A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that Russia continues to commit what are nominally six separate armies to its Donbas offensive. At full strength, before the invasion, these formations were established for around 150,000 personnel. In recent weeks, Russia has often operated with company-sized groupings of around 100 personnel when undertaking offensive operations in any one sector at a time.

However, Russia has struggled to sustain effective offensive combat power since the start of the invasion and this problem is likely becoming increasingly acute. As well as dealing with severe under-manning, Russian planners face a dilemma between deploying reserves to the Donbas or defending against Ukrainian counterattacks in the southwestern Kherson sector. Russia's stated immediate policy objective is to seize all of Donetsk Oblast. While Russia may still make further territorial gains, their operational tempo and rate of advance is likely to be very slow without a significant operational pause for reorganisation and refit.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported no significant changes in the activities of the armed forces of the republic of belarus in the Volyn and Polissya directions. The rotation of units involved in covering the section of the belarusian-Ukrainian border is coming to an end.

On the Siversky direction, the enemy shelled Mykolaivka in the Chernihiv oblast and Zarutske, Zhuravka, Bilopylla, Iskryskivshchyna, Myropillya, Esman, and Vovkivka in the Sumys oblast from the territory of the russian federation with barrel artillery and rocket salvo systems. In the Kharkiv direction, the enemy continued to attack settlements with artillery fire in the areas to the north, east and south-east of the city of Kharkiv. It made unsuccessful attempts to conduct offensive actions in the directions of the villages of Udy and Husarivka. He launched an airstrike near the Husarivka.

In the Slovyansk direction, the enemy shelled the areas of the settlements of Dibrovne, Novomykolaivka, Velyka Komyshuvakha, Dolyna, Chepil, Semylanne, Hrushuvaha, Adamivka, Barvinkove, Bohorodychne, Arkhanhelivka, and Nova Dmytrivka with barrel, jet artillery, and tanks. The enemy's attempt to conduct combat reconnaissance in the direction of Dmytrivka ended unsuccessfully. The occupiers withdrew with losses. In the Donetsk direction, the enemy is concentrating its main efforts on attempts to advance in the directions of Siversk and Bakhmut.

The enemy carried out artillery fire in the vicinity of Kramatorsk, Raihorodok, Donetsk, Verkhnokamyanske, Spirne, Starodubivka, Siversk, Dronivka, and Ivano-Daryivka. He carried out an airstrike near Verkhnokamyanske.
Ukrainian soldiers inflicted significant losses on the occupiers when they tried to advance in the direction of Hryhorivka, Spirne, and Ivano-Daryivka. The enemy retreated in disorder.

In the direction of Bakhmut, the invaders shelled the areas of the settlements of Bakhmut, Novoluhanske, Pokrovske, Vershyna, Vesela Dolyna, Yakovlivka, Berestov and Zaitseve. Airstrikes were carried out near the Vugleghirskaya TPP, Pokrovsky, Maiorsk, Toretsk, Berestove and Vershyna.

The enemy carried out assaults in the direction of Pokrovske, was partially successful, and was entrenched on the southern outskirts of the settlement. The enemy's attempts to advance in the direction of Berestove, Bilohorivka, Vershyna and the territory of the Vuglehirskaya TPP were unsuccessful.

The enemy did not conduct active operations in the Avdiyivka, Novopavlivla, and Zaporizhzhya directions. Fired tanks, barrel and jet artillery in the areas of Volodymyrivka, Avdiivka, Prechistivka, Novomykhailivka, Pavlivka, Vugledar, Maryinka, Tonenke, Velyka Mykhailivka, Yanvarske, Kamianske, Charivne, Mali Shcherbaky, Novoandriivka and Novopil settlements. It conducted an airstrike near Kamyianka.

The situation in the South Buh direction has not undergone any significant changes. Mutual shelling from barrel and rocket artillery and tanks continues along the entire line of contact.

In the waters of the Black and Azov Seas, the enemy's naval group continues to perform tasks of supporting the actions of ground forces and blocking the northwestern part of the Black Sea.

Three carriers of high-precision weapons are in readiness for missile strikes on objects on the territory of Ukraine. The enemy continues to suffer losses in manpower and equipment. The enemy's ammunition depots are being blown up. An increase in cases of desertion of Russian occupiers who are trying to get to the territory of the Russian Federation in any way is recorded.

Over the past day, the aerospace forces of the Russian Federation have attacked the deployment point of the "Right Sector" ✱ (banned in Russia) in Kamyshevakh, eliminating up to 200 militants. Over 60 nationalists, seven tanks from the 81st brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (APU) were liquidated in the Valley, and an artillery depot was also destroyed.

Under Belenkiy in the Odessa region, ammunition depots for foreign weapons supplied from Europe and the United States were hit.

The Ministry of Defense reports that Kyiv, in order to make up for the losses of the 66th, 72nd, 58th, 10th brigades operating in the Soledar direction, is carrying out forced mobilization of the inhabitants of Bakhmut, Chasov Yar, Soledar, Dzerzhinsk and surrounding villages. Cars are also requisitioned from civilians.

As a result of the counter-battery fight, four Ukrainian platoons of Grad multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), 13 platoons of D-20 howitzers and ten platoons of D-30 howitzers were liquidated over the entire line of contact in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR).

Army aviation and artillery jointly hit seven command posts, five ammunition depots, two fuel depots in the DPR, Zaporozhye and Dnepropetrovsk regions, and also covered 197 enemy troop concentration areas.

Air defense shot down four Ukrainian drones and a Mi-24 helicopter over Pokrovsky in a day. Also, four Tochki-U and five MLRS shells were intercepted in the Kharkiv region.

The situation in the LDNR

During the day, there were no significant changes on the line of contact, local clashes and artillery duels took place. Donbass defenders continue to probe enemy defenses and select targets carefully to avoid civilian casualties.

The army of the Kyiv regime, in turn, does not stop trying to harm civilians. The people's militia of the DPR reported that since the beginning of the current day, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have used over 320 heavy shells to shell 11 settlements of the republic. Five houses were damaged as a result.

In addition, during the day in battles with the nationalists, three fighters of the republic were killed, and seven more were wounded.

Meanwhile, the armed forces of the LPR are preparing to repel the Ukrainian offensive in the Popasna area. As an officer of the People's Militia Andrei Marochko stated , a foreign legion could be used in this action.

Despite the fact that the chances of the Ukrainian Armed Forces advancing are negligible, especially given the lack of success on the battlefield from the very beginning of the special operation of the RF Armed Forces, Kyiv will at least receive footage of the offensive for its media campaign.
