Russo-Ukraine War - 18 October 2024 - Day 968

A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that in total, 195 combat clashes have taken place since the beginning of this day. Ukrainian defenders continue to decisively interrupt the attempts of the Russian enemy to advance into the depths of Ukrainian territory, giving him a fiery impression.

Russian invaders launched two missile strikes on the territory of Ukraine using three missiles, 47 air strikes, dropping 67 controlled aviation bombs. In addition, 674 kamikaze drones were deployed to strike and carried out more than 3,000 shells on the positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements.

In the Kharkiv direction, the Russian opponent once stormed the positions of Ukrainian units in the area of vovchanska.
In the direction of Kupyansky, Russian forces carried out offensive actions near Golubivka, Sinkivka, Novoosinovoye, Stepova Novoselivka, Sand, Kolisnikivka, Cherry and Lozova. Ukrainian defenders stopped all 23 Russian attacks.
In the Lyman direction Russian invaders 14 times stormed the positions of Defense Forces near Grekivka, Druzhelyubivka, Terniv, Makiyivka and Torsky. One battle is still going on.
In the Kramators маkomu direction, Russian forces with the support of aviation stormed Ukrainian positions near the Time Yar and Stupočok. Defense forces stopped both attacks of the attackers.
There were seven boêzítknen мку in the direction of Torec боkomu. The Russians stormed the positions of Ukrainian units near Delíivka and Toretsk. All the Russian aggressor's attacks have been repelled.
On the Pokrovsky direction, from the beginning of this day, Russian forces 34 times attacked in the areas of Romanívka, Selidovogo, Promenâ and Mikhailivka. Ukrainian defenders have repelled 28 assaults, six more fights continue.
Today, according to preliminary data, 220 invaders were defecated, of which 124 - irrevocably. One unit of automotive machinery was also destroyed.
In the Kurakhivka direction, Russian forces made 55 attempts to break through Ukrainian defense near the settlements Zhelanne Second, Novodmitrivka, Girnik, Novoselidivka, Kurakhivka, Georgievka, Antonivka, Dalne, Katerinivka and Konstantinivka. Fifty-one encounters completed, four more to go.
In this direction, according to preliminary data, the Russian losses irreversible and wounded amounted to 123 persons. One armored vehicle and one unit of vehicles were also destroyed, and one tank and two armored vehicles were also damaged.
In the Vremívs кkomu direction, Russian forces attacked Ukrainian units near Novoukrainka and Epiphany ten times.
In the Orihivsky direction, Russian occupation troops once stormed the positions of Defense Forces in the areas of Novodanilivka.
Six times Russian forces futile attacked Ukrainian defenders in the pridniprovsky direction.
In other directions - without much change.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation continue the operation to neutralise an enemy group, which broke into the territory of Kursk region.

The units of the Sever Group of Forces continue offensive actions. The units have inflicted fire damage on 22nd, 47th, and 115th mechanised brigades, 82nd, 95th air assault brigades, the 36th Marine Brigade as well as 103rd and 129th territorial defence brigades of the AFU close to Lyubymovka, Sverdlikovo, Malaya Loknya, Novy Put, and Plyokhovo.

Over the past 24 hours, the units of the Sever Group of Forces have repelled two enemy counter-attacks in the direction of Zelyony Shlyakh and Lyubimovka.

As a result, the AFU losses were up to 20 troops killed and wounded, two armoured fighting vehicles.

Army Aviation and artillery have inflicted losses on manpower and hardware clusters of the 17th Tank Brigade, 41st, 47th, 61st mechanised brigades, 80th and 95th air assault brigades, the 1st National Guard Brigade, 103rd and 129th territorial defence brigades of the AFU close to Bogdanovka, Bondarevka, Guyevo, Daryino, Kubatkin, Kolmakov, Lyubimovka, Novy Put, Plyokhovo, Nizhny Klin, Nikolayevo-Daryino, Novoivanovka, Sverdlikovo, Sudzha, and Tolsty Lug.

Operational-Tactical Aviation and Missile Troops have hit assembly areas in Sumy region and reserves of 21st and 115th mechanised brigades, the 95th Air Assault Brigade as well as the 101st and 129th territorial defence brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine near Basovka, Belovody, Belokopytovo, Vodolagi, Pavlovka, Revyakino, and Studenok.

During the day, the AFU losses were more than 505 troops, 15 units of armour, including two tanks, two infantry fighting vehicles, one armoured personnel carrier, ten armoured fighting vehicles as well as seven guns, including one U.S.-made M198 howitzer, and eight motor vehicles.

In total, the enemy lost more than 24,367 servicemen, 167 tanks, 79 infantry fighting vehicles, 101 armoured personnel carriers, 952 armoured fighting vehicles, 651 motor vehicles, 200 artillery guns, 38 multiple rocket launchers, including nine of HIMARS and six of MLRS made by the USA, nine anti-aircraft missile launchers, five transport and loading vehicles, 48 EW stations, nine counter-battery warfare radars, three air defence radars, 22 pieces of engineering and other equipment, including 13 counterobstacle vehicles, one UR-77 mine clearing vehicle, and three armoured recovery vehicles.

The operation to neutralise the AFU units is in progress.
