Russo-Ukraine War - 20 July 2022 - Day 147
On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]
The UK Ministry of Defence reported that Russia continues to make minimal gains in its Donbas offensive, with Ukrainian forces holding the line. On 19 July 2022, the authorities in Russian-occupied Kherson reported that the Antonovskiy Bridge over the Dnieper River had been struck by Ukrainian forces. Social media posts showed apparent battle damage to the bridge's roadway. It is highly likely that the bridge remains usable – but it is a key vulnerability for Russian Forces. It is one of only two road crossing points over the Dnieper by which Russia can supply or withdraw its forces in the territory it has occupied west of the river. This area includes the city of Kherson, which is politically and symbolically important for Russia. The lower reaches of the Dnieper present a natural barrier, with the waterway typically around 1000m wide. Control of Dnieper crossings is likely to become a key factor in the outcome of fighting in the region.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported no significant changes in the enemy's activity in the Volyn, Polissya, and Siversky directions. Russian forces shelled the areas of Mykolaivka, Volfyne, Pavlivka and Ulanove settlements in the Sumy oblast with barrel and rocket artillery.
In the Kharkiv direction, shelling was recorded, in particular, near Stary Saltiv, Petrivka, Rusky Tyshki, Pechenihy, Tsyrkuny, Pytomnyk, Dementiyvka, and Korobochyne. Russian forces launched airstrikes near Mospanovove and Rtyshchivka and unsuccessfully tried to advance in the direction of the village of Pytomnyk.
In the Slovyansk direction, Russian forces carried out fire damage from tanks, barrel and rocket artillery in the areas of Dolyna, Bohorodychne, Kostyantynivka, Husarivka, Velyka Komyshuvaha, Pokrovske and other settlements. Ukrainian soldiers again successfully repelled enemy assaults in the Bohorodychne district.
In the Kramatorsk direction, Russian forces shelled the Kramatorsk, Serebryanka, Verkhnokamyanske and Ivano-Daryivka districts with artillery and also delivered missile and air strikes near Kramatorsk and Slovyansk. Meanwhile, Russian assault actions in the districts of Hryhorivka and Spirne ended with losses and retreat.
In the Bakhmut direction, Russian forces were reported to try to create favorable conditions for establishing control over the city of Bakhmut and the territory of the Vuhlehirska TPP through combat operations. They carried out shelling in the areas of the settlements of Berestove, Vesele, Yakovlivka, Soledar, Bakhmutske, Vesela Dolyna, Kodema, Mayorsk, New York and others, as well as airstrikes on Pokrovske. They also conducted assault operations in the Berestove area and on the approaches to the Vuhlegirskaya TPP, hostilities continue.
In the Avdiyivka, Novopavlivka, and Zaporizkzhia directions, Russian forces continued systematic shelling of civilian and military infrastructure in the areas of settlements Novobakhmutivka, Avdiyivka, Nevelske, Krasnohorivka, Volodymyrivka, Pavlivka, Prechistivka, Velyka Novosilka, Zelene Pole, Novoukrainka, Olhivske, Malynivka, Hulyaipole, Preobrazhenka, Zaliznychne , Kamianske. Airstrikes were recorded near Avdiyivka, Kamianske and Novoandriivka. Russian occupiers again failed another combat reconnaissance in the area of Novoselivka Druha, suffered losses and retreated. Russian units advancing in the direction of Mykilske and Novomykhailivka had the same participation.
In the South Buh direction, Russian forces concentrated their main efforts on preventing the advance of Ukrainian troops deep into the temporarily occupied territory. They conducted intensive reconnaissance of the UAV as well as systematic shelling of civilian and military infrastructure in the areas of Osokorivka, Olhyne, Ivanivka, Velyke Artakove, Lozove, Shyroke, Kvitneve, Lyubomyrivka, Berezneguvate, Kotlyareve, Stepova Dolyna, Nova Zorya, Lupareve and a number of others.
Ukrainian forces delivered missile and air strikes near Murakhivka and Novohruhorivlka and inflicted losses on the enemy in all directions where active hostilities continue.
Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that the Russian Federation will help the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, but it will take years to put the region in order. The head of state also announced Kyiv's unwillingness to fulfill the agreements reached during the talks in Istanbul.
"In order to create these conditions (for negotiations), our troops withdrew from the center of Ukraine, from Kyiv. The Kyiv authorities refused to implement these agreements, although they were practically achieved," Vladimir Putin noted.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov , in an interview with RIA Novosti and RT, said that the special operation of the Russian Armed Forces was inevitable. He also added that now the geographical objectives of the campaign have changed, including due to the supply of multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) HIMARS to Kyiv. Now we are talking not only about the DPR and LPR, the minister noted. Also, he added, the United States and Great Britain, pumping up Ukraine with weapons, are trying to push the Russian Federation and Europe.
The Ministry of Defense of Russia in a daily briefing announced that within a day, a missile and artillery warehouse of the 14th mechanized brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Soledar (Donetsk People's Republic, DPR) was hit by high-precision weapons of the Russian Aerospace Forces, and a launcher was destroyed in the Usatovo area (Odessa region) complex "Harpoon" made in the USA.
In addition, sea-based high-precision long-range weapons hit the temporary deployment point of the 35th Marine Brigade in Dachnoye (Odessa region), where reservists for the Armed Forces of Ukraine were trained.
During the counter-battery fight, 5 platoons of Grad multiple launch rocket systems of the 48th and 58th motorized infantry brigades, 6 artillery platoons of D-20 howitzers and 9 artillery platoons of D-30 guns in the DPR were hit during the day.
Aviation, missile forces and artillery hit 7 command posts of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the DPR, Mykolaiv and Kharkiv regions. 2 fuel depots were liquidated in the DPR, 8 warehouses with rocket and artillery weapons and ammunition in the DPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions.
In an air battle, 2 aircraft of the Ukrainian Air Force were shot down: a MiG-29 in the Nikolaev region and a Su-25 in the DPR. During the day, 4 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were shot down by means of air defense (air defense) in the DPR and the Kharkiv region. 9 shells of the Uragan MLRS were intercepted in the Kherson and Kharkov regions.
In the evening report, the People's Militia of the DPR reported that since the beginning of the day, Ukrainian armed formations had fired more than 260 shells and mines on the territory of the republic. The fire was fired in the direction of 13 settlements. As a result of the shelling, three civilians were killed and two people were injured. In addition, as a result of neo-Nazi attacks, 26 residential buildings and four civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged.
The Headquarters of the Territorial Defense of the DPR announced the liberation of the village of Berestovoye near Soledar.
The Ambassador of the Luhansk People's Republic (LPR) to Russia, Rodion Miroshnik , said that residents of Slovyansk noticed Ukrainian militants dressed in Russian uniforms and wearing St. George ribbons on the streets of the city. According to the diplomat, provocations designed to discredit the RF Armed Forces are not ruled out. He also stressed that there are no allied troops in Slavyansk, so it is dangerous to approach the "mummers".
Residents of Kramatorsk, Miroshnik said, passed on information about a large number of foreigners in uniform in the city. It is noted that the "guests" communicate with each other in English, Polish and Spanish.
Elena Shishkina , chairman of the committee on criminal and administrative legislation of the People's Council , told RIA Novosti that the final international tribunal for Ukrainian war criminals would take place only after the liberation of the entire territory of the DPR.
Deputy head of the Ministry of Information of the DPR Daniil Bezsonov said that the Ukrainian side claims that they are allegedly preparing an attack on Donetsk. Meanwhile, he stressed, the Armed Forces of Ukraine do not have the strength and means for this. If the Ukrainian militants begin to accumulate forces for such a throw, the DPR will notice this.
"And we will cover these forces, so this is impossible. The forces that they have dispersed in the Donetsk direction are not enough to gain a foothold at least somewhere, "he concluded.
Andrey Marochko , an officer of the People's Militia of the LPR , said that, according to intelligence, dissatisfaction is growing among the military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine due to the poor level of provision with spare parts for weapons and equipment. The issue is most acute in the Soledar direction. Due to the active use of Soviet-made artillery pieces, their resource in the Armed Forces of Ukraine is practically exhausted, and parts for weapons sent by the West are delivered with serious interruptions.
Marochko also noted that the process of teaching the Ukrainian military to use Western weapons is difficult due to the language barrier - the vast majority of the Armed Forces of Ukraine do not know English and cannot fully interact with foreign instructors.
The government of the LPR decided to establish an embassy in the Russian Federation, the number of employees of the department will be 18 people.
The press service of the government of the republic reported that the State Unitary Enterprise of the Luhansk People's Republic "Lugansk Railway" on Wednesday resumed the movement of passenger trains along the Yasinovataya-Lugansk-Yasinovataya route.
