A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country.

Joe Biden said "The darkness that drives autocracy is ultimately no match for the flame of liberty that lights the souls of free people everywhere." President Biden made an off-the-cuff, off-script, and apparently unplanned declaration that Vladimir Putin “cannot remain in power.” “He was not discussing Putin’s power in Russia, or regime change,” an official said. And with that, an awfully good speech was transformed into a “gaffe.” Michael McFaul wrote "On Putin, Biden expressed what billions around the world and millions inside Russia also believe. He did not say that the US should remove him from power. There is a difference." Macron criticized Biden for calling Putin “a butcher”. The French president says it’s not constructive. “I would not use that kind of language. If a ceasefire is to be brokered, we must not escalate — neither through words nor actions.”

Garry Kasparov wrote "No free world leader should hesitate to state plainly that the world would be a far better place if Putin were no longer in power in Russia. A good way to make that come about is to say exactly that. Russia will be pariah until Putin is gone."

Kyiv’s head of military intelligence says Russia is attempting to “create North and South Korea in Ukraine.”

The next meeting of the delegations of Russia and Ukraine will be held in Istanbul, the Office of the President of Turkiye said. They noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed on this . "During the talks, Erdogan stressed the need to establish a ceasefire as soon as possible, achieve peace between Russia and Ukraine and improve the humanitarian situation in the region, and also said that Turkey will continue to contribute to this process in every possible way," the office added.

Russia insists on a comprehensive treaty that would fix the neutral status and security guarantees of Ukraine, its demilitarization and denazification, the recognition of Crimea and Donbass , as well as other positions. At the same time, presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky noted, representatives of Kiev are trying to drag out the negotiations, so there is no big move forward. "They believe that time is working for them, and they frankly say that they have many decision-making centers with which certain decisions need to be coordinated," Medinsky said.

About ten thousand Ukrainian security forces are dug in Mariupol. The backbone of the group is the remnants of the 36th Marine Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the militants of the Azov nationalist regiment. The garrison is well armed: tanks, armored fighting vehicles and artillery.

Jerome at Military Land reported thatin Chernihiv Oblast Russian troops entered Slavutych and set up checkpoints at the entrances. The residents gathered on the main square and protested against the occupation. In Sumy Oblast elements of Ukrainian 93rd Mechanized Brigade fully liberated Trostianets. The remaining Russian troops have reportedly withdrawn towards Russian border. Ukrainian Territorial Defense units regained control of Boromlya, west of Trostianets. In Kharkiv Oblast Russian forces shelled Kamyanka (near Izium) by TOS-1 flamethrower system. Ukrainian troops are reportedly still present in the southern part of Izium. The command of Ukrainian Forces said that Russian reconnaissance groups have advanced towards Barvinkove and Slovyansk. In Luhansk Oblast Russian assaults on Rubizhne, Sievierodonetsk and Popasna remained unsuccessful.

In Donetsk Oblast Ukrainian troops repelled an enemy attack on Novobakhmutivka, which indirectly confirms that Russian forces gained full control of Verkhnotoretske. In Kherson Oblast Russian Army shelled Novovorontsovka, the village they lost yesterday. Ukrainian forces reportedly advancing towards Kherson, but "we have to yet see the proof".

Russian air defense systems destroyed 18 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles during the night. This was announced by the official representative of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, Major General Igor Konashenkov. The department said that sea-based long-range precision weapons destroyed a missile depot for the S-300 and Buk anti-aircraft missile systems in the village of Plesetskoye, 30 kilometers southwest of Kyiv. The RF Armed Forces continue offensive operations in the course of a special military operation. During the day, operational-tactical and army aviation hit 67 military facilities of Ukraine, including two command posts, three field depots with weapons and ammunition, 11 strongholds of Ukrainian armed forces, 20 areas of concentration of military equipment.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation spoke about the heroism of the Russian military participating in a special operation in Ukraine.

During the battle with a disguised enemy infantry fighting vehicle, the grenade launcher of the airborne assault company squad, corporal Vitaly Khismatullin , approached the target and fired from a hand-held anti-tank grenade launcher. Thus, he destroyed not only the fighting vehicle of the nationalists, but also the personnel in it.

A group of an engineering assault company under the command of Captain Ivan Bukharov was ambushed by Ukrainian nationalists. Despite the superior forces of the enemy, the group courageously repulsed the attack for an hour until the main forces approached. After that, the attacking enemy was eliminated, and the personnel of Bukharov's group cleared a section of the area, thanks to which the Russian troops advanced in a given direction.

A column of Russian units came under fire from Ukrainian nationalists. During one of the salvos, the bridge along which the Russian troops were supposed to advance was destroyed - the Russian troops were actually squeezed by the enemy. However, the crew under the command of the head of the communications platoon, Vladimir Shapkhaev , provided the units with communications with the higher headquarters. Thanks to his actions, tasks were quickly clarified, a pontoon crossing was erected across the river, and an enemy attack was repelled.

Journalists Tikhon Dzyadko and Mikhail Zygar published an interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on their YouTube channels, Readovka reports. Some did so despite a warning from Roskomnadzor about extreme measures. Zelensky says Ukrainian forces are still in control of part of Mariupol. He’s told them they can retreat if they see a way to do so and survive, but the troops insist on remaining, until they can leave with their dead and wounded.

Zelensky said there will be no retaking of Crimea by force. Ukrainians are sick of war and destruction. This isn’t a hoorah war; it’s a national tragedy. The war will end when Russians accept that this has been a catastrophe for the nation and for relations with their neighbors in Ukraine. LNR and DNR will likely seek annexation by Russia soon. What’s Zelensky think about this? Zelensky says it’s a question of legitimacy and legality. Russia doesn’t have it in these occupied territories. Nobody can guarantee Ukraine’s security while Russian troops still occupy Ukrainian soil. “Who’s going to do it? Johnson? Biden?” says Zelensky incredulously. Zelensky said Ukrainians found ceremonial dress uniforms in the first wave of captured Russian tanks, i.e., the Russians were planning a victory parade in Kyiv in the first 3-4 days of the war.

He said Moscow refused to claim their dead. They’re just kids, said Zelensky. But Russia won’t move on this, apparently afraid of revealing the true number of soldiers dying in Ukraine. They’ve offered “[body] bags” not even fit for dead pets, he said.

On March 27, Russian journalists conducted the first interview with Zelensky during a special operation in Ukraine. Employees of Meduza and Dozhd and Novaya Gazeta took part in the conversation. After that, the RKN warned Media about the need to refuse to publish the video. The Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation stated which will assess the content of the interview.
