A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that in recent days, the heaviest fighting has focused in three sectors. In the northeast, near Kremina, Ukraine has likely made small gains and successfully defended against a Russian counter-attack.

Around the Donetsk Oblast, in Bakhmut sector, Russian and Wagner proxy forces have likely been reconstituting in the town of Soledar, after capturing it earlier in the week.

In the south, in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, both sides have massed significant forces, which have conducted artillery exchanges and skirmishes, but have avoided any large-scale offensive effort.

Overall, the conflict is in a state of deadlock. However, there is a realistic possibility of local Russian advances around Bakhmut.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that during the day Russian forces conducted 26x air airstrikes and 15x MLRS attacks.

Russia does not give up its invasion plans and concentrates main efforts on further attempts to occupy Donetsk oblast. The Russian occupiers attempted unsuccessful offensives on Avdiivka axis, and continued offensives on Baknmut and Zaporizhzhia directions supported by increased number of air raids. However, the Russian occupiers stay on the defensive on other axes.

Volyn, Polissya, Sivershchyna and Slobozhanshchyna axes: no offensive groupings were detected. Russian territorial defense troops keep coming to the republic of belarus. In order to keep armed forces in full combat readiness, Belarus leadership has yet again prolonged the dates of combat readiness check of Belarus armed forces. This time it has been prolonged until January 30.

The threat of provocative border armed incidents remains. The Republic of Belarus continues to provide comprehensive support to russian aggression. In addition to joint exercises, training of Russian units continues on the territory of Belarus.

Russia strengthens control over civilian population in the temporarily captured territories of Kherson oblast. In particular, Russian occupiers take measures to create a database with information about actual addresses (places of living) of the local population, threatening to cut off electricity. Under the guise of implementing an "electricity saving program", the so-called "authority" is taking coercive measures to sign the "act of confirmation of the actual place of residence of a citizen".

During the past day, Ukrainian Air Force conducted 13x air strikes on Russian concentration areas and 2x air strikes against russian air defense systems. Ukrainian missile and artillery units attacked 1x concentration of Russian troops.
