A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.
On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]
The UK Ministry of Defence reported that on 27 December 2022, Oleksiyy Danilov, secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council, reported that Russia had relocated long range aviation (LRA) Tu-95MS BEAR heavy bombers and Tu-22M3 BACKFIRE medium bombers to Russia's far east.
On 5 and 26 December 2022, the LRA's Engels air base was struck and several aircraft damaged. Russia has highly likely responded to the incidents by conducting a general dispersal of LRA aircraft, especially to airfields further away from Ukraine.
The LRA will still be able to fire air launched cruise missiles into Ukraine because the weapons have a 5000km range, in addition to the flight range of the bombers. However, operating from dispersal locations will add additional maintenance stress and will further deplete the limited flying hours available on these aging aircraft.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that to maintain the offensive potential and replenish losses, Russia continues to carry out mobilization measures. During the day, Russian forces carried out 8 airstrikes and carried out more than 10 MLRS attacks.
The threat of Russian air and missile strikes on critical infrastructure objects remains throughout the territory of Ukraine.
The main efforts of the Russian occupiers are focused on attempts to completely capture the Donetsk oblast within the administrative border. They are conducting offensive operations in the Bakhmut and Lyman directions.
Russia is unsuccessfully trying to improve the tactical position in the Kupyansk and Avdiivka directions. On Novopavlivskyi, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson - it is being defended.
There are no significant changes on the Volyn, Polissya, Siverskyi and Slobozhanskyi directions. There were no signs of the formation of Russian offensive groups. At the same time, the Russian invaders are shelling the positions of Ukrainian troops and civilian objects along the entire contact line.
In the direction of Slobozhanskyi, the districts of Starytsa, Ohirtseve, Vovchansk, Ustynivka, and Fiholivka of Kharkiv oblast were damaged by fire.
In the Kupyansk direction, Dvorichna, Vilshana, Kupyansk, Kislivka, Kotlyarivka, Krokhmalne and Berestove in the Kharkiv oblast and Novoselivske and Stelmakhivka in the Luhansk oblast came under the influence of fire.
On the Lyman direction, Russian shelling was recorded in Makiivka, Ploshchanka, Kuzmyne and Dibrove, Luhansk oblast.
In the direction of Bakhmut, the Russian occupiers shelled Spirne, Berestove, Bilohorivka, Vesele, Soledar, Krasna Hora, Bakhmut, Bila Hora, Kurdyumivka, Diliivka, Pivnichne, Mayorsk and New York in Donetsk oblast.

In the direction of Novopavlivsk, Russian forces shelled Mykilske, Vuhledar and Prechystivka in Donetsk oblast.
In the Zaporizhzhia direction, the areas of Zelene Pole and Novopil settlements of the Donetsk oblast came under Russian artillery fire; Hulyaipole, Zaliznychne, Charivne, Shcherbaky and Stepove in Zaporizhzhia and Nikopol in the Dnipropetrovsk oblast.
In the Kherson direction, Russia does not stop terrorizing the civilian population. Civil infrastructure and civilians in Chornobayivka and Kherson were damaged by the artillery shelling.
The military-political leadership of the Russian Federation is taking measures to prevent the mass departure of men of conscription age abroad before the next wave of mobilization, which is expected in January of this year. A complete ban on crossing the state border for men of conscription age is not excluded.
Forced passporting of the population in the temporarily occupied and occupied territories of Luhansk oblast continues. Thus, banking institutions in the occupied region require passports of the russian federation to issue payment cards.
During the day, the Ukrainian aviation made 15 strikes on Russian concentration areas, as well as 3 strikes on the positions of its anti-aircraft missile systems. At the same time, Ukrainian defenders shot down a Russian Su-25 aircraft and a Mi-8 helicopter.
Units of missile troops and artillery of the Defense Forces of Ukraine carried out fire damage to the area where the Russian occupiers' manpower and military equipment were concentrated.
