A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that in the northern Donetsk region, fighting has continued for control of Chasiv Yar and Toretsk. Russia has been attempting to gain control of the two towns, which serve as the gateway to the Donetsk cities of Kramatorsk and Kostyantynivka, since early 2024. Russian forces attempted assaults in Chasiv Yar and Toretsk with armoured vehicles in late December 2024 and early January 2025. It is likely that these attacks were repelled in Chasiv Yar, but in Toretsk Russia has continued to advance.

Russian forces likely control at least 70 per cent of Toretsk, and have made grinding progress through the town, but urban fighting has inhibited rapid advancement. In Chasiv Yar, the Siverski Donets-Donbas canal serves as the current line of control.

Advancing Russian forces are frequently targeted by Ukrainian UAV operators as they approach the canal. Russian forces have been attempting to interdict Ukrainian logistics routes in and out of these towns.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that in total, since the beginning of this day, there have been 124 combat encounters.

Russian military forces launched 28 aviation strikes, using 36 CAB, two missile strikes, launching two rockets. In addition, the Russians have engaged 985 kamikaze drones and carried out about five thousand shells on the positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements.

In the Kharkiv direction, Ukrainian troops repelled four Russian attacks in the areas of the settlements of Vovchansk and Cossack Lopan. One battle is still going on. A veterinarian opponent attacked NARAMA.
In the Kupyans хkomu direction, the Russian opponent attacked the positions of Ukrainian defenders in the areas of Petropavlivka and Pi Куany. Ukrainian defenders repelled six attacks, two more clashes are currently ongoing.
In the Lyman direction since the beginning of the day, Russian zagarbniki 11 times attacked the positions of Ukrainians near the settlements of Kopanka, Shiykivka, Pershotravneve, Makiyivka, Terni and Zarichne. One battle is still going on.
In the Kramators комуkomu direction, 14 clashes near Chasovoye Yar and Stupok were recorded, all clashes are already over.
In the Toretsky direction Russians 11 times attacked the positions of defense forces. The main efforts of the invasion were concentrated near the settlements of Toretsk, Bila Gora and Scherbinivka. At the moment, one confrontation continues.
Since the beginning of this day, in the Pokrovsk direction, the Russians have tried 50 times to break through Ukrainian defense near the settlements of Elizabeth, Fox, Green, Ray, New Labor, Pokrovsk, Udaachne, Kotline, Novovasilivka, Silver, Petropavlivka, Novoandriyivka, Dachne, Shevchenko and Yantarne. Six clashes are ongoing so far. On Mirnograd and Pokrovsk the Russian enemy dropped Kabi. The Russian enemy suffers significant losses - today in this direction 376 Russian invaders were defecated, 184 of them - irrevocably. Four units of automotive equipment were also destroyed, two Russian cannons were damaged.
In the Novopavlovsk direction, Russian forces nine times attacked Ukrainian positions near the settlements of Konstantinopil, Neskučne, Vremivka and Rivnopil three clashes - continue. In the direction of the Russian enemy actively applied aviation, airstrikes suffered Novopil, Malinivka, Konstantinopil, Mosquito and Velika Novosilka.
In Siversky, Orihivskky, Gulyaipilskky and Pridniprovskky directions since the beginning of the day, the Russian enemy has not carried out any active actions.
In the operational zone in Kurshchiní, units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine repelled 17 attacks of Russian invaders within a day. The opponent made over 400 shells, made 10 aviation strikes, applying 11 cab.
In other directions, the situation has not changed significantly.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that In Kharkov direction, units of the Sever Group of Forces hit formations of an AFU motorised infantry brigade close to Volchansk (Kharkov region).

The AFU losses amounted to up to 30 troops, an artillery gun, and an electronic warfare station.
 
The Zapad Group of Forces  liberated Kalinovo (Kharkov region) as a result of the successful offensive.

Russian units hit manpower and materiel of three mechanised brigades of the AFU and a territorial defence brigade near Zagryzovo, Zapadnoye, Zagoruykovka, Dvurechnaya of the Kharkov region, Ivanovka and Torskoye (Donetsk People's Republic)

The AFU losses amounted to up to 410 troops, three armoured fighting vehicles including a U.S.-made M113 armoured personnel carrier, four motor vehicles, six artillery guns, and two Anklav electronic warfare stations. Two ammunition depots have been wiped out.
 
The Yug Group of Forces liberated Yantarnoye (Donetsk People's Republic) as a result of active offensive.

Russian units engaged formations of three mechanised brigades, a motorised infantry brigade, a mountain assault brigade, an infantry brigade, an air assault brigade, an airmobile brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and a marine brigade close to Minkovka, Mayskoye, Markovo, Verolubovka, Fyodorovka, Ulakly, Dachnoye, Zvanovka, Seversk, and Belogorovka (Donetsk People's Republic).

The AFU losses amounted to up to 250 troops, four Kozak armoured fighting vehicles, and four motor vehicles.
Two ammunition depots have been wiped out.
 
The Tsentr Group of Forces improved the situation along the front line, inflicted losses on manpower and hardware of eight mechanised brigades, an infantry brigade of the AFU, a marine brigade, a territorial defence brigade, a national guard brigade, and a national police brigade near Krasnoarmeysk, Slavyanka, Petrovka, Alekseyevka, Dzerzhinsk, Dimitrov, Novopavlovka, Udachnoye, Ukrainka, Zverevo, and Belitskoye (Donetsk People's Republic).

The AFU losses amounted to more than 450 troops, four armoured fighting vehicles including a U.S.-made M113 armoured personnel carrier, a U.S.-made Bradley infantry fighting vehicle, a Turkish-made Cobra II armoured fighting vehicle as well as three motor vehicles, and seven artillery guns.

The Vostok Group of Forces continued advancing to the depth of the AFU defences. Russian troops hit formations of two mechanised brigades, an air assault brigade of the AFU, a marine brigade, a territorial defence brigade near Bogatyr, Konstantinopol, Razliv, Vremevka, and Velikaya Novoselka.

The AFU losses amounted to more than 190 troops, a tank, seven motor vehicles, four artillery guns including a Polish-made 155-mm Krab self-propelled artillery system.
 
The Dnepr Group of Forces engaged manpower and hardware of the two coastal defence brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and a national guard brigade close to Antonovka, Pridneprovskoye, Ponyatovka (Kherson region) and Novoandreyevka (Zaporozhye region). 

he AFU losses amounted to more than 60 troops, five motor vehicles, a field artillery gun, and a Plastun electronic reconnaissance station. An ammunition depot was wiped out.

Operational-Tactical Aviation, attack unmanned aerial vehicles, and Missile Troops and Artillery of the Russian Groups of Forces engaged the infrastructure of military airfields as well as clusters of enemy manpower and hardware in 139 areas.

Air defence systems shot down 55 fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles.

In total, since the beginning of the special military operation, 652 aircraft, 283 helicopters, 40,132 unmanned aerial vehicles, 590 anti-aircraft missile systems, 20,492 tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles, 1,508 MLRS combat vehicles, 20,465 field artillery guns and mortars, and 30,179 units of support military vehicles have been neutralised. 

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation also reported that the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation continue the operation to neutralise an enemy group, which broke into the territory of Kursk region.

The Sever Group of Forces engaged formations of a tank brigade, two mechanised brigades, two air assault brigades, and two territorial defence brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine near Viktorovka, Kolmakov, Kositsa, Kurilovka, Lebedevka, Malaya Loknya, Nikolayevka, Nikolayevo-Daryino, Novaya Sorochina, Pogrebki, and Sverdlikovo. Five enemy counter-attacks were repelled.

Operational-tacticl and Army aviation, and artillery strikes engaged AFU manpower and hardware close to Viktorovka, Guyevo, Kositsa, Kruglenkoye, Loknya, Martynovka, Makhnovka, Melovy, Nikolsky, Staraya Sorochina, Sudzha, Cherkasskoye Porechnoye as well as Basovka, Belovody, Veselovka, Vodolagi, Zhuravka, Miropolye, and Yunakovka in Sumy region.

During the day, the AFU losses amounted to more than 350 troops, a tank, four infantry fighting vehicles, five armoured personnel carriers, 12 armoured fighting vehicles, four motor vehicles, a U.S.-made Paladin self-propelled artillery system, seven mortars, an electronic warfare station, and an armoured recovery vehicle.

Since the beginning of hostilities in Kursk region, the AFU losses amounted to more than 51,200 troops, 297 tanks, 228 infantry fighting vehicles, 166 armoured personnel carriers, 1,533 armoured fighting vehicles, 1,449 motor vehicles, 354 artillery guns, 44 MLRS launchers, including 13 of HIMARS and six of MLRS made by the USA, 16 anti-aircraft missile launchers, eight transport-loading vehicles, 92 EW stations, 13 counter-battery warfare radars, four air defence radars, 30 units of engineering and other materiel, including 15 counterobstacle vehicles, one UR-77 mine clearing vehicle, eight armoured recovery vehicles, and one command post vehicle.

The operation to neutralise the AFU units is in progress.
