A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that in the last two weeks, Russia has likely redeployed major elements of the VDV (airborne forces) to the Donetsk and Luhansk fronts in the Donbas. From September to October, most of the severely weakened VDV units were dedicated to the defence of Russian-held territory west of the Dnipro River in Kherson Oblast. Some VDV units have likely been reinforced with mobilised reservists. Although these poorly trained personnel will dilute VDV's supposedly elite capability, Russia will likely still allocate these units to sectors deemed especially important. Potential operational tasks for the VDV include supporting the defence of the Kremina-Svatove area in Luhansk Oblast or reinforcing offensive operations against the Donetsk Oblast town of Bakhmut.

The UK Ministry of Defence also reported that Russia was using Iranian drones to strike the Ukrainian electrical grid and are likely targeting medical facilities, making life even tougher for Ukrainians facing a harsh winter. Despite this bombardment, the Ukrainian military have neutralised the majority of attacks.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russia continues armed aggression against the Ukrainian state. It tries to hold the temporarily captured territories, concentrates its efforts on restraining the actions of the Defence Forces, carries out engineering equipment of defensive lines, continues to conduct offensive operations in certain areas, moves personnel, weapons and military equipment to the areas of hostilities.

During the current day, the Tussian occupiers carried out 2 airstrikes, carried out 16 MLRS attacks on the positions of Ukrainian troops and civilian objects.

In the Volyn and Polissya directions, the situation has not changed significantly, and no signs of the formation of Russian offensive groups have been detected.
In the Siverskyi direction in the border areas of the Bryansk and Kursk regions, Russian forces continue to perform the task of covering the section of the russian-Ukrainian border, conducting demonstration and provocative actions. The areas of the settlements of Hai, Khrinivka and Yasna Polyana in the Chernihiv oblast and Basivka and Seredyna-Buda in the Sumy region were shelled with artillery.
In the Slobozhanskyi direction, from the border areas of the Bilhorod region, Russian forces shelled the areas of the settlements of Huryiv, Strilecha, Lyptsi, Zelene, Starytsa, Ohirtseve, Fiholivka, and Dvorichna in the Kharkiv oblast with mortars, barrel and rocket artillery. An Russian strike UAV was operating in the area of Zelene settlement.
In the Kupyansk and Lyman directions, the Russian occupiers shelled, in particular, the districts of Berestove, Andriivka, Kurylivka, Kupyansk, and Kislivka of the Kharkiv oblast; Ploschanka and Makiivka in the Luhansk oblast and Yampolivka and Toretsk in the Donetsk region.
In the Bakhmut and Avdiivka directions, the Russian invaders are concentrating their main efforts on conducting offensive actions. Russian shelling of objects in the areas of Bilohorivka, Soledar, Bakhmutske, Bakhmut, New York, Berdychi, Avdiivka, Opytne, Marinka and Krasnohorivka settlements of the Donetsk oblast was recorded. Russian forces also carried out airstrikes near Spirne, Nevelsky and Kamianka.
In the Novopavlivsk and Zaporizhzhia directions, the Russian occupiers are defending the previously captured lines. Areas of Oleksandropil, Novobakhmutivka, Velyka Novosilka, Vuhledar, Vremivka, and Zolota Nyva settlements in the Donetsk oblast and Zeleniy Hay, Dorozhnianka, Orihiv, Shcherbaki, and Kam'yanske in Zaporizhzhia oblast were affected by the fire.
In the Kryvyy Rih and Kherson directions, Russia is improving the fortification equipment and logistical support of the advanced units. Used artillery of various calibers for shelling of Prydnipryanske, Dnipropetrovsk oblast; Mykhailivka, Kachkarivka, Mylovo, Zmiivka, Ivanivka, Antonivka and Chornobayivka in the Kherson oblast and the city of Kherson itself.

According to available information, Russian forces intensified counter-sabotage and police measures in the temporarily occupied territories of the Skadovsky district of the Kherson oblast in connection with the effective fire damage to the objects of the Russian occupation forces. In particular, in the settlements of Novomykolaivka and Krasne, on November 22 of this year, the Russian occupiers checked the houses, telephones and documents of local residents.

During the current day, the aviation of the Defense Forces made 12 strikes on the areas of concentration of Russian personnel, weapons and military equipment and 2 hits on the positions of Russian anti-aircraft missile systems.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported on the defeat of all designated targets during a large-scale series of attacks on Ukraine on November 23. We are talking about the disabling of energy facilities, one of the consequences of which was the violation of the transfer of reinforcements, equipment and weapons for the Ukrainian army by rail. Separately, it is emphasized that all cases of explosions within the boundaries of Kyiv are associated with the fall of anti-aircraft missiles fired by the army of the Kyiv regime.

As a result of the fighting, more than 125 soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) were liquidated or wounded in a day, 17 units of various military equipment were destroyed. Also hit were two command posts, 63 artillery units, 152 enemy troop concentration areas.

In addition, three counter-battery radars and four drones were destroyed.

Today, an exchange of prisoners of war with Ukraine was carried out, within the framework of which 50 people returned to Russian territory. The soldiers will be taken to Moscow, where they will receive medical and psychological assistance.

The situation in Donbass

There is a lull in the Starobelsky direction, the parties are waging a positional war, artillery skirmishes and trying to send sabotage groups to each other's rear.

Apparently, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are preparing a major offensive here after the ground freezes: the 14th and 92nd Ukrainian brigades are being rotated, reserves are being accumulated in the Kharkiv region, including from the Kherson region.

The line of contact has not undergone significant changes in the Bakhmut and Soledar sectors, but fierce battles continue here, in which the parties actively resort to counterattacks. A significant part of the road bridges here are deliberately blown up, and mining is widely used.

Russian units are advancing on Kurdyumovka after clearing Mayorsk, and five platoon strongholds have been captured west of Zaitsevo. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are concentrating reserves in Toretsk and Kirovo.
