Russo-Ukraine War - 02 October 2022 - Day 221
A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.
On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]
The UK Ministry of Defence reported that on 1 October 2022 the Russian force in the Donetsk Oblast town of Lyman withdrew in the face of Ukrainian advances. Lyman was likely being defended by undermanned elements of Russia’s Western and Central Military Districts as well as contingents of voluntarily mobilised reservists. The force probably experienced heavy casualties as it withdrew along the only road out of the town still in Russian hands.
Operationally, Lyman is important because it commands a key road crossing over the Siversky Donets River, behind which Russia has been attempting to consolidate its defences. Russia’s withdrawal from Lyman also represents a significant political setback given that it is located within Donetsk Oblast, a region Russia supposedly aimed to ‘liberate’ and has attempted to illegally annex.
The withdrawal has led to a further wave of public criticism of Russia’s military leadership by senior officials. Further losses of territory in illegally occupied territories will almost certainly lead to an intensification of this public criticism and increase the pressure on senior commanders.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russia continues to focus its efforts on attempts to occupy the Donetsk oblast, hold the captured territories, as well as disrupt the active actions of the Ukrainian Defence Forces in certain directions. Russian forces are shelling the positions of Ukrainian troops along the contact line, conducting aerial reconnaissance. Attacks civilian infrastructure and civilian homes, violating international humanitarian law, laws and customs of war. There remains the threat of the Russian forces launching air and missile strikes on the entire territory of Ukraine.
During the current day, the Russian occupiers carried out four missile and three air strikes, carried out more than fifteen MLRS attacks on military and civilian objects on the territory of Ukraine. More than fifteen settlements were affected by enemy strikes. Among them are Ridkodub, Kryvyi Rih, Zaporizhzhya, Zaliznychne and Mykolayiv. The situation in the Volyn and Polissya directions has not changed significantly.
In other directions, the enemy fired from tanks, mortars, barrel and rocket artillery:
in the Siverskyш direction - in the areas of Hrynivka and Buchka settlements of Chernihiv oblast and Seredyna Buda, Muraveynya, Fotovyzh of Sumy region;
in the Slobozhanskyi direction - in the areas of the settlements of Vovchansk and Gatishche;
in the Kramatorsk direction – Bilohorivka and Verkhnokamianske;
in the Bakhmut direction – Rozdolivka, Vesele, Yakovlivka, Soledar, Bakhmutske, Bakhmut, Klishchiyivka, Odradivka, Zaitseve, Mayorsk, New York and Yuryivka;
in the Avdiyivka direction - in the areas of Avdiyivka, Netaylove, Pervomaiske, Vodyane, Opytne, Krasnohorivka, Kurakhove, Maryinka and Novomykhailivka.
Russian forces did not conduct active offensive actions in the Novopavlivsk and Zaporizhzhya directions. It carried out shelling in the areas of settlements of Novopil, Novosilka, Vremivka, Velyka Novosilka, Neskuchne, Novoukrainka, Zaliznychne, and Hulyaipole.
More than 40 settlements along the contact line were hit by fire in the Southern Buh direction. For conducting reconnaissance and aiming artillery, Russian forces made more than seventy UAV flies.
Thanks to the successes of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, a decrease in the level of morale and psychological state of Russian personnel was noted in some directions, which leads to numerous cases of servicemen being captured and leaving their positions. Before the liberation of the settlement of Lyman, separate Russian units tried to withdraw deep into the temporarily occupied territories. Thus, on September 30, a convoy of civilian cars and minibuses was discovered in the area of the settlement of Shchastya, in which there were more than 200 servicemen from the 2nd Army Corps of the Russian occupation forces.
Delays and reductions in the level of promised payments for participation in the so-called "special military operation" on the territory of Ukraine have a negative impact on servicemen of the armed forces of the Russian Federation.
According to detailed information, it was confirmed that Russian personnel and military equipment were destroyed on the first of October, namely, the destruction of an ammunition warehouse of the Russian forces in the area of Tavriyske settlement of the Kherson region and the destruction of seven tanks and up to ten vehicles in the Chernihivka region of the Zaporizhya region. Information on personnel losses is being clarified.
During the current day, units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine repelled enemy attacks in the areas of Zaytseve, Bakhmutske, Bakhmut, Odradivka, Pervomaiske, Spirne and Vyimka settlements.
Aviation of the Defense Forces carried out four strikes during the day. The destruction of two places of accumulation of weapons and military equipment, as well as two anti-aircraft missile systems of the Russian forces , was confirmed. In addition, Ukrainian air defense units shot down eight Iranian Shahed attack drones.
Missile forces and artillery during the current day, in particular, hit five command posts, fourteen areas of concentration of manpower, weapons and military equipment, three warehouses with ammunition and fuel and oil, as well as more than fifteen other important objects of the Russian occupiers.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that as a result of strikes on units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in the Kharkiv region and the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), more than 300 enemy servicemen, 47 pieces of equipment were destroyed, and another 320 militants were injured.
Kyiv tried to launch an offensive in the areas of Davydov Brod, Bruskinsky and Kostromka, while losing more than 400 people, 43 tanks and 89 pieces of other military equipment.
Separately, it is noted that during a strike on the building of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in Dnipro on September 29, 35 people were liquidated, including foreign advisers. Another 40 employees of the department are listed as missing.
Meanwhile, over the past day, the command post of the 46th brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Bila Krinitsa, the points of temporary deployment of the 128th brigade in Arkhangelsk, the training base of the 9th regiment of the National Guard of Ukraine in Zaporozhye, seven ammunition depots, and the S-300 anti-aircraft complex guidance radar were hit. , as well as 178 areas of accumulation of enemy forces and 51 artillery units.
The air defense forces intercepted eight drones, 22 rockets, as well as Tochka-U.
The People's Militia of the Lugansk People's Republic (LPR) supports the offensive of the allied forces on Soledar and Bakhmut. In these areas, artillery is actively used on both sides, and counter-battery combat is being waged. The servicemen note that in September the resistance of the Ukrainian army increased significantly.
Volunteers from Alchevsk, with the support of the People's Militia of the LPR, delivered humanitarian aid to Severodonetsk. We are talking about food, hygiene products, as well as gasoline generators.
