A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that, on 08 October 2022, the Russian Ministry of Defence (MOD) announced that General Sergei Surovikin had been appointed as overall commander of its Joint Group of Forces conducting the 'special military operation' in Ukraine. Surovikin has previously commanded the Russian Aerospace Forces and, more recently, the Southern Grouping of Forces on operations in Ukraine.

For much of its operation, Russia has likely lacked a single empowered field commander. General Alexandr Dvornikov likely held the role for a period between April and August 2022, but it is unclear whether he was able to effectively exercise control over the often disparate and competing groupings of forces.

Surovikin' s appointment likely reflects an effort by the Russian national security community to improve the delivery of the operation. However, he will likely have to contest with an increasingly factional Russian MOD which is poorly resourced to achieve the political objectives it has been set in Ukraine.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that, during the current day, Russian forces again launched a massive missile attack, used almost thirty cruise missiles on Ukriane, carried out seven airstrikes and carried out about twenty-five MLRS attacks. Thirty-two air targets were destroyed by units of air defense of Ukraine in different directions. These are 21 cruise missiles and 11 unmanned aerial vehicles.

As a result of the massive missile attack, the infrastructure of more than ten settlements in the Lviv, Vinnytsia, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk oblasts were damaged. At night, Russian forces deployed eight Iranian attack UAVs, trying to damage critical infrastructure facilities in the Mykolaiv region. All these "drones" were destroyed by the air defense forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The situation in the Volyn and Polissya directions has not changed significantly. In other directions, the enemy fired mortars, tanks, barrel and rocket artillery in the areas of populated areas:
in the Siversky direction - Tymonovichi and Yanzhulivka of Chernihiv oblast;
in the Slobozhansk direction – Sotnytskyi Kozachok, Odnorobivka, Udy, Veterynarne and Kozacha Lopan;
in the Kramatorsk direction – Raihorodok, Novoyehorivka, Hrekivka, Makiivka, Nove, Novolyubivka, Yampolivka, Torske and Spirne;
in the direction of Bakhmut - Vesele, Bilohorivka, Yakovlivka, Soledar, Bakhmutske, Bakhmut, Odradivka, Opytne, Mayorsk and New York;
in the Avdiivka direction - Berdychi, Avdiivka, Kamianka, Pervomaiske, Vodyane, Nevelske, Krasnohorivka, Maryinka and Novomykhailivka;
on the Novopavlivsk and Zaporizhzhia directions - Uspenivka, Neskuchne, Poltavka, Vuhledar, Zaliznychne, Malynivka, Charivne and Biloghirya.

In the South Buh direction, Russian forces continues shelling the positions of Ukrianian units to deter the counterattack along the entire contact line. Areas of more than twenty settlements were affected by fire. Among them are Davydiv Brid, Nova Kamianka, Blahodativka, Shyroke, Shevchenkove, Lyubomyrivka, Ternovi Pody, Pravdyne, Myrne and Oleksandrivka.

Mobilization and transfer of reserves by Russia do not provide an opportunity to overcome the resistance of the Ukrianian defenders. Meanwhile, riots among the mobilized continue in Russia. Thus, according to available information, at one of the training grounds of the Eastern Military District, due to the low level of provision, non-compliance with sanitary standards, inadequate food and lack of normal living conditions, more than a hundred mobilized refuse to comply with any command orders and leave the barracks.

During the current day, units of the Defence Forces of Ukraine repelled the attacks of the occupiers in the areas of Mykolaivka, Soledar, Bakhmutske, Bakhmut, Mayorsk and Pervomaiske settlements.

It has been confirmed that the area where the Russian forces' manpower and military equipment are concentrated in the Kherson region has been destroyed. According to available information, up to a hundred occupiers and about thirty pieces of weapons and military equipment were destroyed.

In the Zaporizhzhia oblast, the Ukrianian Defence Forces damaged the S-300 anti-aircraft missile complex, up to ten units of military equipment and about sixty servicemen of the Russian occupation forces in the previous days.

During the current day, the aviation of the Ukrianian Defence Forces made two strikes on the areas of concentration of weapons and military equipment of the enemy. Missile troops and artillery hit one control post, nine areas of concentration of manpower, weapons and military equipment, five air defence systems and four ammunition depots.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) carried out local offensives in the Kupyansky, Limansky, Zaporozhye and Nikolaev-Kryvyi Rih directions, the Russian Defense Ministry reports . The enemy did not achieve success, losing 320 troops, seven tanks and 37 units of other military equipment. In addition, an attempt by Ukrainian troops to cross the Zherebets River in the districts of Raygorodok and Novovodyanoe was thwarted, and pontoon crossings were destroyed.

Aviation and artillery of the Russian Armed Forces hit the command post of the 66th brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the village of Novoe, 46 artillery units, 156 enemy troop concentration areas, two fuel depots, five ammunition depots.

A Mi-24 helicopter of the Ukrainian Air Force was shot down over Maryansky. In addition, anti-aircraft troops intercepted seven drones, including the American Switchblade, as well as 15 rockets and six anti-radar missiles.

Governor of the Belgorod region Vyacheslav Gladkov today announced the impact of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the electrical substation in Shebekino. There were no casualties, but at least two thousand subscribers lost access to the power grid.

LDNR

The Ukrainian command is preparing for defense on the northern approaches to Bakhmut. At the same time, employees of state institutions are being evacuated from the city itself to Chasov Yar.

Russian units pushed the Armed Forces of Ukraine from Ivangrad to Kleshcheevka, captured strongholds west of Nikolaevka and northwest of the village of Zaitsevo.

In addition, the line of contact is approaching Disputed, already passing close to the gas compressor station. The advancement of the advancing detachments of the Russian Federation is complicated by the fact of abundant mining of the area.
