On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country.

"The prospect of nuclear conflict, once unthinkable, is now back within the realm of possibility," United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told reporters. Guterres sounded the alarm over Russia raising the alert level for its nuclear forces after invading Ukraine, describing it as a "bone-chilling development."

NATO's entry into the conflict over Ukraine could turn into the beginning of a third world war, says European Council President Charles Michel. "We are doing our best not to aggravate the conflict," he argued. "Russia is a nuclear power, and we are well aware that if this conflict turns into a [conflict] between NATO and Russia, then we will come to a third world war."

The decision on the possible transfer of MIG-29 to Ukraine should be taken by NATO as a whole, the head of the Polish Foreign Ministry believes. Zelenskyy has urged NATO to impose a no-fly zone over his country or see its member states attacked by Russia. “If you don’t close our sky, it is only a matter of time before Russian rockets fall on your territory, on NATO territory,” Zelenskyy said in a video address. The decision to introduce a no-fly zone over Ukraine, as requested by Zelensky, can only be taken by the UN. As the chairman of the Military Committee of the European Union, General Claudio Graziano, said, otherwise "it would be a military act against the Russian Federation."

Recent events in Ukraine, including the strikes by Russian troops on the Yavorovsky training ground, confirm the correctness of Hungary's decision not to send its troops there and not to supply lethal weapons to the Ukrainian army, said Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó.

The Pentagon believes that the strike on facilities in the Lviv region will not make it difficult to help Kiev.

The German government has decided to continue not to provide information on the supply of weapons to Ukraine. In turn, the representative of the German Defense Ministry, Arne Kollatz, stressed that "Russia's main task is to cut off the supply of [weapons] to Ukraine and strengthen its own defense." "We don't want to contribute to this," he added. German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock urged not to publicly discuss what arms supplies to the Ukrainian side will be carried out in the future and through what channels.

European Union member states have agreed on a fourth package of sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine, the office of the French EU presidency wrote on Twitter on Monday. The latest sanctions will be formally in place once they have been published in the EU’s official journal, which will follow soon, the message added. The details of the sanctions were not disclosed, but the French presidency said Russia’s “most-favoured nation” trade status would be revoked. This could open the door to the bloc banning or imposing punitive tariffs on Russian goods and putting Russia on a par with North Korea or Iran. Sanctions were set to include an import ban on Russian steel and iron, an export ban on luxury goods including cars worth more than €50,000, and a ban on investments in oil companies and the energy sector, according to diplomatic sources. The measures would also add Chelsea football club owner Roman Abramovich and 14 others to the EU list of sanctioned Russian billionaires, diplomats had said earlier in the day.

A dissenting employee entered the studio during Russia's most-watched evening news broadcast, holding up a poster saying "No War" and condemning Moscow's military action in Ukraine. The incident was a highly unusual breach of security at the tightly-controlled state broadcaster Channel One. Its flagship 9:00pm news show called Vremya [Time} has run since the Soviet era and is watched by millions around the country, particularly by older Russians. The poster said in Russian: "Stop the war. Don't believe the propaganda. Here they are lying to you." It is signed in English: "Russians against the war". OVD-Info, which monitors detentions at opposition protests, identified the woman as Marina Ovsyannikova, saying she worked at Channel One as an editor and was now at a police station.

Russian troops have refocused their efforts to seize Kyiv, firing artillery on suburbs, a local official said on Ukrainian television.

The RF Armed Forces will take action against the defense industry enterprises, which the nationalists use to restore weapons, in response to the attack on Donetsk, the Russian Defense Ministry said. Operational-tactical, army and unmanned aircraft hit 86 objects of the Ukrainian armed forces, the Russian Defense Ministry reported.

According to a spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry, an ammunition depot was also destroyed. “In addition, a large warehouse of ammunition for multiple launch rocket systems was destroyed on the territory of the Antonov plant near Kyiv, from the sites of which fire was fired at units of the Russian troops,” he added.

Mariupol witnessed heavy street fighting, house to house. Ukrainian forces didn’t allow Russians to gain the momentum and still controls the key points in the city. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation announced the destruction of almost all firing points of neo-Nazis in the suburbs of Mariupol. More than 2,500 residents of the Black Sea port city of Mariupol had been killed since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, presidential adviser Oleksiy Arestovych said. Russian forces have blocked an aid convoy trying to reach the besieged port city of Mariupol, Ukraine said, while a first column of cars was allowed to escape.

Andriy Biletsky, leader of Azov, a group of mostly ultra-nationalist war veterans in Ukraine, said if Chechen leader Ramza Kadyrov is in Kyiv region “it will be possible to shoot him dead.” Kadyrov, the leader of Russia’s Chechnya region and ally of Putin, had claimed that he travelled to Ukraine to meet Chechen troops fighting alongside Russian forces. “This will be an unforgettable welcome for you, Don,” Biletsky said, referring to Kadyrov’s nickname that mimics the title of Italian mafia leaders.

Russia’s defence ministry has said 20 people have been killed and 28 wounded by a Ukrainian missile with a cluster charge in the city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine. Ukraine denied launching the attack. “It is unmistakably a Russian rocket or another munition; there’s not even any point talking about it,” Ukrainian military spokesman Leonid Matyukhin told a televised briefing. Pro-Russian separatists who control part of Ukraine’s Donetsk region said that a child was among those hit in the alleged strike and accused Kyiv of committing a war crime.

Moscow did not ask Beijing for help to conduct a special military operation in Ukraine, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. In response to a journalist’s request to confirm or deny the publication of the Financial Times newspaper , according to which the White House received information that disturbed him that Russia allegedly requested military assistance from China for a special operation in Ukraine, Peskov gave a negative answer.

US national security adviser Jake Sullivan has raised concerns about China’s alignment with Russia in a seven-hour meeting with Chinese diplomat Yang Jiechi. Washington warned Beijing of the isolation and penalties it will face if it helps Moscow in its invasion of Ukraine. One official described the meeting as “intense,” reflecting “the gravity of the moment.”

The situation around Ukraine did not affect the work of the ISS, plans for interaction with Russia remain in force, said Joel Montalbano, head of the American ISS program. "Our work on the ISS has been going on for 20 years and nothing has changed in the last three weeks," he said. "The control center is working successfully and without problems. In Russia, a rush demand for basic food products has begun - people take for the future, scattering literally everything in minutes. Especially sugar. This situation was filmed by the Magnit cameras in Orel. According to city residents, a huge concentration of people at the sugar rack in the supermarket has been observed for more than a week every day. Sugar is delivered to the store regularly, but it is still not enough - buyers empty the shelves in a matter of hours. The same problem occurs with drugs.

UNICEF's James Elder said that 1.4 million of those who have fled Ukraine over the past two weeks are children, or "almost a child a second", leaving the country in highly stressful conditions. The number of refugees who have fled Ukraine since the Russian invasion began on February 24 has topped 2.8 million, the United Nations said.
