A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

Former adviser to the US Secretary of Defense, Colonel Douglas McGregor, in an interview for an Australian TV channel, said that Ukraine had lost 70-80% of its personnel army killed and wounded and was trying to compensate for these losses with untrained reservists, which leads to "monstrous" casualties among them. The colonel called Ukraine a failed state and predicted its disappearance.

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with leaders of party factions in the State Duma and gave an assessment of the situation in Ukraine and the international situation. As the head of state noted, Russia has not yet started anything in earnest in Ukraine. "We do not refuse peace negotiations, but those who refuse should know that the further, the more difficult it will be for them to negotiate with us," he said.

“We are told that we started a war in the Donbass. No, it was unleashed by this very collective West, organizing and supporting an unconstitutional armed coup in Ukraine, and then encouraging and justifying genocide against people in the Donbass,” he explained. “Today we hear that they want to defeat us on the battlefield. Well, what can I say? Let them try,” he said.

“But the truth and reality is that the peoples of most countries do not want such a life and future. They really strive not for formal, decorative, but for substantive, real sovereignty. And they are simply tired of kneeling, humiliating themselves in front of those who consider themselves exceptional. Moreover, to the detriment of oneself to serve their interests," the Russian leader stressed.

"The ruling classes of Western countries... realizing that their policy is increasingly divorced from reality, from common sense, from the truth, began to use frankly despotic methods," Putin said. Nevertheless, the destruction of the old world order has already taken place, and attempts to impose a new one are doomed to failure, the president added.

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that on 06 July 2022, heavy shelling continued along the Donetsk front line, but with few advances being made by Russia. Russian units involved in last week’s gains are now likely re-constituting. On 05 July 2022, a law proposed by the Russian government on ‘special economic measures’ passed its first reading in the Duma. The legislation is likely to be adopted and will give the authorities special powers over labour relations; the reactivation of mobilisation facilities; and to release assets from state reserves. The legislation is likely an attempt by the Kremlin to put into place economic measures to support the ‘special military operation’ without a formal declaration of state mobilisation, which remains politically sensitive. It also allows Russia to avoid acknowledging that it is engaged in a war or its failure to overcome Ukraine’s military that was outnumbered and outgunned.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the one hundred and thirty-fourth day of the heroic resistance of the Ukrainian nation to the Russian military invasion continues. No changes in the condition, composition and nature of actions of units of the armed forces of the Republic of Belarus were noted in the Volyn and Poliske directions. There is still a threat of missile and bomb attacks from the territory of this country. In the Siverskyi direction, the Russians, in order to demonstrate their presence, Russians shelled the areas of Vovkivka, Kindrativka, and Myropyllya of the Sumy region with artillery. In addition, they carried out airstrikes near Esmani and Myropyllya.

In the Slobozhansk direction, the Russians continues to concentrate efforts on holding positions and preventing the advancement of units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine deep into the temporarily occupied territory. During the day Russia used tanks, barrel and rocket artillery for shelling settlements of the Kharkiv region along the contact line. Ukraine soldiers nullified all the Russians's attempts to advance in the direction of Sosnivka. The assault was repulsed, and the occupiers retreated to their previously occupied positions.

In the east of Ukraine, the Russians were still trying to establish complete control over the territory of the Luhansk region. In the Slavic direction, the occupiers again unsuccessfully stormed Bogorodichne, trying to capture it completely. Ukraine soldiers harshly suppressed this next attempt. The Russians carried out fire damage with barrel and rocket artillery in the areas of the settlements of Suligivka, Chervone, Nikopol, Novopavlivka, Karnaukhivka, Adamivka, Krasnopillya, Bogorodichne, Mazanivka, Dibrivne and Dolyna. Near the latter, he used attack and army aircraft for strikes.

In the Kramatorsk direction, the Russians made unsuccessful attempts at assaults in the Hryhorivka and Verkhnokamyansk directions. The occupiers shelled the areas of Mayaki, Siversk, Serebryanka, Hryhorivka, Verkhnokamianske, Zolotarivka and Zvanivka settlements with barrel and rocket artillery. A Russians airstrike was recorded in the Serebryanka area. In the direction of Bakhmut, Ukrainian soldiers inflicted losses on the Russians when they tried to improve their tactical position near Vershyn and Berestovo. The Russians retreated in panic. The areas of the settlements of Vyimka, Ivanodar'ivka, Spirne, Berestovka, Bilogorivka, Pokrovske, Yakovlivka, Soledar, Bakhmutske, Klynove, Vershina, Kodema, Mayorsk, and New York were shelled with barrel artillery and rocket salvo systems. Used army aviation near Shumy. It is fixed on the outskirts of the settlement of Spirne.

In the Avdiyiv, Kurakhiv, Novopavliv and Zaporizhzhya directions, mutual shelling from barrel and rocket artillery continued along the contact line. The Russians attacked with attack aircraft near Kamianskyi. The situation in the South Buz direction has not undergone any significant changes. Russians units continue to hold occupied positions and fire at the positions of units of Ukraine troops with available weapons.

The statements of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation about the alleged death of Ukrainian soldiers who were cleaning and installing Ukrainian flags on Zmiiny Island are not true. In the waters of the Black and Azov seas, the Russians kept up to six carriers of high-precision weapons ready for use. The total number of sea-based cruise missiles of the "Caliber" type can be up to 40 units.

The Russians continues to suffer significant losses of personnel, weapons and military equipment on the territory of Ukraine. Thus, according to available information, the command of the Central Military District of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation is forced to withdraw units from the 35th separate motorized rifle brigade. Instead, he is trying to attract unmotivated units of the 74th separate motorized rifle brigade.

Forced mobilization of personnel in the temporarily occupied territory of Luhansk region continues. The mobilized have weak training and unsatisfactory equipment with means of protection. At present, the current shortage of units of the 2nd Army Corps of the 8th Combined Arms Army of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation is about 8,000 people.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation during the morning briefing stated that the aerospace forces, using high-precision weapons, attacked the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in the Soledar direction. The losses of the 24th Ukrainian brigade are about 2.5 thousand people, which is approximately 60% of its personnel. The 79th Airborne Brigade lost over 80% of its strength.

Near Bakhmut, the points of deployment and warehouses of the 14th and 72nd, 10th brigades were hit, as a result of which up to 350 enemy servicemen and 20 pieces of equipment were destroyed. Soldiers of the 80th brigade are deserting en masse. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian command issued an order to reduce the time spent by the wounded in hospitals. In addition, they will be sent to service without a rehabilitation period.

On the night of July 7, Ukrainian soldiers arrived on a motorboat on Zmeiny Island, where they took pictures with a blue and yellow flag. They were hit by an air strike, as a result of which some of the "paratroopers" died, and the survivors urgently retreated by boat.

The high-precision weapons of the Russian Armed Forces destroyed six command posts, three warehouses with weapons and ammunition in a day, and also hit 14 areas where enemy forces were concentrated, including the stationing point for foreign mercenaries in Posad-Pokrovsky and the training base near Ochakovo.

As part of the counter-battery fight in the Donbass, three platoons of Grad multiple rocket launchers (MLRS), four artillery batteries and a cluster of Giacint-B howitzers were destroyed. At the same time, army aviation and artillery covered 142 enemy deployment areas.

Over Nikolaev and Adamovka, Ukrainian MiG-29s and Su-25s were shot down in air battles, and air defense intercepted 17 drones, six Tochka-U missiles and 12 MLRS shells over the liberated territories.

During the day, the Armed Forces of Ukraine launched an artillery strike on Svetlodarsk in the Lugansk People's Republic (LPR), using four Uragan MLRS shells. Damage is specified. At the same time, by 18:00 today, the enemy fired 229 ammunition of various types in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), including the BM-21 Grad MLRS, as well as artillery shells with a caliber of 155, 152 and 122 mm. Information about the consequences of shelling continues to arrive. Today, the punitive nationalist battalion "Kraken" refused to comply with the order to move from Kharkov to the task force "Soledar".
