Russo-Ukraine War - 09 July 2022 - Day 136
On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]
The UK Ministry of Defence reported that Russia is moving reserve forces from across the country and assembling them near Ukraine for future offensive operations. A large proportion of the new infantry units are probably deploying with MT-LB armoured vehicles taken from long-term storage as their primary transport. While MT-LBs have previously been in service in support roles on both sides, Russia has long considered them unsuitable for most front-line infantry transport roles. It was originally designed in the 1950s as a tractor to pull artillery, has very limited armour, and only mounts a machine gun for protection. In contrast, most of Russia’s first echelon assault units were equipped with BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles in February, featuring armour up to 33mm thick and mounting a powerful 30mm autocannon and an anti-tank missile launcher. Despite President Putin’s claim on 07 July 2022 that the Russian military has ‘not even started’ its efforts in Ukraine, many of its reinforcements are ad hoc groupings, deploying with obsolete or inappropriate equipment.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on he one hundred and thirty-sixth day of the heroic resistance of the Ukrainian nation to the Russian military invasion. There were no significant changes on the Volyn and Polissky directions. In the Slovyansk direction, the occupiers, using artillery, are trying to create favorable conditions for further advancement in the direction of Izyum - Slovyansk. Russian army aircraft struck in the Chepil and Bogorodichne areas. Ukrainian defenders successfully repelled all Russians assault attempts in the directions of Dovgenke - Krasnopill, Pasik - Dolyna. The Russians left. Carried out remote demining of a section of the highway near Velika Komyshuvakha. Airstrikes were recorded in Avdiivka and Novoandriivka districts. With offensive actions, the Russians tried to improve the tactical position in the direction of Yasinuvat - Avdiyivka. He has no success, he left with losses. The Russians's attempt to advance in the Maryinka area was also unsuccessful. In the South Buz direction, the occupiers continue to focus their efforts on the defense of the occupied positions and restraining the advancement of the units of the Defense Forces deep into the temporarily occupied territory with available fire means.
Russian defense ministry spokesperson Lieutenant-General Igor Konashenkov said "a high-precision weapon" fired by Russia's forces had destroyed a hangar in Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk region. He said the hanger housed "American 155-mm M777 howitzers and up to 30 Ukrainian militants shelling residential areas of Donetsk." Engineering and sapper units of the People's Militia of the LPR continue to work on demining the territories of the republic. Over the previous day, they cleared 5 hectares of land in the areas of the settlements of Maloryazantsevo and Novodruzhesk.
Lugansk was visited by a delegation from the Liberal Democratic Party. Party members held a meeting with deputies of the People's Council of the LPR, and also delivered humanitarian cargo to the republic, which included medical equipment, medicines and office equipment. The head of the LPR , Leonid Pasechnik , handed over to the delegation an honorary sign of the republic, posthumously awarded to the founder of the party, Vladimir Zhirinovsky , for supporting the citizens of Donbass. The LDPR delegation, in turn, stated that it would support youth programs and provide assistance to affected children in the LPR.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed Andriy Melnyk , the ambassador to Germany, who is known for his harsh criticism of the German authorities. Ambassadors to Hungary, Norway, the Czech Republic and India have also been removed from their posts.
Andriy Melnyk made a name for himself as ambassador to Germany after his appointment in 2014, garnering international attention, and scorn, from ordinary Germans and foreigners alike over his 'unconventional' approach to his job. Earlier this year, officials told Suddeutsche Zeitung that the envoy conducted himself in such an undiplomatic manner, and was such a "pain in the a**" to work with that senior government officials went out of their way to avoid meeting him. Melnyk spent much of his time in the country instructing German officials and lawmakers on proper policy toward Russia, lobbied Berlin for more and more weapons, raised eyebrows by visiting the grave of notorious WWII-era Nazi collaborator Stepan Bandera, and sparked alarm after warning that Kiev may have to build a nuclear arsenal if it wasn't allowed to join NATO.
