, as well as preparations for regular military exercises. In the city of Brest, the deployment of UAVs units of the armed forces of the Russian Federation, which are involved in the reconnaissance of the border regions of Ukraine, was discovered.

In the Siversky direction, Russian forces are holding separate units of the armed forces of the russian federation in the border areas of the Bryansk and Kursk regions. The enemy shelled the areas of Senkivka, Khrinivka, Kamianska Sloboda in Chernihiv oblast and Novovasylivka, Maiske, Sukhodil, Nova Sloboda in Sumy oblast.

In the Slobozhansky direction, the situation has not undergone significant changes. Units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces hold their positions and do not give the enemy the opportunity to advance deep into the territory of Ukraine.
In the Kharkiv direction, Russian forces shelled the areas of the settlements of Udy, Sosnivka, Velyki Prokhody, Pytomnyk, Ruski Tyshky, Cherkaski Tyshky, Petrivka, Peremoha, Stariy Saltiv and Pryshyb. Russian forces carried out remote demining of the terrain in the area of ​​Lebyazhe settlement. Ukrainian Defense Forces successfully repelled enemy attack in the area of ​​the Husarivka settlement.

In the Slovyansk direction, Russian units fired from tanks, mortars, barrel artillery, and multiple rocket launchers at the areas of Virnopilla, Brazhivka, Dibrivne, Dolyna, Bohorodichne, Donetske, Raihorodok, and Krasnopilla settlements. Russian forces did not conduct active offensive actions.
In the Kramatorsk direction, Russian forces shelled the areas of Verkhnokamianske, Ivano-Daryivka, Pereizne, Vesele, Rozdolivka, Hryhorivka, and Siversk settlements.
In the Bakhmut direction, Russian forces fired mortars, tanks, barrel and jet artillery in the areas of the settlements of Bilohorivka, Yakovlivka, Soledar, Bakhmutske, Kodema, Mayorsk, New York, Sukha Balka, Yuryivka.
Ukrainian Defense Forces successfully repelled enemy attacks in the direction of the settlements of Soledar, Bakhmutske, and Vesela Dolyna.

With offensive actions, units of the so-called "kadyrivtsi" are trying to advance in the direction of the settlements of Zaitseve and Mayorsk, hostilities continue.
In the Avdiivka direction, the settlements of Tonenke, Avdiivka, Karlivka, Pervomaiske, Vodyane, Opytne, Vesele, Krasnohorivka, Heorgiivka, Maryinka came under fire.
With offensive and assault actions, Russian forces tried to improve the tactical position in the directions of the settlements of Pervomaiske, Opytne, and Nevelske. Thanks to the coordinated actions of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, the enemy was pushed back to previously occupied positions.

Russian forces did not conduct active offensive actions in the Novopavlivsk direction. Shelling of the areas of the settlements of Velyka Novosilka, Neskuchne, Bohoyavlenka, Prechystivka, Novomayorsk, Mykilske was recorded.

In the Zaporizhzhia direction, Russian forces shelled objects in the areas of Novoocheretuvate, Novosilka, Vremivka, Novopil, Novodarivka, Zaliznychne, Dorozhnyanka, Novodanylivka, Bilohirya settlements.
In the Southern Buh direction, Russian forces shelled the areas of Shyroke, Partyzanske, Novopetrivka, Trudolyubivka, Lyubomirivka, Shevchenkove, Luch, Stepova Dolyna, Prybuzke, Lymany, Tavriyske, Lyubimivka.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine successfully repelled Russian forces' attack near Visokopilla and Potyomkine.
Russia's naval group in the waters of the Black and Azov Seas continues to perform tasks of reconnaissance and blocking civilian shipping. There is still a threat of missile strikes on objects and infrastructure elements deep in the territory of Ukraine.

A Russian company, which was based in the "Lost World" sports club, left Kherson and took the looted property to the temporarily occupied territory of the Republic of Crimea in 5 awning trucks.

In connection with the arrival of the IAEA commission, Russian forces removed all military equipment from the territory of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. About 100 units were moved to the Atom Energomash plant, the rest were distributed in the nearest settlements.

The Russian Ministry of Defense, during a daily briefing, reported on the ongoing attempts by Ukrainian troops to advance in the Nikolaev-Kryvyi Rih direction. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are suffering heavy losses here: over the previous day, they lost 13 tanks, 19 infantry fighting vehicles, 12 other armored fighting vehicles, 11 pickup trucks with heavy machine guns and more than 330 military personnel. In addition, two militants were taken prisoner.

In the area of ​​​​Andreevka (Kherson region), 2 Su-25 attack aircraft and one MiG-29 fighter of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, converted to use American HARM anti-location missiles, were shot down.

In addition, high-precision weapons of the Russian Aerospace Forces hit the temporary deployment point of the 17th tank brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Bereznegovatoy area, hangars with weapons and equipment of the 46th airmobile brigade in the area of ​​Belaya Krinitsa (Nikolaev region). More than 40 nationalists and up to 10 units of military equipment were liquidated. To the east of Mikhailovka (Donetsk People's Republic, DPR), the command staff of the 56th motorized infantry brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was destroyed. A high-precision airborne strike on a command post killed 18 servicemen, including 12 officers, and wounded another 31 servicemen.

It is noted that due to heavy losses, the personnel of the units of the 110th mechanized brigade, who occupied positions in the areas of Avdiivka and Opytny (DPR), refused to perform combat missions and left their positions.

Concentrated fire strikes on the combat positions of the 60th Infantry Brigade in the area of ​​Dobryanka and Novovorontsovka (Kherson region) killed more than 30 and wounded up to 15 nationalists.

Aviation, rocket troops and artillery hit a platoon of multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) "Alder" in the area of ​​​​Novomaryevka (Nikolaev region), 8 command posts of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the areas of Dachnoye (Kharkiv region), Aleksandrovka, Bakhmut and Konstantinovka (DPR), Verkhnyaya Tersa ( Zaporozhye region), Belaya Krinitsa, Veliky Artakovo and Bashtanka (Mykolaiv region), 42 artillery units, manpower and military equipment in 134 districts. 6 depots of rocket and artillery weapons were destroyed in the areas of Kharkov, Tsirkunov and Andreevka (Kharkiv region), Seversk, Soledar (DPR) and Good (Nikolaev region). In the area of ​​Voskresenka (DPR), the launcher of the Buk-M1 anti-aircraft missile system was destroyed.

During the day, 12 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were shot down by means of air defense (air defense) in the districts of the Kharkiv region, Blagodatnoye, Zaporozhye, Kherson regions and the DPR. A US-made HARM anti-radar missile was shot down near Nova Kakhovka (Kherson region). In addition, 14 HIMARS MLRS shells were intercepted in the areas of Styla (DPR), Kherson, Berislav and Novaya Kakhovka (Kherson region).

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu during a conference call said that the influx of foreign mercenaries to Ukraine has decreased by more than 3.5 times against the backdrop of large losses in Kiev. Since February 24, 2,831 militants have been killed.

The head of the Defense Ministry also announced the hacking of the echeloned defense of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Donbass and taking control of a large defense center of Ukrainian troops in Pisky.

The people's militia of the DPR in the evening report stated that since the beginning of the day, Ukrainian troops have fired more than 200 ammunition from the BM-21 Grad MLRS, tanks, cannon artillery with a caliber of 155, 152 and 122 mm, as well as 120 mm mortars across the territory of the republic.

Areas of 7 settlements were under fire. As a result of the attacks, a civilian was killed and 6 more were injured. 18 housing constructions and civil infrastructure were damaged.

The head of the DPR , Denis Pushilin , during the educational marathon of the Knowledge society, said that the task of the allied forces is to liberate all the cities that were founded by Russian people. He called the current events a "historical time", noting that people in the Russian Federation, like the inhabitants of Donbass, do not study history, but write it.

Pushilin also said that the pace of issuing Russian passports to citizens of the republic is growing. According to him, this cannot but please the population of the DPR.

In addition, the head of the republic announced the desire of foreign countries to assist in the restoration of Donbass. According to him, states that have already recognized or are in the process of recognizing the independence of the DPR can take part in this process.
