A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.
On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]
The UK Ministry of Defence reported that despite its liberation by Ukrainian forces on 11 November 2022, Kherson city in southern Ukraine continues to suffer daily bombardment by Russian artillery. On 24 November 2022 alone, 10 people were killed. On 27 November 2022, a recent high of 54 shelling incidents were reported in the area.
The city is vulnerable because it remains in range of most of Russia's artillery systems, now firing from the east bank of the Dnipro River, from the rear of newly consolidated defensive lines.
Much of the damage is likely being inflicted in Kherson by Russia's use of multiple rocket launchers, principally BM-21 Grad systems.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russian forces launched about 10 MLRS attacks on the positions of Ukrainian troops and civilian objects. There is still a threat of Russia launching missile strikes against critical infrastructure facilities deep within the territory of Ukraine. In particular, Russia keeps the aviation group and cruise missile carrier ships in readiness.
In the Volyn, Polissya, and Siverskyi directions, the situation has not changed significantly, and no signs of the formation of Russian offensive groups have been detected.
In the Slobozhanskyi direction, the Russian occupiers fired mortars and rocket artillery at the areas of Kozacha Lopan, Strilecha, Ohirtseve, Budarka and Chuhunivka settlements of the Kharkiv oblast.
In the Kupyansk direction, Russia is defending previously occupied lines. Fired mortars, barrel and rocket artillery in the areas of the settlements of Kupyansk, Tabaivka, Krokhmalne and Berestove in Kharkiv oblast.
In the Lyman direction, Russia is concentrating on conducting offensive operations. Shelling from the entire range of artillery was recorded near Makiivka and Nevske in the Luhansk oblast and Yampolivka and Torske in Donetsk oblast.
In the Bakhmut and Avdiivka directions, Russia continues to attempt offensive actions. Fired tanks, mortars, barrel and jet artillery in the areas of the settlements of Spirne, Yakovlivka, Bakhmutske, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, Vodyane, Pervomaiske, Krasnohorivka, Maryinka and Novomykhailivka of the Donetsk oblast.
In the direction of Novopavlivka, Russian forces fired artillery at the positions of the Defense Forces and the areas of the settlements of Vuhledar and Neskuchne in Donetsk oblast.
In the Zaporizhzhia direction, the Russian occupiers are defending themselves. Areas of the settlements of Vremivka, Novosilka, Novopil, Chervone, Zaliznychne, Dorozhnyanka and Kamianske of Zaporizhzhia oblast were damaged by fire.
In the Kryvyi Rih and Kherson directions, Russia is defending positions in temporarily occupied territories. Artillery shelling of settlements on the right bank of the Dnipro River, including the city of Kherson, does not stop.
According to the available information, starting today, the Russian occupiers have forbidden entry to the territory of the Zaporizhzhia NPP to plant workers who refused to sign contracts with rosatom.
Russian invaders continue to die ingloriously in Ukraine. For example, one of the units of the Russian occupation forces in the Luhansk oblast lost up to 70% of its personnel last week. In the area of the settlement of Babyne, Kherson oblast, the damage to the Russian forces' command post was confirmed, up to 5 units of military equipment were destroyed, information about the dead and wounded servicemen is being clarified.
Near the settlement of Starobohdanivka, Zaporizhzhia region, the Defense Forces damaged a railway bridge, which was used by the Russian occupiers to deliver weapons and military equipment.
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reports on the strike on the Musiyevka railway station in the Dnipropetrovsk region at the time of loading units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (APU). As a result, 8 armored vehicles, 5 vehicles and over 100 servicemen were liquidated.
Artillery and aviation, meanwhile, hit 8 enemy command posts, 2 ammunition depots, 57 artillery units and 124 areas of accumulation of manpower and equipment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
At the same time, seven drones and two HARM anti-radar missiles were shot down by air defense means.
Also today in Melitopol, Zaporozhye region, three Ukrainians were detained who were preparing terrorist attacks in crowded places.
The situation in Donbass
The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation carried out offensive operations in the areas of Stelmakhovka and fired at military targets in Berestovoye, Krakhmalnoye, Tabaevka, and Kupyansk. There were also attacks on Belogorovka and Verkhnekamenskoye in the Soledar area.
As a result of the offensive of the Wagner PMC fighters, the settlements of Ozaryanovka, Zelenopolye and Andreevka were liberated south of Bakhmut. Fights are underway for Kurdyumovka - it is in a partial environment. Thus, coverage of the key node of Ukrainian defense in the region continues.
In Bakhmut itself, meanwhile, the Armed Forces of Ukraine use the technique for digging trenches, which are used not only for defense, but also for covert rotation. Valuable items that are mined are found in the vicinity. The losses of the enemy are constantly replenished at the expense of newcomers, and in fact the revived battalions are again sent into battle.
