A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.
On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]
The UK Ministry of Defence reported that Russia has likely completed training of the 2nd Guards Motor Rifle Division (GMRD) in Belarus, which had been carrying out training since autumn 2022. The majority of the 2nd GMRD has now transferred back to Russia, before almost certainly being recommitted to operations in Ukraine.
The 2nd GMRD is an element of the 1st Guards Tank Army and suffered major losses in the opening phases of the conflict. It is now primarily made up of mobilised personnel operating older equipment taken from storage. Its combat effectiveness will likely be limited despite several weeks of training.
There is a realistic possibility that other Russian units are being rotated into Belarus for similar training, and that Russia will continue this model to regenerate and prepare units to maintain its force in Ukraine.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that during this day, Russian forces carried out 37x air strikes. 17 of them - with the use of Shahed-136 UAVs. All these drones were shot down.
In addition, the Russian invaders launched 59x missiles, 47x of which were destroyed. Unfortunately, there are hits on civilian objects, there are casualties among civilians. Moreover, the Russian invaders launched 53x attacks from MLRS.
Bakhmut and Novopavliv axes: in order to achieve the previously stated goals, despite significant losses, Russia continues its offensive.
Lyman and Avdiiv axes: Russian forces conducted unsuccessful actions with the aim of improving the tactical position In the rest of the axiss, it is defensive.
Volyn, Polissya, Sivershchyna, and Slobozhanshchyna axes: no changes were made, and no Russian offensive groups were detected. Joint training of the aviation component of the Oblastal grouping of the armed forces of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus continues. At the same time, areas of Tymonovychi settlements of Chernihiv Oblast were shelled by mortars and artillery; Pavlivka and Timofiivka - Sumy, as well as Strelecha, Ternova, Staritsa, Vovchanski Khutory, Kolodyazne and Novomlynsk in Kharkiv Oblast.
Kupyansk axis, Russian forces shelled the areas of Dvorichne, Orlyanka, Pishchane, Berestov and Lozova settlements of the Kharkiv Oblast; Stelmakhivka - Luhansk, as well as Ivanivka in Donetsk Oblast.
Lymanskyi axis, Makiyivka, Nevske, Chervonpopivka, Dibrova and Kuzmine in the Luhansk Oblast, as well as Yampolivka in the Donetsk Oblast, came under fire from tanks and artillery.
Bakhmut axis: in particular, Spirne, Bilogorivka, Krasna Gora, Bakhmut, Klishchiivka, Bila Gora, Severnye and New York in Donetsk Oblast were hit by fire.
Avdiiv axis: Avdiivka, Vodyane, Georgiivka and Maryinka were shelled.
Novopavliv axis: Vugledar, Velyka Novosilka and Vremivka of the Donetsk Oblast were affected by fire.
Zaporizhzhia axis: more than 20 settlements were affected by artillery fire, in particular, Novopil in Donnechyna, as well as Chervone, Gulyaipole, Zaliznychne, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanilivka, Orihiv, and Stepove in the Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
Kherson axis: the Russian occupiers again shelled the suburbs and Kherson itself with artillery.
Counter-intelligence measures are ongoing in some temporarily captured settlements of the Kherson Oblast. Russian occupiers are actively looking for Ukrainian patriots. In the building of the former Gornostaivsky Regional Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine in the Kherson Oblast, the Russian invaders set up a torture chamber. Some can get into it simply because of a speculated suspicion of cooperation with the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
In the temporarily occupied Ukrainian Simferopol, all budget institutions, under the pretext of reform, received an instruction to reduce staff by 10 percent. It is also known that lists of persons subject to "optimization" must be drawn up by February 1 of this year.
During the day, the Air Force of the Defense Forces carried out 8x strikes on areas where the Russian forces' personnel, weapons and military equipment were concentrated, as well as a strike on the position of Russian forces' anti-aircraft missile complex. In addition, during the day, Ukrainian defenders shot down 3x Russian reconnaissance UAVs.
Units of missile and artillery of the Defense Forces of Ukraine hit 3x control points, the Russian manpower concentration area, the artillery concentration area, and 2x other important military objects of the Russian invaders during the day.
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that, after a night strike by Geran-2 drones, the RF Armed Forces carried out a massive rocket attack on the Ukrainian energy infrastructure. According to independent experts, the use of UAVs made it possible to identify enemy air defense positions before the main attack.
Missile hits were recorded in Odessa, Kyiv, Vinnitsa, Zaporozhye, Kramatorsk, Dnepropetrovsk, and a number of other settlements. Basically, the targets were power plants, substations and a number of industrial enterprises where military facilities were produced. It is noted that the authorities of the country cut off the power supply in advance to avoid sudden network overloads.
Events in Donbass
In the Donetsk People's Republic, active battles are going on in most sectors of the front. Against this background, videos with episodes of armed clashes are increasingly appearing on the Web.
In particular, in the Kremennaya area, a Russian Terminator tank support combat vehicle was filmed "at work", with the help of which units of the RF Armed Forces stormed enemy positions.
In turn, part of the information about what is happening comes from the soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU): one of the fighters said that in Bakhmut, which is being stormed by volunteer detachments, the fighting has moved almost close to the river dividing the city. At the same time, part of the nearby streets are shot through.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine continue to strike at civilian targets and settlements in Donbass. Reportedly, sappers from the local authorities of the Ministry of Emergency Situations had to neutralize an unexploded shell that fell on the territory of a school in the Kirovsky district of Donetsk. The ammunition pierced the ground for several meters, for its safe extraction it was necessary to use special equipment. The task was completed successfully, the school building was not damaged during shelling and demining.
