Russo-Ukraine War - 18 June 2024 - Day 846

A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that Russian forces have likely taken control of the village of Novooleksandrivka, located approximately 20km north of Avdiivka, Donetsk oblast. The area has seen heavy fighting throughout 2024 and Russia has been gradually advancing since capturing Avdiivka in February 2024.

By taking control of Novooleksandrivka, Russia moves closer to threatening the T-05-04 road, one of the main supply routes for Ukrainian forces further east. It is highly likely that the village of Vozdvyzhenka will be Russia's next objective as it seeks to sever the road and disrupt Ukrainian logistics.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Ukrainian troops continue the defensive operation and resolutely oppose the attempts of the Russian enemy to advance deep into the territory of the country. The hottest remains the situation on the Pokrovsky direction.

Since the beginning of the day, there have been 113 combat clashes.

Russian zagarbniki launched 33 aviation strikes on the territory of Ukraine with the use of 45 KABs and deployed 482 kamikaze drones. Also, Russian forces carried out almost 2,900 shells on positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements with barrel and jet artillery, mortars, artillery and armaments of fighting vehicles.
Six combat clashes took place in the Kharkiv direction today. Ukrainian troops were hindered by four attacks of Russians in the Vovchansk district. Repelling of two more Russian assault actions in the regions of Vovchansk and Liptsiv continues.
In the Kupyansky direction, the number of combat clashes increased to 12. Ukrainian soldiers repelled eight Russian attacks near Sinkivka, Stepova Novoselivka and Pi Наany, four more clashes continue.
In the Lyman direction, Russian forces tried 13 times to push Ukrainian defenders out of occupied positions in the areas of Grekivka, Makiyivka, Terniv and Serebryansky forestry. 12 attacks were repelled by Ukrainian defenders. The Russian forces did not succeed. The fight is ongoing at the Terniv location.
In the sívers напряkomu direction, Ukrainian troops repelled 13 attacks of the zagarbnikív near rozdolívka, spirnogo, verkhnyokamâns Наkogo and viymki. The situation is controlled, loss of territories and positions is not allowed. Two more clashes in the area of Verkhnyokamâns Верkogo continue.
Russian aggressor activated in the kramators уkomu direction. During the current day, the zagarbniki made six attempts to approach the microdistrict of the New Time Yar, four of which were repelled by the defenders of Ukraine. Two combat clashes are still ongoing.
In addition, Russia has been carrying out active assault operations near Ivanivsky, South and New York, where nine fighting is currently ongoing.
The hottest remains the situation in the Pokrovsky direction, where the number of Russian attacks has reached 37. The Russian invaders tried to break through Ukrainian defense near Oleksandropol, Novooleksandrívka, Evgenívka, Novoselívka the First, Novopokrovskogo, Sokola and Dwarf. Defense Forces are taking measures to prevent the opponent's advancement and stabilize the situation. Knocked out 20 attacks, another 17 fights continue.
Previously, the Russian aggressor's losses for today in this area amounted to about 180 occupants killed and wounded. Destroyed one MT-LB, mortar, cannon, four cars, damaged two tanks of Russians.
In the Kurakhivsk direction, three Russian attempts to push Ukrainian defenders from occupied positions in the area of Krasnogorivka were unsuccessful. Four more fights going on here. The situation is under the control of Defense Forces.
Ukrainian defenders are destroying the Russian invaders. Since the beginning of the day, total losses of Russians amount to 86 persons. A Russian vehicle has also been destroyed.
In the direction of success, there were no two assault actions of the zagarbnikív near Urožaynogo and Novodarívka.
Also failed two attacks of the occupiers in the Orihiv direction - in the areas of Novodanilivka and Mala Tokmačka.

In other directions, the situation has not changed significantly.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that units of the Sever Group of Forces inflicted losses on manpower and hardware of the AFU 57th Motorised Infantry Brigade, 36th Marines Brigade, 120th, and 125th territorial defence brigades near Volchansk, Volokhovksoye, Sinelnikovo, and Liptsy (Kharkov region).

Two counter-attacks launched by assault detachments of the AFU 71st Jaeger Brigade and 13th National Guard Brigade were repelled.

The AFU losses amounted to up to 130 Ukrainian troops, two armoured fighting vehicles, including one U.S.-made Stryker infantry fighting vehicle, one U.S.-made 155-mm M109 Paladin self-propelled artillery system, one 152-mm D-20 howitzer, one 122-mm Gvozdika self-propelled artillery system, and one 122-mm D-30 howitzer.

Units of the Zapad Group of Forces took more advantageous lines and inflicted losses on formations of the AFU 163rd Mechanised Brigade, 3rd Tank Brigade, and 3rd Assault Brigade near Novovodyanoye (Lugansk People's Republic), Peschannoye (Kharkov region), and Torskoye (Donetsk People's Republic). Four counter-attacks launched by assault detachments of the AFU 115th Mechanised Brigade and 12th Special Operations Brigade were repelled.

The AFU losses amounted to up to 455 Ukrainian troops, one 122-mm Gvozdika self-propelled artillery system, and one U.S.-made 105-mm M119 howitzer.

Units of the Yug Group of Forces improved the tactical situation along the front lines and inflicted losses on manpower and hardware of the AFU 79th Air Assault Brigade, 81st Airmobile Brigade, 80th, and 93rd mechanised brigades near Grigorovka, Katerinovka, Predtechino, and Serebryanka (Donetsk People's Republic).

The AFU losses amounted to up to 665 Ukrainian troops, two armoured fighting vehicles, including one U.S.-made M113 armoured personnel carrier, two motor vehicles, and one 122-mm D-30 howitzer. One AFU ammunition depot was also destroyed.

Units of the Tsentr Group of Forces improved the tactical situation and inflicted losses on formations of the AFU 68th Jaeger Brigade, 144th Infantry Brigade, 24th Mechanised Brigade, and 109th Territorial Defence Brigade near Vozdvizhenka, Kamishevka, Novgorodskoye, and Toretsk (Donetsk People's Republic).

Four counter-attacks launched by assault detachments of the AFU 142nd Infantry Brigade, 23rd, and 110th mechanised brigades were repelled.

The AFU losses amounted to up to 355 Ukrainian troops, two U.S.-made MaxxPro armoured fighting vehicles, two motor vehicles, one 152-mm Msta-B howitzer, one 152-mm D-20 howitzer, one 122-mm Gvozdika self-propelled artillery system, two 122-mm D-30 howitzers, two U.S.-made 105-mm M119 howitzers, and one 100-mm Rapira anti-tank gun.

Units of the Vostok Group of Forces took more advantageous lines and inflicted losses on manpower and hardware of the AFU 72nd Mechanised Brigade, 108th, 123rd territorial defence brigades, and 21st National Guard Brigade near Zaliznichnoye (Zaporozhye region), Dobrovolye, Neskuchnoye, and Okryabr (Donetsk People's Republic).

The AFU losses amounted to up to 155 Ukrainian troops, one armoured fighting vehicle, one pickup truck, one Polish-made 155-mm Krab self-propelled artillery system, one UK-made 155-mm FH-70 howitzer, one 152-mm D-20 howitzer, and one Anklav-N electronic warfare station.

Units of the Dnepr Group of Forces inflicted losses on formations of the AFU 128th Mountain Assault Brigade, 37th Marines Brigade, and 121st Territorial Defence Brigade near Daryevka, Osokorovka (Kherson region), and Nesteriyanka (Zaporozhye region).

The AFU losses amounted to up to 80 Ukrainian troops, six motor vehicles, three 152-mm D-20 howitzers, one 122-mm D-30 howitzer, and one U.S.-made 105-mm M119 howitzer.

Operational-Tactical Aviation, unmanned aerial vehicles, and Missile Troops and Artillery of the Russian Groups of Forces wiped out one radar station and two launchers of the S-300 SAM system, one attack UAVs workshop, one materiel depot of the AFU 44th Artillery Brigade, from which weapons and military hardware supplied to the Kiev regime by the Western countries was unloaded and distributed, as well as engaged clusters of enemy manpower and hardware in 124 areas.

Air Defence units shot down 24 unmanned aerial vehicles and one Neptune-MD long-range guided missile over the past 24 hours.

In total, 613 airplanes and 276 helicopters, 25,891 unmanned aerial vehicles, 531 air defence missile systems, 16,366 tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles, 1,343 combat vehicles equipped with MLRS, 10,610 field artillery guns and mortars, as well as 22,645 units of special military equipment have been destroyed during the special military operation.
