A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.
On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]
The UK Ministry of Defence reported that by 12 November 2022, the Russian military had almost certainly completed the withdrawal of forces which had been holding territory west of the Dnipro River.
With the abandonment of Kherson city, Russia has made the Azov Sea port town of Henichesk a 'temporary capital' of the occupied region. Russia will likely also redeploy military command units to the Henichesk area.
The choice of this area as a command node hints at the priorities and concerns of Russian commanders as they consolidate their defences in southern Ukraine. It is well positioned to coordinate action against potential Ukrainian threats from both Kherson city in the west, or via Melitopol to the north-east, and to receive reinforcements from Crimea. Above all, it is currently out of range of Ukrainian artillery systems which have inflicted heavy damage on Russian field command posts.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the Russian occupiers are trying to keep the temporarily captured territories, are concentrating their efforts on restraining the actions of the Defence Forces of Ukraine in certain areas, and are continuing to equip defensive lines on the left bank of the Dnieper. At the same time, Russia is conducting offensive actions in the Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Novopavlivka directions.During this day, Russian forces launched a massive missile attack on the military and civilian infrastructure of several regions of Ukraine. The results of the Air Defense Forces of Ukraine and the consequences of Russian attacks on critical infrastructure facilities are currently being clarified. In addition, Russian forces do not stop shelling the positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements along the contact line.
The situation in the Volyn and Polissya directions has not changed significantly. The Republic of Belarus continues to support the armed aggression of the russian federation against Ukraine, providing it with infrastructure, territory and airspace. The threat of Russia launching missile and air strikes from the territory and airspace of the Republic of Belarus remains.
The enemy shelled in other directions:
-
in the Siversky direction - from barrel artillery, in the areas of Ryzhivka, Kindrativka, Slavhorod settlements of the Sumy oblast;
in the Slobozhansk direction - from mortars, barrel and rocket artillery, in the areas of Stariysa and Bochkove settlements;
in the Kupyansk and Lyman directions - from the entire variety of artillery, in the areas of the settlements of Nevske, Kyslivka, Rozdolivka, Ploshanka, Makiivka, Spirne;
in the Bakhmut direction - from tanks, mortars, barrel and rocket artillery in the areas of the settlements of Bakhmut, Bilohorivka and New York;
in the Avdiyivka direction - from artillery of various types, in the areas of settlements of Novomykhailivka, Vodyane and Nevelske;
in the Novopavlivka and Zaporizhzhya directions - from mortars, barrel and jet artillery, in the areas of the settlements of Prechystivka, Pavlivka, Vremivka, Zaliznychne, Stepnohirsk, Mali Shcherbaky;
in the Kherson direction - from mortars, barrel and jet artillery, in the area of the settlement of Dobra Nadiya.
As a result of fire damage in the area of Kreminna settlement of Luhansk oblast, the Russian invaders lost control of individual units. The personnel of these units plans to escape from their borders and retreat to the city. And in the city of Kadiivka, in the Luhansk region, Russian forces go from house to house and carry out forced mobilization of the local population. In some areas of the temporarily occupied territory of the Luhansk oblast, there are cases of extortion of money for the possibility of avoiding mobilization. Thus, in the Starobilsky district, representatives of local so-called "force structures" offer to avoid "mobilization" for a monetary reward of up to 15 thousand dollars.
The results of Russian fire damage have been confirmed. Thus, in the area of the settlement of Blagovishchenka, Zaporizhzhia oblast, the occupiers lost up to 10 dead. Also, 5 units of military equipment, a warehouse of ammunition were destroyed, and 35 invaders were wounded. In Melitopol, the enemy lost more than 50 people wounded.
In the Skadovsk and Henichesk districts, separate occupation units are leaving the settlements and leaving in the direction of the temporarily occupied Crimea.
During the current day, units of missile forces and artillery of the Ukrainian Defense Forces hit 4 areas of concentration of Russian manpower, weapons and military equipment, 2 ammunition warehouses and one important military object of the Russian occupiers.
The Russian Ministry of Defence reported that, in accordance with the statement of the Russian Ministry of Defense, the Russian army over the past day hit six command posts of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in the Kharkiv and Kherson regions, as well as in the DPR and LPR. In addition, strikes were made on 82 artillery units and 178 enemy troop concentration areas. An ammunition depot was destroyed in Krasnogorovka.
At the same time, air defense systems shot down seven enemy drones and three rockets launched by HIMARS installations.
During the day, the RF Armed Forces continued to strike at the energy and military infrastructure of the enemy in all regions of Ukraine and fight in strategic directions.
Also today, Vladimir Putin signed decrees conferring the title "City of Military Glory" to Mariupol and Melitopol. As part of the videoconference, where the relevant issue was discussed, the President noted that this event "emphasizes the commonality of historical memory" and lays a valuable foundation for uniting the residents of these settlements.
In addition, the title of "City of Labor Valor" for the contribution to the victory in the Great Patriotic War was awarded to nine more cities of the Russian Federation, including Gorlovka and Lugansk.
Late in the evening, information appeared about the attack of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the city of Shebekino, Belgorod Region. The governor of the region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said that at least two people were killed and three were injured as a result of the strike on the border town.
The situation in the Donbass
Throughout the day, the Armed Forces of Ukraine launched a series of artillery strikes on the Olshana-Pervomaiskoye-Orlyanka-Yagodnoe line, adjusting the fire using drones.
Also, the 92nd brigade of the enemy army attacked in the direction of Stelmahovka, entrenched itself on the outskirts and headed towards Kuzemovka. Nevertheless, the attackers were met by heavy flamethrower systems (TOS) of the RF Armed Forces and rolled back to their original lines.
The newly arrived 25th brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was thrown into battle at the positions of Russian troops in the Krasnopopovka area, but was not successful and was forced to retreat.
The battles for Belogorovka continue, the troops of the Kyiv regime have rotated. The Ukrainian sabotage group carried out reconnaissance in battle near Zolotarevka, retreating after an artillery strike on it.
