A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that, on 27 October 2022, Russian mogul Yevgeny Prigozhin posted online, apparently admitting allegations that his private military company, the Wagner Group, had altered its standards & was recruiting Russian convicts suffering from serious diseases including HIV & Hepatitis C.

The role of Wagner Group has evolved significantly since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In previous conflicts, it maintained relatively high recruitment standards, with many of its operators having previously served as professional Russian soldiers. The admission of prisoners with serious medical concerns highlights an approach which now prioritises numbers over experience or quality.

Prigozhin's has recently discussed plans to create a 200km long defensive 'Wagner Line' in eastern Ukraine. This endeavour would require a large labour force. There is a realistic possibility that some of the convict recruits will initially be put to work constructing the defences.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russia is trying to hold the temporarily captured territories, concentrates efforts on restraining the actions of the Defense Forces in certain directions, while at the same time not stopping offensive operations in the Bakhmut and Avdiivka directions. Russian forces continue shelling units of the Defense Forces along the contact line, carries out fortification equipment of the lines in separate directions and conducts aerial reconnaissance. Strikes critical infrastructure and civilian homes, violating international humanitarian law, laws and customs of war.

During the current day, Russian forces launched 3 missile and 1 air strikes, carried out more than 30 MLRS attacks from rocket salvo systems. Areas of more than 15 settlements were hit by Russian attacks. Among them are Kupyansk in the Kharkiv oblast and Berezneguvate and Ochakiv in the Mykolaiv oblast.

The situation in the Volyn and Polissya directions has not changed significantly. The Republic of Belarus continues to support the armed aggression of the russian federation against Ukraine. The Russian Federation continues the transfer of individual units to the territory of the Republic of Belarus. The threat of missile strikes and the use of attack UAVs from the territory and airspace of this country remains.

The enemy shelled in other directions:

    in the Slobozhansk direction - from tanks, mortars, barrel and jet artillery, in the areas of Veterynarne, Dvorichna, Starytsa, Strilecha and Chuhunivka settlements of the Kharkiv oblast;
    in the Kupyansk and Lyman directions - from artillery of various types, in the areas of the settlements of Kislivka and Olhivka in the Kharkiv oblast, Hrekivka and Nevske in the Luhansk oblast, and Zarichne in Donetsk oblast;
    in the Bakhmut direction - from tanks, mortars, barrel and rocket artillery, in the areas of Andriivka, Bakhmut, Mayorsk, Nevske, Opytne, Siversk and Soledar settlements of the Donetsk oblast;
    in the Avdiivka direction - from tanks, mortars, barrel and jet artillery in the areas of Avdiivka, Vodyane, Nevelske, Krasnohorivka, Maryinka, Oleksandropil settlements of the Donetsk oblast;
    on the Novopavlivskyi and Zaporizhzhia directions, the enemy inflicted fire damage in the areas of Bohoyavlenka, Vremivka, Vuhledar, Novopil and Prechistivka settlements of the Donetsk oblast and Zaliznychne, Malynivka, Novodanilivka, Olhivske, Charivne and Chervone settlements of the Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Areas of about 20 settlements along the contact line were affected by fire in the South Buzka direction.

The occupation authorities of the temporarily occupied territory of the Kherson region are trying to create conditions unsuitable for the local civilian population in the controlled territory. Thus, in Nova Kakhovka, since October 29 of this year, access to the Internet has been turned off and, through loudspeakers, they are spreading information about the need to leave the region within 48 hours due to the threat of allegedly missile strikes by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Medical personnel of local hospitals and operational services of the city are subject to priority so-called "evacuation". In addition, the occupation authorities issued a decree obliging entrepreneurs to sell off all food products and close shops and markets from November 1, 2022.

According to available information, Russia is taking preparatory measures to withdraw artillery units from the right-bank part of the Kherson region, with their subsequent possible transfer to other directions.

During the day, the aviation of the Defense Forces struck the enemy 5 times: 1 - on the area of concentration of weapons and military equipment, 2 - on platoon strongholds, as well as 2 - on the positions of the Russian forces' air defense complexes. Units of missile troops and artillery hit one control point of the Russian occupiers during the current day.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that the Russian army repelled a series of local offensives of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in the Kupyansky, Limansky, Nikolaev-Krivoy Rog directions, and also advanced south of Donetsk, occupying Novomikhailovka and Vladimirovka. The total losses of the enemy per day at the same time amounted to more than 580 military personnel, three tanks, 14 armored cars, 35 vehicles, eight infantry fighting vehicles, five armored personnel carriers.

Artillery and aircraft also hit the Armed Forces communications center in Belyaevka, the ammunition depot in Kupyansk, the training center for special operations forces in Ochakovo, 68 artillery units and 189 enemy troop concentration areas.

During counter-battery combat, an M777 howitzer, two HIMARS and one MARS-2 rocket launchers, as well as an AN / TPQ-37 counter-battery combat radar were destroyed.

Fighter aircraft and air defense forces shot down a Su-25 and three MI-8s of the Ukrainian Air Force. Ten drones, 33 rockets and six anti-radar missiles were intercepted.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation separately notes that Ukraine does not stop shelling Energodar and the territory adjacent to the Zaporozhye NPP, despite the presence of representatives of the IAEA. During the day, three artillery attacks by the Armed Forces of Ukraine from Novokievka were recorded.

In the area of Davydov Brod today, another attack of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was repelled, the scattered enemy retreated into the forest.

The situation in the Donbass

The offensive in the area of Ugledar continues. The assault groups are supported by armored vehicles that fire from covered positions. The fact is that drones are used here for adjustment, because of which the tanks hit their targets without falling under the line of sight of the enemy.

In the morning, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that troops had entered Pavlovka, and by evening, reports began to appear about the success of Russian troops in this settlement. Military expert Boris Rozhin notes that the allied forces have entrenched themselves there, but points out that it is too early to talk about the complete liberation of the village. Meanwhile, fierce battles continue in the areas of n. p. Experienced and Pervomaiskoye.
