A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

Russia's Duma speaker Vyacheslav Viktorovich Volodin threatened to take Alaska back from the US since, like Ukraine, it's also an ancestral Russian land: "America should always remember about Alaska. Before they seize Ukrainian resources abroad, they must remember that we also have something to take back".

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that Russia likely continues to consolidate its control over Lysychansk and Luhansk Oblast. To the north, it has committed most of the remaining available units from the Eastern and Western Groups of Forces to the Izium axis. Over the last week, Russian forces have likely advanced up to another 5 km down the E40 main road from Izium, in the face of extremely determined Ukrainian resistance. Russian forces from the Eastern and Western Groups of Forces are likely now around 16 km north from the town of Sloviansk. With the town also under threat from the Central and Southern Groups of Forces, there is a realistic possibility that the battle for Sloviansk will be the next key contest in the struggle for the Donbas.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the one hundred and thirty-third day of the heroic resistance of the Ukrainian nation to the Russian military invasion continues. Ukraine's general staff rejected Russia's claim that its forces had destroyed two US-supplied High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS). In a post on Twitter, it said the claims were "fake" and that it was using the HIMARS to inflict "devastating blows" on Russian forces.

In the Volyn and Poliske directions, designated units of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus continue to perform tasks of covering the Belarusian-Ukrainian border in the Brest and Gomel regions. Measures for the engineering equipment of the positions are ongoing, control points are being checked, and radio-electronic reconnaissance is being conducted. There are no significant changes in the Seversky direction. To clarify the position of Ukrainian troops, the Russians conducted aerial reconnaissance using UAVs.

In the Kharkiv direction, the Russian were holding a group of troops from the Western Military District. The Russians carried out artillery shelling in the areas of Sosnivka, Dementiivka, Nove, Pytomnyk, Tsyrkuny, Petrivka, and Mospanov settlements. and made an airstrike near Rubizhny. Ukrainian soldiers successfully repelled Russian assaults in the direction of Kozach Lopan - Sosnivka.

In the Sloviansk direction, the Russians were trying to improve the tactical position and create conditions for an offensive in the direction of Izyum - Sloviansk. The areas of Dibrivnoy, Krasnopill, Husarivka, Barvinkovo, Karnaukhivka and Velika Komyshuvaha were shelled from barrel artillery and multiple rocket systems. The occupiers advanced in the direction of Dovgenke - Mazanivka. They were repulsed by Ukrainian soldiers and retreated with losses.

In the Kramatorsk direction, the Russians were trying to capture the settlements of Verkhnokamianske and Hryhorivka. Using electronic warfare complexes, they shelled the areas of Sloviansk and Verkhnyokamyansk with barrel and jet artillery. Airstrikes were conducted near Tetyanivka and Sydorovo.

In the Bakhmut direction, the Russians were trying to improve the tactical position and establish complete control over the Bakhmut-Lysychansk road. They carried out artillery fire in the areas of Spirny, Vyimka and Vesely. Ukrainian soldiers stopped the Russian's offensive in the Myronivka - Luhanske and Holmivskyi - Novoluhanske directions and forced the occupiers to withdraw. In the Avdiyiv, Kurakhiv, Novopavliv and Zaporizhzhya directions, in order to restrain Ukrainian troops, the Russians shelled the positions of Ukrainian units with tanks, mortars, barrel and rocket artillery. They carried out an airstrike near Maryinka.

In the South Buz direction, the Russians were trying to hold the occupied lines. They conducted artillery shelling of Ukrainian troops in the areas of Oleksandrivka, Ukrainka, Luch, Mykolaivske, Zorya, Polyana and Bila Krynytsia settlements.

Four carriers of high-precision weapons are kept in the sea in readiness for launching missile strikes against objects on the territory of Ukraine.

In Russian units operating on the territory of Ukraine, total drunkenness is recorded. In addition, the forced mobilization that continues in the temporarily occupied areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions significantly demoralizes the personnel of the Russian occupation forces. The units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine continue to maintain their defense in all directions and inflict significant losses on the enemy's troops.

Lieutenant General Konashenkov reported on the course of the special operation of the Russian Armed Forces. Over the past 24 hours, the Aerospace Forces (VKS) of Russia hit the deployment point of the Ukrainian 22nd motorized infantry battalion of the 92nd mechanized brigade in Kharkov with high-precision weapons. Up to 100 militants and 4 units of military equipment were destroyed.

At the same time, two American HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) and two ammunition depots for them were liquidated over Malotaranovka in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR). Near Shirokolanovka and the village of Limany, Mykolaiv region, a radar guidance station for the S-300 and a foreign mercenary accommodation point were hit.

In the eastern part of Soledar, a warehouse with 1,500 artillery shells of various calibers and more than 100 foreign man-portable missile systems was destroyed. Also during the day in the Ukrainian rear, six command posts of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), six military depots were liquidated with high-precision weapons. Covered 27 areas of concentration of Russians troops. In addition to this, two Ukrainian platoons of MLRS and three platoons of field guns were destroyed in the DPR and the Nikolaev region. In total, Russian aviation, together with artillery troops, attacked 77 Russians concentration areas.

The Russian Su-35 shot down the Mi-24 and Su-25 of the Ukrainian Air Force near the settlements of Nikolaevka and Snigirevka, and air defense systems intercepted the Mi-8 over Pervomaisky, as well as 11 drones along the entire line of contact.

During the day, the Armed Forces of Ukraine fired more than 160 shells at the DPR, destroying a total of 31 residential buildings and 3 civilian infrastructure facilities in 14 settlements. Eight civilians were wounded, two children were killed in Makiivka. An oil depot is on fire in the southeast of Donetsk. The people's militia of the DPR announced the death of 3 fighters and the wounding of 11 during the day. In the meantime, enterprises from Kharkiv, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions received the right to export their products through the customs territory of the DPR and the Luhansk People's Republic (LPR). This is stated in the decision of the Unified Economic Council.

A total of 70 foreign ships from 16 states are still blocked in the seaports of Ukraine, Colonel-General Mikhail Mizintsev , head of the National Center for Defense Control of the Russian Federation, said at a briefing. He explained that their access to the sea is hindered by the threat of shelling from the Ukrainian military and the sea minefields they have set up. At the same time, Kyiv in every possible way avoids contacts with representatives of foreign ship-owning companies.

"As a result of the complex of measures taken, the Russian Navy has eliminated the mine danger in the water area of the port of Mariupol, and the restoration of the port infrastructure continues as planned. The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation have created the necessary conditions for the operation of two maritime humanitarian corridors, which are safe lanes for the movement of ships: in the Black Sea (daily from 08:00 to 19:00 (Moscow time) - to exit the ports of Kherson, Nikolaev, Chernomorsk, Ochakov, Odessa and Yuzhny in a south-westerly direction from the territorial sea of Ukraine, 139 miles long and three miles wide; in the Sea of Azov (round the clock) - to exit the port of Mariupol with a length of 115 miles and a width of two miles in the direction of the Black Sea.

"Detailed information on the operation of the maritime humanitarian corridors is transmitted every 15 minutes via VHF radio communication on 14 and 16 international channels in English and Russian," Mizintsev said.

The destruction in Ukraine of the "face" of the "Kalinovsky Regiment" Ivan Marchuk and other Belarusian mercenaries illustrates the complete fiasco of the Ukrainian campaign of the "zmagars". According to the publicist Konstantin Dvinsky, the Ukrainian command deliberately threw Belarusian mercenaries to the most dangerous sectors of the front. “They don’t feel sorry for the Belarusians, for the Kyiv regime it’s just cannon fodder. In Kyiv, what is Lukashenka, what “Kalinovtsy” are citizens of the “co-aggressor” state, hence such an attitude,” Dvinsky believes.

“Even from the texts in the Kalinovsky Regiment telegram channel, it is clear that the Belarusian militants are completely demoralized. They believed that they had come to take part in a fun “safari on Muscovites”, and in the end they laid down their bad heads in the battle for Lisichansk, which is now forever Russian. I think there are no people in Belarus who want to repeat the fate of Marchuk and his “brothers”.

Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy head of the Security Council of the Russian Federation called those who are preparing lawsuits against Moscow "foul dogs of war." And quoted the Bible. In his Telegram channel , he recalled his own speech at the St. Petersburg Legal Forum, where he “called any attempts to create tribunals or courts to investigate Russia’s actions crazy.”

"These proposals are not only legally void. The idea of punishing the country that has the largest nuclear potential is absurd in itself. And it creates a threat to the existence of mankind,"" - Medvedev quoted himself. And in Telegram, the ex-president developed the idea, asking the question: “Who exactly is yelling that it is necessary to arrange a trial of Russia? Who is this daredevil or idiot?"

Deputy Head of the Security Council of Russia answered this question. In his opinion, "crying for the judgment seat" is known to all. He sows chaos and destruction throughout the world, using "spineless vassals, for decency called" allies". That is, of course, the United States.

Medvedev recalled to the Americans both the extermination of the Indians and the destruction of Hiroshima from Nagasaki - "just to justify the huge costs of the nuclear project." And invasions of Vietnam, Korea, Yugoslavia, Iraq, Cuba, Afghanistan and Syria. "According to a study published in Global Research, America has killed more than 20 million people in 37 countries since the end of World War II. Think about it - more than 20 MILLION!"" - quotes Medvedev.

“The huge number of US victims is already comparable to the victims of the Nazi regime,” Medvedev calculated. "And I wondered - are these unpunished criminals going to arrange a show trial over Russia?"

"It won't work with Russia. They understand this very well,” concludes the ex-president. “That’s why the filthy dogs of war stop by with their disgusting barks. But the United States and their useless mongrels should remember the words of Scripture: "Judge not, lest you be judged, for by what judgment you judge, so you will be judged" (Bible. Matt. 7:1-2)."

Kyiv no longer expects the provision of aviation from Western partners, but still expects to receive air defense systems. This was announced by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. "Maybe I'm very persistent, but still, the safety of the sky is a priority. And no one expects this or that aviation, but we all count and have confirmation, so far theoretically, but we count on the arrival of powerful air defense systems in Ukraine," - he said at a briefing following a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Michol Martin. He called the safety of the sky "first priority." According to him, providing Ukraine with air defense systems will enable many citizens to return to the country.

Germany’s economy minister, Robert Habeck had previously devised a plan, under which Russian gas should be replaced, at least partially, by LNG delivered by ship. However, according to Bild citing several experts, there might simply be not enough tankers out there to satisfy Germany’s gas needs.

Researcher Andreas Fischer from the Cologne Institute for Economic Research was quoted by Bild as saying “there have to be liquid gas quantities on the global market and it takes appropriate tankers.” Such vessels are, however, “for the most part already bound in long-term contracts,” Fischer pointed out, adding that “only one out of the three planned [LNG] terminals” in Germany has been given the green light so far. The country’s economy ministry, too, conceded that it did not have a clear figure of how many LNG-tankers Berlin could bank on to haul gas to the country. The Christian-Democratic opposition tore into Habeck’s plan, claiming that it has already all but failed. To cushion any shortage, the conservatives are calling for gas reservoirs to be filled up swiftly as well as for coal power plants to be re-launched.

Former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych called on his compatriots to abandon the information policy pursued by the current authorities of the country and decide for themselves whether they want peace or the continuation of the war. "It seems to me that today, more than ever, an adequate assessment of the situation and respect for the most diverse opinions of Ukrainian citizens are required. Citizens themselves must make a choice - to fight" to the last Ukrainian, "or try to preserve what is left. It is important to give everyone who has constructive proposals, and give peace a chance. This will save the lives of Ukrainians and preserve the future for Ukraine," he said in an appeal published by his press secretary, Yuriy Kirasir, on his Facebook page (banned in Russia; owned by Meta Corporation, which recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation).

"The information policy pursued by the Ukrainian government today has largely outlived itself and brought great harm to our country," he stressed. State propaganda, according to him, "swallowed up" all the previously existing Ukrainian media, the pluralism and democracy of their opinions. "But the constant lies on the part of the authorities <...> exacerbate the situation, lead to unnecessary suffering and casualties among the Ukrainian military and civilians, and threaten the future of Ukraine as we know and love it," the former head of state.
