A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.
On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]
The UK Ministry of Defence reported that on 11 January 2023, a group of at least 10 vessels of Russia's Black Sea Fleet (BSF) departed the Novorossiysk Naval Facility.
Given the type and number of vessels putting to sea at the same time, the activity is likely a fleet dispersal in response to a specific threat to Novorossiysk that Russia believes it has identified.
It is unlikely that the deployment signifies preparation for unusual maritime-launched cruise-missile strikes. It is highly unlikely that the fleet is preparing for amphibious assault operations. The BSF largely remains fixed by perceived threats from Ukraine, and continues to prioritise force protection over offensive or patrol operations.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that having no success on the battlefield, Russian occupants continue to destroy the infrastructure and civilian residences. Russia launches strikes at settlements in violation of virtually all rules of International Humanitarian Law, the laws and principles of war. Thus, a Russian missile hit an apartment building in the city of Dnipro today. At the moment, 5 civilians are reported dead and 39 wounded, including 7 children. The rescue operation continues.
During the day of January 14, Russian forces launched a total of 3x air strikes and about 50x missile strikes. Today, Russian forces launched massive missile attacks on Ukraine.
In the morning, the capital was attacked by S-400 (S-300) anti-aircraft guided missiles from the northern axis. Later, the terrorist state used high-precision weapons: airborne cruise missiles Kh-101/Kh-555, Kh-22, seaborne cruise missiles Kalibr, guided aircraft missiles Kh-59 against the critical infrastructure of Ukraine.
Russian forces launched a total of about 28x cruise missiles of various types and 5x guided aircraft missiles.
The forces and means of the Air Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in cooperation with the units of other elements of the Defense Forces destroyed 18x cruise missiles and 3x guided aircraft missiles. The updated figures are to follow.
In addition, the Russian occupant forces launched 50x MLRS attacks.
The threat of air and missile strikes by Russian forces across Ukraine remains high.
Russia does not abandon its intentions to completely capture Donetsk oblast. To do so, it focuses its main efforts on offensive operations on Bakhmut axis. Heavy battles for Soledar continue. Ukrainian forces repel Russian attacks round the clock. The Russian occupants suffer heavy losses. Russia is also advancing on Lyman, Avdiivka, and Novopavlivka axes. The Russian invaders are trying to improve their tactical situation on Kup'yans'k axis, while defending on Zaporizhzhia and Kherson axes.
Volyn, Polissya, Sivershchyna, and Slobozhanshchyna axes: no significant changes. No offensive groups of the adversary were found. The republic of belarus continues to participate in the russian aggression against Ukraine by allowing to use its territory and airspace for strikes, as well as ammunition and materiel.
The vicinities of settlements of Vovkivka, Kindrativka (Sumy oblast), Starytsya, Hatyshche, Vovchans'k, Strilecha, Ternova, Khatnje, and Topoli (Kharkiv oblast) were shelled with mortars and artillery.
Kup'yans'k axis: the vicinities of Dvorichna, Orlyanka, Kotlyarivka, Krokhmal'ne (Kharkiv oblast), Novoselivs'ke, and Stel'makhivka (Luhansk oblast) were shelled.
Lyman axis: Russian forces fired at the vicinities of Makiivka, Nevs'ke, Kreminna, and Chervonopopivka (Luhansk oblast).
Bakhmut axis: Spirne, Vyimka, Bilohorivka, Soledar, Bakhmut, Druzhba, and Pivnichne (Donetsk oblast) were shelled.
Avdiivka axis: Krasnohorivka, Vesele, Avdiivka, Mar'inka, Vodyane, and Novomykhailivka (Donetsk oblast) came under Russian fire.
Novopavlivka axis: Russian forces shelled Vuhledar, Prechystivka, Zolota Nyva, and Velyka Novosilka (Donetsk oblast).
Zaporizhzhia axis: attacks were reported near Malynivka, Hulyaipole, Dorozhnyanka, Zaliznychne, Charivne, Mala Tokmachka, Stepove, and Plavni (Zaporizhzhia oblast).
Kherson axis: Kherson and Dmytrivka (Mykolaiv oblast) were shelled with artillery and missile systems. There are civilian casualties.
Russian redeployment on the left-bank Kherson oblast is aimed at strengthening the defense capabilities of its units. The movement of personnel, weapons, military equipment, and ammunition is reported.
The Russian adversary continues to suffer casualties on a daily basis, and it shows. The manning level of certain units of the 3rd separate motorized rifle brigade of the 1st army corps located in the vicinity of Horlivka (Donetsk oblast) remains low, up to 40 percent. And this is despite the recent addition of mobilized and contract soldiers. It is noteworthy, that the personnel is forbidden to leave its location. This is the occupant forces' attempt to at least somehow prevent desertion.
The russian occupation authorities are revising the categories of conscription-age citizens who previously had the so-called "exemption" in the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk oblast. In particular, employees of emergency and utility services have already been warned about this.
During the day of January 14, Ukrainian Air Force launched 5x air strikes on the Russian concentrations, and missile and artillery forces hit 5x Russian concentrations and 1x ammunition depot.
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that the Russian Armed Forces once again launched a massive missile attack on Ukrainian infrastructure, and the first one this year. Russian troops reportedly used aerial decoys to deplete the air defenses of the Kyiv regime.
According to various sources, explosions were heard in Kharkiv, where after that the electricity and water supply disappeared, and the metro stopped working. In Zaporozhye, local authorities confirmed the hit of ammunition in one of the industrial enterprises. In addition, the targets of the missiles were energy facilities in Odessa, Lvov, Ivano-Frankivsk, Vinnitsa, Dnepropetrovsk, Kherson and Nikolaev. In an attempt to avoid breakdowns in the power grid, in a number of areas the power was turned off in advance.
The armed forces of Ukraine shelled the city of Pologi in the Zaporozhye region during the day. Several ammunition hit the administration building and the store, as a result, four civilians were killed, five more were seriously injured.
Earlier, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported on the tasks completed per day in the special operation zone. Russian troops destroyed two enemy sabotage and reconnaissance groups (DRGs) in the Kharkov region. Also in this direction, the American M777 howitzer and the Soviet D-20 were hit.
In the Zaporozhye region, it was possible to disable the Gvozdika self-propelled artillery mount, as well as the AN / TPQ-50 counter-battery station.
Events in Donbass
On the territory of the Lugansk People's Republic (LPR), the enemy lost one sabotage and reconnaissance group. In addition, more than 50 Ukrainian servicemen, four armored vehicles and two pickup trucks were liquidated.
In the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), over 100 soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were destroyed, including a DRG, a tank, 7 armored vehicles and 8 vehicles. In addition, an ammunition depot was disabled near the village of Gornyak, and two D-20 howitzers, one D-30, two Akatsiya self-propelled guns, as well as a US-made counter-battery station AN / TPQ-36 were hit as part of counter-battery combat.
Ukrainian troops fired again at the peaceful cities of the DPR. Donetsk, Shirokaya Balka and Yasinovataya were under fire, one man was injured.
Against the backdrop of the deteriorating situation for the Armed Forces of Ukraine near Bakhmut, Kyiv plans to send formations there, replenished with inexperienced mobilized ones, RT reports. They will probably be transferred to Kurdyumovka, Ozeryanovka, Krasnaya Gora, Paraskovievka and Toretsk, as well as to the Soledar-Bakhmut line. The total number of reinforcements can reach 2.5-3 thousand people.
