A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.
On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]
The UK Ministry of Defence reported that on 24 October 2022, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said that Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin will coordinate the 'development of security measures' in Russia's regions. This followed Russian President Vladimir Putin's decree introducing a new regimen of security alert levels. This measure is likely to lead to a closer interlinking of regional governors into Russia's national security system. It is a further measure to organise society as Russia's war against Ukraine continues to be under pressure.
The greater involvement of regional officials is likely at least partially designed to deflect public criticism away from the national leadership. The Kremlin pursued a similar approach during the COVID-19 crisis. However, it will likely make it more difficult for the Kremlin to insulate Russian society from the effects of the 'special military operation' in Ukraine.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russia is trying to hold the temporarily captured territories, concentrates efforts on restraining the actions of the Ukrainian Defense Forces in certain directions, while at the same time not stopping offensive operations in the Bakhmut and Avdiivka directions. During the day, Russian forces carried out three airstrikes and launched three MLRS attacks from rocket salvo systems.
In the Volyn and Polissya directions, the situation remains without significant changes. The Republic of Belarus continues to support the armed aggression of the russian federation against Ukraine, providing its territory, airspace and infrastructure. There is still a threat of missile and air strikes, including the use of attack UAVs.
The enemy shelled in other directions: the Slobozhanskyi direction - from the territory of the Russian Federation, using different types of artillery, in the areas of Chuhunivka, Strilecha, Dvorichna, Kamianka, Krasne, Starytsa settlements;
in the Kupyansk direction - from tanks, mortars, barrel and rocket artillery, in the areas of Berestov, Kislivka and Figolivka settlements;
in the Lyman direction - from tanks and artillery of various calibers, in the areas of Makiivka, Terny, Torske, Yampolivka, Spirne, Nevske and Zarichne settlements;
in the Bakhmut direction - from tanks, mortars, barrel and rocket artillery, in the areas of Andriivka, Bakhmut, Bakhmutske, Kramatorsk, Soledar and Yakovlivka settlements;
in the Avdiivka direction, the enemy inflicted fire damage from mortars, barrel and rocket artillery in the areas of Avdiivka, Krasnohorivka, Maryinka, Novomykhailivka, and Pervomaiske.
On the Novopavlivskyi and Zaporizhzhia a directions, Russian forces launched artillery fire in the areas of Bilohirya, Vremivka, Zaliznychne, Novopol, Novosilka, Olhivskyi, and Orihiv. Areas of more than 15 settlements near the contact line were affected by fire in the South Buh direction.
The issue of material and technical support of units of the Russian occupying forces, which take direct part in hostilities on the territory of Ukraine, remains problematic. Thus, according to available information, the lack of warm clothes led to an increase in the number of cases of theft and looting by servicemen of the armed forces of the Russian Federation in the temporarily occupied territory of the Kherson oblsast.
Mobilized military personnel who arrived in the area to perform combat missions did not undergo appropriate training and lack practical skills in the use of basic types of weapons. This leads to significant losses of Russian manpower.
The unsatisfactory condition of the military equipment that was removed from storage and arrived to replenish current losses was the result of rare cases of desertion and surrender of the Russian occupiers to the Defense Forces of Ukraine. According to preliminary information, a significant part of the weapons and military equipment that the occupiers sent to the Donetsk and Novopavliv directions are of limited or completely unsuitable for combat use. In particular, we are talking about T-62 tanks removed from long-term storage.
During the previous days, the destruction of two ammunition warehouses and a pontoon crossing with Russian military equipment in the Kherson oblast was confirmed.
The aviation of Ukrainian the Defense Forces, of the current day, made 14 strikes on the areas of concentration of Russian manpower, weapons and military equipment. During the day, Ukrainian air defense units shot down an enemy helicopter and a plane - according to preliminary information, a Ka-52 "Alligator" and a Su-25 attack aircraft. Units of rocket troops and artillery hit two areas of concentration of Russian manpower, weapons and military equipment.
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) do not abandon their attempts to attack the positions of the Russian Armed Forces in the Kupyansk direction. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the allies repelled an attack by nationalist formations and foreign mercenaries in the direction of Nikolaevka and Orlyanka in the Kharkov region. The enemy lost up to 60 militants, a tank, 6 armored vehicles and 3 pickup trucks.
Also, the offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Nikolaev-Krivoy Rog direction was repulsed. Two reinforced company tactical groups of Ukrainian troops advanced towards the settlements of Malaya Aleksandrovka, Kherson region, and Ternovye Pody, Mykolaiv region, controlled by the Russian Armed Forces. After the opening of fire from the Russian side, the nationalists retreated to their starting lines, over 60 servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, 6 armored vehicles and 7 cars were liquidated.
In addition, the Russian Armed Forces destroyed a defense enterprise in the Pavlograd region of the Dnepropetrovsk region, which produced solid rocket fuel, explosives and gunpowder for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The situation in Donbass
RIA Novosti, citing sources in the power structures of the Lugansk People's Republic, reports that Ukrainian troops intend to strike at a medical facility in the city of Svatovo. After that, Kyiv plans to place the blame for the casualties and destruction on Russia. According to journalists, the information was received from a soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine who refused to carry out a criminal order. Also, this information was confirmed by intelligence of the LPR.
Ukrainian nationalists shelled Donetsk, Gorlovka, Yasinovataya, Panteleimonovka, Golmovsky and Zaitsevo in the afternoon. Because of this, more than 50 thousand subscribers were left without electricity in the capital of the DPR. Seven substations have been de-energized: Yuzhnaya, Prodmash, Trudovskaya, Voznesenka, Shakhty No. 29, Rutchenkova and Chelyuskintsev.
