A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that as previously reported, Russia has worked to prepare a small number of T-14 Armata main battle tanks for the type’s first operational deployment in Ukraine.

However, in recent months, deployed Russian forces were reluctant to accept the first tranche of T-14 allocated to them because the vehicles were in such poor condition.

It is unclear exactly what aspects of the vehicles prompted this reaction, but within the last three years, Russian officials have publicly described problems with the T-14’s engine and thermal imaging systems. In 2021, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu described the planned production run for 2022 as only an “experimental-industrial” batch. Therefore, it is unlikely that any deployed T-14 tanks will have met the usual standards for new equipment to be deemed operational.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that during the day of January 25, Russian forces launched 21x air strikes and 5x missile strikes. The Russian occupant forces also launched 27x MLRS attacks.
The threat of Russian air and missile strikes across Ukraine remains high.

Russia continues to conduct offensive operations on Bakhmut axis, suffering numerous casualties. On Lyman and Avdiivka axes, Russian forces conducted unsuccessful offensives, all Russian attacks were repelled. On other axes, the Russian occupiers are on the defensive.

Volyn, Polissya, Sivershchyna, and Slobozhanshchyna axes: no significant changes, no Russian offensive groups were found. Russia employed artillery to shell the vicinities of over 20x settlements, including, Mykhal’chyna Sloboda, Leonivka, Yasna Zorya (Chernihiv oblast), Budarky, Veterynarne, Hatyshche, Vovchans’k, Krasne Pershe, Neskuchne, and Strilecha (Kharkiv oblast).
Kup’yans’k axis: Russian forces shelled Syn’kivka, Ivanivka, Kotlyarivka, Tabaivka (Kharkiv oblast), and Stel’makhivka (Luhansk oblast).
Lyman axis: Makiivka, Ploshchanka, Chervonopopivka, Nevs’ke (Luhansk oblast), and Yampolivka (Donetsk oblast) came under Russian fire.
Bakhmut axis: Russian forces shelled the vicinities of 17x settlements, including Spirne, Bakhmut, Stupochky, Bilohorivka, Krasna Hora, Klishchiivka, and Kurdyumivka (Donetsk oblast).

Zaporizhzhia axis: tank and artillery fire affected the vicinities of 20x settlements, including Vremivka, Vil’ne Pole, Novopil’ (Donetsk oblast), Mala Tokmachka, Novodanylivka, Orikhiv (Zaporizhzhia oblast).
Kherson axis: 16x settlements, including Havrylivka, Dudchany, Kachkarivka, Bilozerka, Novokairy, Respublikanets’, and Kherson, came under Russian artillery fire.

Over the last few days alone, about 100x wounded Russian invaders have been brought to the Starobil’s’k city hospital (Luhansk oblast). Due to the overcrowding of the hospital, they are transported to hospitals in Luhansk or to the territory of Russia once stabilized.

In Horlivka (Donetsk oblast), the Russian occupiers are forcing employees of local so-called “republican” enterprises to receive russian passports. In case of failure to comply by March 1, 2023, the employees will have been fired.

Russia continues to exert pressure and intimidate the residents of the temporarily occupied territories. Thus, in the Dzhankoi district (Autonomous Republic of Crimea), the Russian occupiers searched the homes of more than 20x Crimean Tatar families and made 6x arrests, allegedly on suspicion of preparing sabotage and terrorist attacks.

Ukrainian Air Force launched 14x air strikes on the concentrations of Russian troops and 2x air strikes on the positions of Russian anti-aircraft missile systems. Moreover, Ukrainian Defense Forces shot down 1x Su-25 aircraft, 1x Ka-52 attack helicopter, and 2x “Orlan-10” UAVs.
