A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that since at least June 2022, Russian Aerospace Forces have almost certainly used Su-57 FELON to conduct missions against Ukraine. FELON is Russia's most advanced fifth-generation supersonic combat jet, employing stealth technologies and highly advanced avionics. These missions have likely been limited to flying over Russian territory, launching long range air-to-surface or air-to-air missiles into Ukraine.

Recent commercially available imagery shows five FELON parked at Akhtubinsk Air Base, which hosts the 929th Flight Test Centre. As this is the only known FELON base, these aircraft have likely been involved in operations against Ukraine.

Russia is highly likely prioritising avoiding the reputational damage, reduced export prospects, and the compromise of sensitive technology which would come from any loss of FELON over Ukraine. This is symptomatic of Russia's continued risk-averse approach to employing its air force in the war. Defence Intelligence analysis of this satellite image, dated 25 December 2022, identified five Su-57 FELON multirole aircraft at Akhtubinsk airfield, Russia.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that during the day of January 9, Russian forces launched 1x missile attack on Kharkiv and about 10 MLRS attacks, in particular, targeting the civilian infrastructure of Donetsk, Mykolaiv, and Kherson oblasts.

The threat of air and missile strikes throughout Ukraine remains high.

Sivershchyna and Slobozhanshchyna axes: Russian forces fired at the positions of Ukrainian troops and civilian targets in the vicinities of settlements of Buchky (Chernihiv oblast); Starykove, Shalyhine, Volfyne, Basivka, Petrushivka (Sumy oblast), Strilecha, Zelene, Ambarne, and Hatyshche (Kharkiv oblast).
Kup'yans'k and Lyman axes: Russian forces fired tanks, mortars, artillery and missile systems at the vicinities of 16 settlements. Among them are Dvorichna, Kup'yans'k, Kyslivka, Kotlyarivka, Krokhmal'ne (Kharkiv oblast), Stel'makhivka, Makiivka, Ploshchanka, and Dibrova (Luhansk oblast).
Bakhmut axis: more than 15x settlements came under fire. In particular, those are Spirne, Berestove, Bilohorivka, Soledar, and Bakhmut (Donetsk oblast).
Avdiivka axis: Russian fire was reported near Avdiivka, Vesele, Nevel's'ke, Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, Mar'inka, and Novomykhailivka (Donetsk oblast).
Novopavlivka axis: Vremivka, Velyka Novosilka, and Vuhledar (Donetsk oblast) were shelled.
Zaporizhzhia axis: Russian forces shelled the vicinities of 13x settlements. Among them are Zelene Pole, Novopil' (Donetsk oblast), Hulyaipole, Charivne, Shcherbaky, and Stepove (Zaporizhzhia oblast).
Kherson axis: civilian infrastructure of Chornobaivka, Antonivka, Kherson, and Zolota Balka, was damaged by artillery shelling in particular. There are civilian casualties.

According to the available information, the so-called prosecutor's office of the Russian occupation authorities started its work from the so-called "nationalization" of local enterprises in Nyzhni Sirohozy (Kherson oblast), on January 9, 2023.

Russia continues to suffer losses. Thus, up to 300x occupants have been taken to the city hospital of Lysychans'k (Luhansk oblast), over the first week of 2023 alone.

The Ukrainian Air Force launched 17x air strikes on the concentrations of the Russian invaders and 3x air strikes on the positions of the Russian forces' anti-aircraft missile systems.

At the same time, units of missile troops and artillery of the Ukrainian Defense Forces hit 1x command post and 1x concentration of the Russian occupants' manpower.

In addition, 2 Krab self-propelled artillery mounts, 2 Ukrainian Akatsia self-propelled howitzers and a D-30 howitzer were destroyed in the DPR and the Zaporozhye region.

Fighter aircraft in the DPR shot down Su-25 and MiG-29 aircraft, as well as a Mi-8 helicopter of the Ukrainian Air Force. Air defense systems destroyed 8 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles in the LPR and Kharkiv region, intercepted 10 shells of HIMARS and Uragan multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) in the DPR and Zaporozhye region.

Kherson region

In Kherson, controlled by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, an explosion damaged a critical infrastructure facility, as well as an electrical substation. This was stated by the head of the regional military administration, Yaroslav Yanushevich, appointed by Kyiv, without specifying what kind of enterprise he was talking about.

Zaporozhye region

The director of the Mikhailovsky vocational school, suspected of assisting the Ukrainian military, was expelled to the territory controlled by Kyiv. It is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the power structures of the region. According to the source, the head of the educational institution collected funds for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, spread information about the imminent return of the Ukrainian authorities and sabotaged the educational process.

In the center of Melitopol, an ammunition cache was found, which contained, among other things, devices for remote contact detonation of explosives. In addition, in an abandoned building there were several boxes with grenades, shots for a grenade launcher.

DPR

During the day, Ukrainian troops opened fire on Donetsk, as well as the settlements of Aleksandrovka and Gorlovka. As a result of shelling in Donetsk, a civilian was killed, 3 more civilians were injured. Residential buildings were also damaged.

Heavy fighting continues in Soledar. Detachments of PMC "Wagner" storm the building of the city administration, it is also known that the "musicians" entrenched along the line of private buildings along the Soledar-Sol highway. Colonel of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the LPR Vitaly Kiselev stated that the Ukrainian formations continue to put up stiff resistance to the advancing PMC units.

The head of the government of the republic, Vitaly Khotsenko, said that after the resumption of work of a large kaolin deposit, which is strategically important for cement production, the DPR plans to export it outside Russia.

LC

On the territory of the camp "Forest Fairy Tale" in the Severodonetsk region, employees of the special services of the LPR found evidence of the training of underage saboteurs by foreign instructors. The facility reportedly contained remnants of foreign weapons, anti-Russian literature, maps, and "educational materials" - for example, a dummy "shahid's belt", on which children trained to work with improvised explosive devices.

The representative of the People's Militia of the LPR, Ivan Filiponenko, said that the Ukrainian DRGs became more active on the line of contact with the onset of frost. At the same time, all attempts at sabotage are stopped, he added.

Defence Intelligence analysis of this satellite image, dated 25 December 2022, identified five Su-57 FELON multirole aircraft at Akhtubinsk airfield, Russia.
