A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that contingents of mobilised Russian reservists have been deployed to Ukraine over the last two weeks. Their average level of personal equipment is almost certainly lower than the already poor provision of previously deployed troops. Many reservists are likely required to purchase their own body armour, especially the modern 6B45 vest, which is meant to be on general issue to combat units as part of the Ratnik personal equipment programme. This vest has been selling on Russian online shopping sites for 40,000 roubles (approx. USD $640), up from around 12,000 roubles (appox. USD $190) in April.

In 2020, the Russian authorities announced that 300,000 sets of Ratnik body armour had been supplied to the Russian military, which was ample to equip the force currently deployed in Ukraine. Endemic corruption and poor logistics remain one of the underlying causes of Russia's poor performance in Ukraine.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russia continues to focus its efforts on attempts to reach the administrative border of Donetsk oblast, as well as holding captured districts of Kharkiv, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv and Kherson oblasts. Russia is shelling the positions of Ukraine troops along the entire contact line, carrying out engineering equipment of the positions in certain directions and conducting aerial reconnaissance. Violating the norms of International Humanitarian Law, the laws and customs of war, it strikes critical infrastructure and the homes of the civilian population.

During the day, Russian occupiers launched 4 rocket and 17 airstrikes, carried out up to 10 attacks from multiple rocket launchers. The objects and civilians of more than 20 settlements were hit by Russian forces. Among them are Kostyantynivka, Bilohirya, Ivanivka, Nikopol, Bakhmut, Soledar, Yakovlivka, Davydiv Brid and Nalyvaikivka. Infrastructural facilities in Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv and other regions were affected. For strikes, Russian forces used cruise, aviation and anti-aircraft guided missiles. In addition, the enemy continues to use Iranian-made Shahed-136 unmanned aerial vehicles.

The situation in the Volyn and Polissya directions has not changed significantly. There remains the threat of missile and air strikes, as well as the launch of attack UAVs from the territory of the Republic of Belarus.

The enemy fired in other directions:

    in the Siversky direction - from mortars, barrel and rocket artillery, in the areas of Senkivka, Progres of Chernihiv oblast and Pavlivka, Dmytrivka, Mezenivka, Bachivsk, Sosnivka of Sumy oblast.
    in the Slobozhanskyi direction - from tanks, mortars, barrel and jet artillery, in the areas of the settlements of Vovchanski Khutory, Hatyshche, Lyptsi, Ohirtseve, Starytsa, Udy. The enemy also used UAVs to adjust artillery fire;
    in the Kramatorsk direction - from tanks, mortars, barrel and jet artillery, in the areas of Verkhnokamianske, Vyshneve, Zarichne, Nadiya, Pershotravneve, Terny and Torske settlements;
    in the Bakhmut and Avdiivka directions, the enemy fired from tanks and artillery of various types along the entire contact line.

Russian forces did not carry out offensive actions in the Novopavlovskyi and Zaporizhzhia directions. More than 20 settlements were hit by fire from tanks, mortars and barrel artillery. In particular, Bilohirya, Vuhledar, Vremivka, Zaliznychne, Mykilske, Novoukrainka, Neskuchne, Orihiv, Charivne and Olhivske.

More than 35 settlements along the entire contact line were affected by fire in the South Buh direction. For air reconnaissance, Russian forces made more than 60 UAV sorties.

In the armed forces of the Russian Federation, work continues on finding possible options for replenishment of units that have suffered losses in battles on the territory of Ukraine. Thus, according to the available information, the commanders of all levels of the russian navy have begun campaigning with conscript service personnel regarding the prospects of transitioning to contract service. Military personnel are offered high benefits, an improved social package and the assurance of service beyond the front line.

The issue of material support for servicemen of the occupation forces called up for mobilization remains problematic. Thus, the arrival of a unit of the Russian Federation, whose personnel is partially dressed in civilian clothes, was marked in the city of Polohy, Zaporizhzhia region.

Units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine repelled enemy attacks in the areas of settlements of Novosadove in the Kramatorsk direction, Yakovlivka, Berestove, Bakhmut, Bakhmutske and Opytne in the Bakhmutske direction, Krasnohorivka, Nevelske, Pervomaiske, Maryinka and Pobyeda in the Avdiivka direction.

Now Aviation of the Ukraine Defence Forces carried out 30 strikes during the day. It has been confirmed that 23 areas of concentration of weapons and military equipment, as well as 7 positions of the Russian forces' anti-aircraft missile systems, have been hit. In addition, Ukraine air defence units shot down 6 UAVs and one enemy helicopter. Over the past day, missile forces and artillery hit 5 control points, 7 areas of concentration of manpower, weapons and military equipment, and 3 ammunition warehouses. Enemy artillery positions and other important military targets were also hit by fire.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported the failure of the attacks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in the Limansky, Nikolaev-Kryvyi Rih directions in the past day. The enemy positions in the Kharkov region were hit, the crossings over the Ingulets were destroyed.

As a result, over 300 enemy servicemen and about 50 pieces of equipment were liquidated. Another 160 militants were killed during an attack on the 65th brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Zaporozhye.

On the night of October 13-14, the preparation of Ukrainian units for a river landing operation in the area of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant was disrupted. In addition to fifty people, five boats, two barges, five tanks, four infantry fighting vehicles were destroyed.

The Ministry of Defense also reported on the destruction of four enemy command posts, five ammunition depots, 53 artillery batteries, and 142 areas of accumulation of units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Air defense systems shot down a Ukrainian Air Force Su-25 over Kiselevka, ten drones, including two American Switchblades, as well as 18 rockets and two anti-radar missiles.

In addition, today the RF Armed Forces successfully repulsed the attacks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Kherson region, effectively using artillery and aircraft. The enemy's mobile groups were able to go deeper into the defense, but ran into anti-tank grenade launchers. Scattered Ukrainian orders have retreated, the militants who have settled in the forest plantations are being cleared. In the future, a new wave of offensive is expected.

LDNR

Active artillery duels continue on the contact line in Donbass, the parties use drones and mobile artillery. In addition, the continued saturation of the Russian troops with modern technical means makes it possible to deliver sensitive strikes against the Armed Forces of Ukraine even in the dark.

Active clashes continue in the areas of Bakhmut, Soledar, and also west of Donetsk. The fighting here can be described as heavy: the attackers have to slowly and gradually break into the echeloned Ukrainian defenses, saturated with manpower and equipment.
