On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace. "To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the Donbass republics for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's plans do not include the occupation of Ukrainian territories, the goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. As stated in the Russian Defense Ministry, the Russian military does not strike at cities, but disable only the military infrastructure, so nothing threatens the civilian population.

Russia’s ground, air, and submarine-based nuclear deterrent forces were put on heightened standby alert duty with reinforced personnel on 01 March 2022. President Putin ordered the heightened alert status on 28 February 2022, citing “aggressive statements” from NATO related to the Russian military operation in Ukraine. Russia’s nuclear doctrine allows for such weapons’ use in the event of an enemy nuclear attack, or an act of conventional aggression so serious that it threatens the existence of the Russian state.

During a televised security meeting, Belarusian President and Putin ally Alexander Lukashenko presented what appeared to be an “invasion map”, according to Belarusian journalist Tadeusz Giczan. The map showed Ukraine divided into four sectors with “military facilities destroyed by missiles from Belarus”, Giczan said. Shelest said the map showed their forces even occupying Moldova.

A senior US Defense Department official said nearly 75 percent of the Russian troops that were massed along the border are now in Ukraine. The official said Ukraine's air defense still represented a significant roadblock to Russia's military advance. Some media reports quoted US government sources as saying that Belarus was preparing to send troops across its border into Ukraine to support Russia.

A 65km (40 miles) long Russian military convoy appeared stalled near Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, a senior US defence official said. The enormous Russian military convoy was lumbering towards the capital, Kyiv, raising fears of an imminent uptick in fighting there. A senior US defence official told reporters the convoy appeared to stall due to a number of factors, including the Ukrainian resistance that the Russian troops have faced. “We also believe that a part of the stall could be – and I emphasise the word ‘could’ – could be a result of their own self-determined sort of pause in operations – that they are possibly regrouping, rethinking, reevaluating,” the official said. Satellite images on Tuesday showed a long build-up of armored vehicles and artillery starting 29km (18 miles) north of the city.

Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu announced plans to hold a 'First International Antifascist Congress' in August, with its goal being to "unite efforts of the international community in the fight against the ideology of Nazism, neo-Nazism in any form of its manifestation in the modern world".

The US is not discussing establishing a no-fly zone over Ukraine, a senior Pentagon official told reporters, echoing the White House’s earlier comments. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had asked NATO for a no-fly zone to help him defeat Russia. The US military had previously said that it was not considering a no-fly zone over the country, as such a move would likely be considered an act of war.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who went to Estonia to pose in front of NATO tanks, said that getting “involved actively in conflict with Russia is a huge step which is not being contemplated by any member” of the alliance, adding that a no-fly zone is “simply not on the agenda of any NATO country.”

On 01 March 2022 the Ukrainian Air Force officially announced on their Facebook page that three NATO countries – Poland, Slovakia, and Bulgaria – would deliver more than 70 warplanes for the Ukrainian army. The jets were supposed to be able to operate from Polish airfields.

The Bulgarian Defense Ministry told local media that it has not considered providing combat aircraft to Ukraine. Polish President Andrzej Duda said on Monday Poland and NATO were not part of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and therefore can’t send jets to join the combat. “We are not sending any jets to Ukraine because that would open a military interference in the Ukrainian conflict. We are not joining that conflict. NATO is not a party to that conflict”.

The countries of the Weimar Triangle (France, Poland and Germany) consider diplomacy to be still the appropriate way to move forward in the current security situation. This was announced by the foreign ministers of the three countries in a joint statement following a trilateral meeting in the Polish city of Lodz. "France, Poland and Germany, as countries currently playing a leading role as the EU Presidency, the OSCE Presidency and the G7 Presidency, share a special responsibility for maintaining peace, stability and prosperity on the European continent. We emphasize that diplomacy is still the right way forward in the current security situation," the statement said.

According to the ministers, Russia's actions in Ukraine are "a flagrant violation of the UN Charter", "the most serious threat to Euro-Atlantic security in recent decades." "We demand that the Russian authorities immediately cease hostilities and unconditionally withdraw all forces and military equipment from the entire territory of Ukraine," the statement read.

France, Germany, Poland are ready to support Ukraine in its European choice. "We recognize the European aspirations of Ukraine and its choice of Europe. We are ready to support Ukraine, its government and people at this difficult and vital moment in economic and financial terms, by providing it with military and humanitarian assistance, as well as providing it with political support at all levels and in all international organizations," the statement said.

"We express our support for NATO's open door policy, as well as its political and practical cooperation with Ukraine in the field of defense in order to help Ukraine develop its potential and resilience," the ministers said. The Weimar Triangle expressed "unwavering support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders."

The Russian military will strike in Kyiv on the objects of the SBU and the 72nd main center of information and psychological operations (PSO), the Russian Defense Ministry said. The department added that strikes with precision-guided weapons will be inflicted to suppress information attacks against Russia. The Ministry of Defense calls on citizens of Ukraine, attracted by Ukrainian nationalists to carry out provocations against the Russian Federation, as well as residents living near the relay nodes to leave their homes.

Reports accusing Russia of using cluster and vacuum munitions in the conflict in Ukraine are "false," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. "Russian troops do not carry out any strikes on civilian infrastructure or residential complexes. This is out of the question. We are talking only about the demilitarisation of Ukraine, about military facilities," Peskov said, speaking at a briefing.

The Russian MoD has accused the Ukrainian Army and nationalist units of deploying artillery and mortar system in heavily built up areas to shield them from Russian attack. The MoD accused Ukraine of using phosphorus munitions in areas around Kiev and near Gostomel Airport on a wide scale.

During the 13 days of the escalation of the conflict in the Donbass, the armed forces of Ukraine fired more than 700 times at the DPR, as a result, 24 civilians were killed, the representative office of the republic at the Joint Center for Control and Coordination of the ceasefire said.

Activists of the Brazilian radical left party Causa Operaria (from the port. "Working Interest") called on the authorities of their country to recognize the Luhansk and Donetsk People's Republics. The corresponding actions under the general slogan "We all support Russia" took place on Tuesday, a TASS correspondent reports.

Brazilian communists with red party flags and the Russian tricolor came out to the buildings of Russian diplomatic missions - the embassy in Brasilia and consulates general in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro - and condemned NATO's attempts to militarize Ukraine. "For the defeat of NATO in Ukraine," read one of the posters at the rally in Rio de Janeiro, "We all support Russia," said the second.

The International Court of Justice in The Hague will hold hearings on Ukraine's accusations against Russia of genocide on March 7 and 8, and will discuss Kiev's request for interim measures, the court said. "The International Court of Justice, the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, will hold public hearings in the case concerning Allegations of Genocide under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (Ukraine v. Russian Federation) on Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 March 2022, at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the seat of the Court," the court said. Crude oil prices crossed $100 a barrel, driven upward by expectations of lost supply from Russia, which has seen its economy targeted by punishing economic sanctions from NATO powers and their allies in recent days. Russia is the world’s largest exporter of fossil fuel products and the second-largest exporter of crude oil, after Saudi Arabia. The IEA Ministerial Meeting resulted in an agreement of some of its members to release 60 million barrels of crude oil from various countries’ strategic petroleum reserves. The United States agreed to release 30 million barrels of crude oil from its SPR. The rest of the IEA members in Europe and Asia will release the remaining 30 million barrels. The concerted release is said to have a greater impact on the global oil markets than just a single country’s release—but analysts have questioned how much of an impact it would really have on the global markets, considering that 60 million barrels is less than a day of global oil demand.

Nearly 680,000 people have fled Ukraine into Poland and other neighbouring countries in the wake of Russia’s invasion, the United Nations’ refugee agency (UNHCR) says. The latest and still growing count had 281,000 people entering Poland, more than 84,500 in Hungary, about 36,400 in Moldova, over 32,500 in Romania and about 30,000 in Slovakia, UNHCR spokeswoman Shabia Mantoo said. The rest were scattered in unidentified other countries, she added.

Mantoo told a news briefing in Geneva that there were reports of people waiting for up to 60 hours to enter Poland, while queues at the Romanian border are up to 20km (12 miles) long. Cars have been backed up for several kilometres at some border crossings as authorities in Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova mobilised to receive Ukrainians and provide shelter, food and legal help. Most of the arrivals have been women and children. All men aged between 18 and 60 have been prevented from leaving Ukraine to stay and fight.
