A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.
On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that since the beginning of the day, there have been 122 combat clashes.
During the day, aviation, missile troops and artillery of the Defense Forces hit 13 personnel concentration areas and three Russian control points.
Russian zagarbniki launched three missiles and 38 aviation strikes on the territory of Ukraine with the use of 55 CABs, also engaged 533 kamikadze drones. Along with that, Russia has fired over 2,900 shells on positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements with barrel and jet artillery, mortars, firearms and armaments of fighting vehicles.
In the Kharkiv direction, the Russian occupiers supported by aviation six times unsuccessfully attacked in the areas of Lipciv and Vovchansk. According to preliminary information, since the beginning of the day, Russian loss has left 96 occupants dead and wounded, a tank, three artillery systems and 11 cars destroyed. 18 personnel shelters, two places of ammunition storage and a repository of fuel and oil materials were affected.
In the Kupyansky direction, Russian forces made 11 attempts to push Ukrainian units from occupied positions in the areas of settlements Sinkivka, Stepova Novoselivka, Piční and Kruglyakivka. Eight Russian attacks successfully repelled, there are three combat clashes near the stepovoí̈ novoselívka.
In the Lyman direction, Russian invaders tried 15 times to advance in the areas of Grekivka, Nevsky, Terniv and Serebryansky forest. Defenders of Ukraine successfully repelled 14 Russian attacks. Near the settlement point of Terna, one battle is still ongoing. The situation is controlled, no loss of positions is allowed.
In the Sívers Сіkomu direction, the setting of significant changes has not been experienced. Since the beginning of the day, the Russian occupiers carried out nine assault actions in the areas of Verkhnyokamiansky, Rozdolivka and the Chashovoy Yar microdistrict - Noviy. Six Russian attacks ended unsuccessfully, three combat still ongoing. The situation is under the control of Defense Forces units.
Significantly activated his efforts the aggressor in the Kramatorsky direction. By the support of aviation Russian occupiers 17 times stormed the positions of Ukrainian defenders from the Bakhmuta area. The fights were sharpened near Bogdanivka, Kalinivka, Ivanívs Боkogo, Klí Боíivka and Andriyivka. The situation is intense. 12 Russian attacks by the Ukrainian military repelled, five more fighting continue. Defense forces are putting maximum effort to restrain the opponent in a specified direction.
In the Toretsky direction, the Russian occupiers made six attempts to break through the defensive borders of Ukrainian defenders east of the North. Ukrainian soldiers repelled four Russian attacks, two more combat continues.
Russian troops maintain high activity in the pokrovsky direction. The number of encounters has increased to 43. With the support of all available means of fire effect (aviation, artillery, armaments of fighting vehicles, strike BPLA, FPV-drones and firearms) the garbniki continue to pressure the fighting order of defenders of Ukraine near Oleksandropol, Novooleksandrivka, Kalinovoye, Evgenivka, Sokola, Novoselivka the First and Karlivka. Ukrainian warriors repelled 31 Russian attacks. 12 battle clashes are still going on. Defense forces are exerting maximum effort to exhaust and restrain Russian forces in the direction.
The previous Russian losses consisted of over 207 occupants killed and injured. A combat armored vehicle and a car were destroyed. The losses are in the making.
In the Kurakhiv direction, the situation of significant changes has not experienced. Since the beginning of the day, there have been 10 clashes here. The tense situation remains in the area of krasnogorívki, where Russia maintains significant activity. Units of the Ukrainian Army carry out measures to increase defense resilience.
In the Vremívs вихkomu and Oríhívs Наky directions, the situation has not experienced significant changes. .
In the direction of the pridniprovsk, five Russian assault actions were not successful. A loss of positions is not allowed.
In other directions, the situation remained without significant changes.
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that units of the Sever Group of Forces improved the tactical situation along the front lines and inflicted losses on manpower and hardware of the AFU 36th Marines Brigade, 42nd Mechanised Brigade, 57th Motorised Infantry Brigade, 71st Infantry Brigade, 120th, and 125th territorial defence brigades near Volchansk, Staritsa, and Liptsy (Kharkov region).
The AFU losses amounted to up to 300 Ukrainian troops, two pickup trucks, two 152-mm D-20 howitzer, one 122-mm D-30 howitzer, and one UK-made 105-mm L-119 howitzer.
In addition, one AFU ammunition depot has been destroyed.
Units of the Zapad Group of Forces took more advantageous lines and inflicted losses on formations of the AFU 14th, 116th mechanised brigades, 77th Airmobile Brigade, and 1st National Guard Brigade near Petropavlovka, Sinkovka (Kharkov region), Stelmakhovka, and Chervonaya Dibrova (Lugansk People's Republic).
Two counter-attacks launched by formations of the AFU 3rd Tank Brigade and 110th Territorial Defence Brigade were repelled.
The AFU losses amounted to up to 450 Ukrainian troops, one tank, two armoured fighting vehicles, and two motor vehicles.
In the course of counter-battery warfare, one U.S.-made 155-mm M109 Paladin self-propelled artillery system, one U.S.-made 155-mm M777 howitzer, one 152-mm 2A65 Msta-B howitzer, one 152-mm D-20 howitzer, one 122-mm 2S1 Gvozdika self-propelled artillery system, one 122-mm D-30 howitzer, and one UK-made 105-mm L-119 howitzer were neutralised.
Two AFU field ammunition depots were destroyed.
Units of the Yug Group of Forces improved the tactical situation along the front line and inflicted losses on manpower and hardware of the AFU 5th Assault Brigade, 71st Jaeger Brigade, and 79th Air Assault Brigade near Minkovka, Kalinin, Chasov Yar, Konstantinovka, Katerinovka, and Karlovka (Donetsk People's Republic).
The AFU losses amounted to up to 560 Ukrainian troops, one U.S.-made M113 armoured personnel carrier, one U.S.-made Humvee armoured fighting vehicle, and five pickup trucks.
In the course of counter-battery warfare, two U.S.-made 155-mm M777 howitzers, one U.S.-made 155-mm M198 howitzer, one 152-mm 2A65 Msta-B howitzer, two 152-mm D-20 howitzers, two 122-mm D-30 howitzers, one UK-made 105-mm L-119 howitzer, and two Bukovel-AD and Anklav electronic warfare stations were neutralised.
Two AFU ammunition depots were destroyed.
Units of the Tsentr Group of Forces improved the tactical situation and inflicted losses on formations of the AFU 27th, 110th mechanised brigades, 144th Infantry Brigade, and 109th Territorial Defence Brigade near Novgorodskoye, Yevgenovka, Umanskoye, Vozdvizhenka, Kamishevka, and Toretsk (Donetsk People's Republic).
Five counter-attacks launched by assault detachments of the AFU 23rd, 24th, 47th mechanised brigades, and 68th Jaeger Brigade were repelled.
The AFU losses amounted to up to 355 Ukrainian troops, six motor vehicles, two 152-mm 2A65 Msta-B howitzers, one 122-mm D-30 howitzer, one U.S.-made 105-mm M119 howitzer, and one BM-21 Grad MLRS combat vehicle.
Units of the Vostok Group of Forces took more advantageous lines and inflicted losses on manpower and hardware of the AFU 72nd Mechanised Brigade, 58th Motorised Infantry Brigade, 102th, and 108th territorial defence brigades near Pavlovka, Shevchenko, Vladimirovka (Donetsk People's Republic), and Marphopol (Zaporozhye region).
The AFU losses amounted to up to 120 Ukrainian troops, two infantry fighting vehicles, three motor vehicles, two Polish-made 155-mm Krab self-propelled artillery systems, and one UK-made 155-mm FH-70 howitzer.
Two AFU field ammunition depots were destroyed.
Units of the Dnepr Group of Forces inflicted losses on formations of the AFU 128th Mountain Assault Brigade and 123rd Territorial Defence Brigade near Kamenskoye (Zaporozhye region) and Dnepropetrovskoye (Kherson region).
The AFU losses amounted to up to 110 Ukrainian troops, one U.S.-made M113 armoured personnel carrier, four motor vehicles, one Polish-made 155-mm Krab self-propelled artillery system, one U.S.-made 155-mm M777 howitzer, one 152-mm D-20 howitzer, and one 122-mm D-30 howitzer.
Operational-Tactical Aviation, unmanned aerial vehicles, Missile Troops and Artillery of the Russian Groups of Forces delivered strikes at command posts of the AFU 5th Assault Brigade, 54th, and 92nd mechanised brigades, as well as engaged manpower and hardware clusters in 124 areas during the past 24 hours.
Air defence units shot down 43 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles, ten U.S.-made HIMARS MLRS projectiles, and three French-made Hammer guided aerial bombs.
In total, 613 airplanes and 276 helicopters, 25,934 unmanned aerial vehicles, 531 air defence missile systems, 16,374 tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles, 1,344 combat vehicles equipped with MLRS, 10,645 field artillery guns and mortars, as well as 22,687 units of special military equipment have been destroyed during the special military operation.
