A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that, in the last three days, pro-Russian forces have made tactical advances towards the centre of the town of Bakhmut in Donetsk Oblast. Elements of 2nd Army Corps, the pro-Russia militia of the Luhansk region, likely advanced into the villages of Opytine and Ivangrad to the south of the town. There have been few, if any, other settlements seized by regular Russian or separatist forces since early July. However, forces led by the private military company Wagner Group have achieved some localised gains in the Donbas: Wagner likely remains heavily involved in the Bakhmut fighting.

Russia likely views seizing Bakhmut as a preliminary to advancing on the Kramatorsk-Sloviansk urban area which is the most significant population centre of Donetsk Oblast held by Ukraine. Russia continues to prosecute offensive operations in central Donbas and is, very slowly, making progress. However, its overall operational design is undermined by the Ukrainian pressure against its northern and southern flanks, and by severe shortages of munitions and manpower.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russia continues to focus its efforts on attempts to implement its plans to enter the administrative border of Donetsk oblast, as well as to maintain the captured districts of Kharkiv, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv and Kherson oblast. Russian forces do not stop striking the critical infrastructure and civilian facilities of Ukraine. During the current day, the infrastructure and peaceful citizens of Kostyantynivka, Chumaky, Lebedynske, Zaporizhzhia, Davydiv Brid, Myrne and Ochakiv settlements were affected.

Russian forces used cruise, aviation, anti-aircraft guided missiles and strike unmanned aerial vehicles of Iranian production. In general, during the current day, the Russian occupiers launched three rocket and ten air strikes, and fired up to ten MLRS strikes. The situation in the Volyn and Polissya directions has not changed significantly.

The leadership of the Republic of Belarus continues to provide assistance to the russian federation for carrying out military aggression on the territory of Ukraine. Thus, according to available information, another echelon with weapons, military equipment and ammunition arrived from Gomel to the temporarily occupied territory of the Republic of Crimea.

The enemy also shelled:

    in the Siverskyi direction - from mortars and barrel artillery, in the areas of Ukrainske and Atynske settlements of the Sumy oblast;
    in the Slobozhansk direction - from mortars, barrel and jet artillery, in the areas of the settlements of Strilecha, Krasne, Ohirtseve, Vovchansk, Zelene, Starytsa, Dvorichna and Hryanikyvka;
    in the Kramatorsk direction - from artillery of various types, in the areas of the settlements of Pershotravneve, Nadiya, Novoyehorivka, Olhivka, Hrekivka, Yampolivka, Terny, Zarichne, Torske;
    in the Bakhmut direction - from tanks, mortars, barrel and rocket artillery in the areas of more than fifteen settlements along the entire line of contact. In particular, Siversk, Bilohorivka, Hryhorivka, Soledar, Bakhmutske, Bakhmut, Kostyantynivka, Opytne, Ivanhrad;
    in the Avdiivka region - from tanks and artillery of various calibers, in the areas of Berdychi, Avdiivka, Pervomaiske, Vodyane, Opytne, Nevelske and Maryinka settlements.

In the Novopavlivskyi and Zaporizhzhia directions, Russian forces did not conduct offensive actions and continues to set up positions for defense. Fired mortars, barrel and rocket artillery on more than twenty districts of populated areas. Among them are Novosilka, Vremivka, Novopil, Neskuchne, Zolota Nyva, Vuhledar, Kamianske and Bilohirya. More than thirty settlements along the contact line were hit by fire in the South Buh region.

In the temporarily occupied city of Kherson, the Russian occupiers seized 13 out of 15 barge-type watercraft for transporting personnel and equipment across the Dnipro River from the local river port.

In the temporarily occupied territory of the Ukrainian Crimea, the occupying authorities issued an order specifying the procedure for evacuating museums. In particular, internal (within the occupied region) and external (to the territory of the Russian Federation) evacuation plans have been approved for the museums of the temporarily occupied region. Exhibits with the greatest material value are subject to priority evacuation.

According to detailed information, the destruction of a significant number of Russian personnel in the previous days has been confirmed. Thus, as a result of the effective actions of the Ukrainian Defence Forces in the areas of the settlements of Khlibodarivka of the Donetsk oblast, Tokmak of the Zaporizhia oblast, and Tokarivka of the Kherson oblast, Russian forces lost up to 150 people dead and about 100 wounded. Three S-300 complexes were also destroyed and up to 10 units of other weapons and military equipment.

According to preliminary information, in the area of the railway station in the city of Antratsyt, Luhansk oblast, Ukrainian soldiers destroyed a significant part of the enemy's weapons and military equipment transported by rail. The number and nature of injuries are being clarified. During the current day, the aviation of the Ukrainian Defence Forces made thirteen strikes. It has been confirmed that twelve areas of concentration of weapons and military equipment, as well as one anti-aircraft missile system of the enemy, have been destroyed. Missile troops and artillery hit three control points, eight areas of concentration of manpower, weapons and military equipment, and three ammunition warehouses.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported that over the past 24 hours, high-precision weapons hit a large warehouse with foreign weapons in Brody, as well as energy and military facilities in the Kyiv and Kharkov regions.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) carried out a number of unsuccessful attacks in the Kupyansk and Nikolaev-Krivoy Rog directions, losing more than 160 people, 3 tanks, 13 armored cars and 11 pickup trucks. In addition, the RF Armed Forces attacked the location of foreign mercenaries and the 59th brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, destroying more than 170 militants and 13 pieces of equipment.

Also hit were 2 enemy command posts, 63 artillery units, 156 areas of accumulation of units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, 6 ammunition depots. A Su-24 of the Ukrainian Air Force was shot down over Bereznegovaty.

Air defense systems intercepted 15 drones and 14 rockets over the liberated territories.

Today, the Armed Forces of Ukraine shelled Belgorod, the air defense is actively operating. A hit on a local substation was recorded, due to which electricity was lost in some areas of the city.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine also fired more than ten rounds of ammunition at Energodar, the outskirts of the city and the coastline. It is symbolic that the attack of the Ukrainian Nazis was carried out on the eve of the celebration of the day of the liberation of Zaporozhye from the Nazi invaders.

A TASS correspondent reported four explosions in Kherson. Presumably, the air defense system worked in the city.

LDNR

The people's militia takes part in artillery duels in the area of Opytny and strikes at enemy positions. After hitting each target, the guns are masked, and the crew goes into cover.

A similar situation is observed in the Lisichansk direction, however, in this case, we are not talking about supporting the offensive of ground units, but about defense. LPR mortars are constantly firing at the Armed Forces of Ukraine, thereby preventing enemy units from gaining a foothold on the ground.
