A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

Conscripts from the self-proclaimed pro-Russian Donbas republics say they are cheated by their commanders and used as cannon fodder at the front. Many soldiers enter the army from round-ups, are sent to fight, even though some of them did not even have weapons in their hands before. Deserters are so desperate that they decide to refuse to obey orders despite severe penalties and accusations of treason against their relatives.

Frontline fighters have no combat experience. "We had an epileptic in our group and an old man in his seventies who terrified everyone with his appearance" recalls one of the army soldiers from Donbas, who managed to survive. Desperate mothers and wives learn the fate of their men through word of mouth. Widows cannot count on the bodies of the fallen to be delivered, they are ignored by the authorities. The Russian Foreign Ministry replied to one of the women that it "does not interfere in the affairs of other sovereign states".

United States President Joe Biden betrayed state interests for the sake of Ukraine, according to former US Congressman Tulsi Gabbard. “Every time this Admin has been asked what the goal of our war with Russia is, using Ukrainians as our proxy, (i.e. how will we know when victory is achieved?) they’ve dodged the question by declaring the president of Ukraine will make that decision & the U.S. will follow... If handing over American sovereignty to the leader of another country isn’t treason, what is?” – wrote the politician on Twitter.

The Ukrainian army rejected claims that Moscow-backed separatists and Russian forces had surrounded the key eastern city of Lysychansk, but said heavy fighting was ongoing on its edges. “Fighting rages around Lysychansk. [But] luckily the city has not been encircled and is under control of the Ukrainian army,” Ruslan Muzytchuk, a spokesman for the Ukrainian National Guard, said on Ukrainian television after a separatist spokesman made the allegations earlier in the day. Capturing the city would allow the Russians to push deeper into the wider eastern region of the Donbas, which has become the focus of their offensive since failing to capture Kyiv after launching their military operation in Ukraine in late February.

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that Russian forces continue to achieve minor advances around Lysychansk, with air and artillery strikes continuing in the district. Ukrainian forces probably continue to block Russian forces in the south-eastern outskirts of Lysychansk. Russia continues to employ air-launched anti-ship missiles in a secondary land attack role, likely because of dwindling stockpiles of more accurate modern weapons. Analysis of CCTV footage shows the missile that impacted the Kremenchuk shopping centre on 27 June 2022 was highly likely a Kh-32. This is an upgraded version of the Soviet era Kh-22 KITCHEN. Although the Kh-32 has several performance improvements over the Kh-22, it is still not optimised to accurately strike ground targets, especially in an urban environment. This greatly increases the likelihood of collateral damage when targeting built up areas. Further strikes on 30 June 2022 in Odesa Oblast likely involved Kh-22 KITCHEN missiles. These weapons are even less accurate and unsuitable for precision strikes and have almost certainly repeatedly caused civilian casualties in recent weeks.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that in the Volyn and Poliske directions, the units of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus continue to perform the task of covering the Belarusian-Ukrainian border in the border areas of the Brest and Gomel regions on a rotational basis. Training on guiding pontoon crossings is being conducted. There were no signs of the formation of Russian offensive groups. There are no significant changes in the Seversky direction. The Russian fired at the positions of the Defense Forces in the areas of Studenok, Tovstodubov, Nova Sloboda and Bilopillya.

In the Kharkiv direction, the Russian were defending the previously occupied positions. He carried out shelling from tanks, mortars, tube and rocket artillery in the areas of the settlements of Zolochiv, Khrestishche, Molodova, Korobochkine, Velyka Babka, Malynivka, Ivanivka, Cherkaska Lozova, Slatine and Chepil. He led an assault in the area of Dementiyivka settlement, was unsuccessful, withdrew. He carried out an airstrike near Verkhniy Saltov and Prudyanka. Conducted aerial reconnaissance of the "Orlan-10" UAV.

In the Slavic direction, the Russians continued to defend. He shelled the Dolyna, Kurulka, Adamivka and Barvinkovo districts with artillery. Ukrainian soldiers once again successfully repulsed the assault in the area of the settlement of Bogorodichne. In the Donetsk direction, the Russian shelled civilian infrastructure near Ivano-Daryivka and Zolotarivka. As a result of the hostilities, it was established in the area of Verkhnokamyanka. In the Kramatorsk direction, Russian shelling was recorded near Bilogorivka.

In the Bakhmut direction, the occupiers shelled Ukrainian positions with mortars, tube and rocket artillery in the areas of Kodem and Berestovo. Near the latter, reconnaissance was carried out by combat. Ukrainian soldiers resolutely fought back and forced the Russian to retreat. On the Avdiivka, Kurakhivka, Novopavlivka, and Zaporizka directions, the Russian fired artillery of various calibers on the districts of Avdiivka, Opytny, Netaylovy, Pavlivka, Orikhov, Malynyvka, Novosilka, and Novoandriivka. He carried out airstrikes near Pavlivka.

Ukrainian defenders stopped the offensive actions of the Russian in the area of the settlement of Novomykhailivka and pushed them back. In the South Bug direction, the occupiers continue systematic shelling of civilian and military infrastructure with barrel and rocket artillery. Aerial reconnaissance of the BpLA is conducted. As a result of the actions of the Ukrainian soldiers, the Russian left the settlement of Ivanivka.

Ukrainian aviation struck a stronghold of the Russian army near Blagodatny, the operational command "South" reported. "The enemy's power has been reduced by 1 TorM1 anti-aircraft missile system, 2 infantry fighting vehicles and a dozen occupants, the rest of the results are still being investigated," the report said.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported on the destruction of the temporary accommodation center for the 1st Battalion of the 30th Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) near Bakhmut (former Artemovsk), as a result of which up to 120 servicemen were killed and 15 pieces of equipment were destroyed. During the day, three battalions of the 10th mountain assault and 72nd mechanized Ukrainian brigades lost over 50% of their personnel in the areas of Zolotarevka and Verkhnekamenka.

Russian aviation hit the temporary storage base for weapons and military equipment of the 10th mountain assault brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Kharkov, eliminating 10 pieces of equipment and up to 30 Ukrainian servicemen. Also, five command posts and three ammunition depots were destroyed on the territory of Donbass, Mykolaiv and Zaporozhye regions. Four platoons of Ukrainian rocket artillery were suppressed near Novolugansky, Zhelanny, Berdychi and Vozdvizhenka. With the assistance of artillery, 39 command posts of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, 2 ammunition depots near the city of Nikolaev, as well as manpower and military equipment in 302 districts were hit.

A MiG-29 of the Ukrainian Air Force was shot down over the village of Yavkino. Also, 19 drones were eliminated.

Today, the village of Klinovoye was liberated, 9 kilometers southeast of Bakhmut (former Artemovsk). The road to the strategic city is open. Against this background, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are rapidly preparing for defense there: trenches and anti-tank ditches are being dug, firing and observation points are being equipped in residential premises. Meanwhile, the People's Militia of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) reported Ukrainian artillery strikes on nine settlements in the republic, using over 100 heavy shells and mines. Three houses and two infrastructure facilities were damaged. Enemy artillery batteries were suppressed by return fire. Also today, five enemy ammunition depots were liquidated in the areas of Avdiivka, Opytny and Maryinka. In the performance of military duty, five defenders of the republic were killed, eight more were injured.

Meanwhile, the People's Militia of the Luhansk People's Republic (LPR) announces the complete encirclement of Lisichansk. All roads out of the city are controlled by allied forces, and the city itself is currently being cleared. In the afternoon, a video from the liberated city center appeared on the Web.

Units of the Russian Armed Forces have taken control of the city of Lisichansk in the Lugansk People's Republic, said the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov . There are no losses among the Russian troops, the politician noted. “The commander of the special police regiment named after A. Kadyrov of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Chechen Republic, Hero of Russia Zamid Chalaev, together with the sixth Cossack regiment, entered Lisichansk from the side of the Popasnensky direction, met with the forces of the Akhmat special forces and the second corps of the LNR people’s militia and took control of the city,” Kadyrov wrote in his Telegram channel.

According to the head of Chechnya, the Russian military confidently and quickly stormed the city without encountering much resistance from the Armed Forces of Ukraine. At the same time, the politician noted, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, leaving the city, destroyed infrastructure facilities. So, they attacked the Lisichansk administration building with a Tochka-U missile, hoping that Russian troops would be there. “This is the whole essence of the tactics of the Nazi gangs. Leave behind as much destruction as possible, deprive cities and towns without infrastructure, and then blame Russia,” Kadyrov said.

A “stormy romance” is nearing completion between Ukraine and Europe. This was announced by Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev on the Telegram channel. “ It looks like the stormy romance between Europeans and Ukrainians is coming to an end ,” he said. “ They (citizens of Ukraine) are no longer wanted, they are tired of them .” According to him, the inhabitants of Poland have already remembered their frenzied nationalism, and “similar processes” are also going on in other European countries. “ There is only one step from Ukrainophilia to Ukrainophobia,” Medvedev added. “ After all, fading feelings cannot be ignited again by any promises .”

Alexander Lukashenko accused the United States of provocation, which is to inspire Poland and Lithuania to such actions. The self-proclaimed president threatened that in the event of an attack on Belarus, the army has an order to attack the decision-making centers of the aggressor's state. "We know exactly what is happening on the territory of Belarus and we are ready for any scenarios" said Mykhailo Podolak, advisor to the president of Ukraine.

"We were provoked. I have to tell you: three days ago, maybe a little more, an attempt was made to strike military facilities in Belarus from the territory of Ukraine. But thank God, the Pancyr anti-aircraft systems managed to intercept all the missiles launched by the Ukrainian army,"" said Alexander Lukashenko, quoted by the Belt Agency.

Earlier, he argued that Belarus is not trying to fight in Ukraine. In his opinion, Ukraine and Western countries themselves want it. "Belarus sees and understands the provocations of the West, but does not give in to them. Bad peace is better than good war," said Lukashenko. He accused the United States of allegedly provoking Belarus, which is supposed to inspire Poland and Lithuania to such actions.

The recently announced military aid from France will arrive in Ukraine in the coming weeks, said the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Ukraine to France Vadym Omelchenko. "France helped from the beginning, but the only condition was not to disclose it. This is due to security considerations, security of logistics. Help is coming in the coming weeks. Some of what was declared is already on the territory of Ukraine," the ambassador said on the air of the national television.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russia lost about 35,870 of its troops, 1,582 tanks, 3,737 armored fighting vehicles, 800 artillery systems, 246 anti-aircraft missiles and 105 anti-aircraft vehicles in the full-scale war against Ukraine. On June 9, The Guardian , citing a source in high-ranking circles, reported that the Russian army could have lost about 20,000 soldiers since the beginning of the large-scale invasion of Ukraine . Moscow has not reported its losses in the war against Ukraine recently. On March 25, only for the second time since the beginning of the large-scale invasion, the Russian side published data on the losses of Russian troops, according to which 1,351 Russian servicemen died, and another 3,825 were wounded.
