Operation Northern Arrows - 04 October 2024
Lebanon's acting prime minister Najib Mikati told President Biden's adviser Amos Hochstein 04 October 2024 he wants to move forward with the plan for a diplomatic solution. Hochstein told Mikati that the proposal the U.S. laid out in June for a diplomatic solution in Lebanon "is off the table" because the conditions on the ground have changed in the last two weeks due to the increased fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, the U.S. officials said. UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix said that UN peacekeepers are staying in their positions on Lebanon's southern border despite Israel's request to vacate some areas before it launched its ground operation against Hezbollah.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi arrived in Lebanon on 04 October 2024 on a short official visit during which he met with a number of officials, most notably Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and caretaker Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati , carrying a decisive and firm message that the Islamic Republic stands with Lebanon and Hezbollah . Beyond the message of support, Minister Araqchi reiterated from Beirut, where the sound and echoes of Israeli raids on the southern suburbs could be heard , that “we have no plans to continue the attack on the Zionist entity, but if the entity takes any step, our response will be stronger, and we will respond to it in a proportionate and thoughtful manner." Araghchi explained that Iran fully supports the efforts of the Lebanese to confront the crimes of the "Zionist entity," saying, "I held very good talks with Presidents Mikati and Berri, and we exchanged views on the recent events in Lebanon, and during them we confirmed that Iran stands by Lebanon and will remain by its side."
Araghchi stressed that Iran will remain supportive of the resistance, saying, "We are confident that the crimes of the Zionist entity will fail as they failed before, and that the Lebanese people will emerge victorious," considering that his visit is not ordinary or protocol, but rather comes in difficult circumstances and Beirut is being bombed at every moment, "and this is the best evidence of Iran's standing - as it did in the past - always with Hezbollah."
