A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that imagery showed two MiG-31K FOXHOUND interceptor jets were almost certainly parked at Belarus's Machulishchi Airfield on 17 October, with a large canister stored nearby within a protective earth berm. It is likely that the canister is associated with the AS-24 KILLJOY air launched ballistic missile, a large munition which the MiG-31K variant is adapted to carry.

Russia has fielded KILLJOY since 2018, but it has not previously been deployed in Belarus. Russia has occasionally launched these weapons during the Ukraine war, but stocks are likely very limited. It continues to expend its advanced long-range munitions against targets of limited operational importance.

With a range of over 2000km, basing KILLJOY in Belarus gives Russia little added advantage in terms of striking additional targets within Ukraine. It has likely carried out the deployment mainly to message to the West and to portray Belarus as increasingly complicit in the war.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russia is trying to keep the temporarily captured territories, concentrates efforts on restraining the actions of the Defense Forces in certain directions. Conducts offensive actions in the Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Novopavlivsky directions. Russia is shelling units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces along the contact line, carrying out border fortification equipment in separate directions and conducting aerial reconnaissance. It continues to strike critical infrastructure and civilian homes in violation of International Humanitarian Law, the laws and customs of war.

During the day, Russian forces launched 4 missile and 26 air strikes, carried out more than 27 MLRS attacks. Areas of more than 20 settlements were hit by Russian attacks. Among them are Mykilske of the Zaporizhzhia oblast, Poltava, Kramatorsk, Nikopol and Mykolaiv.

The threat of new strikes and the use of attack drones remains, in particular from the territory of the Republic of Belarus. The situation in the Volyn and Polissya directions has not changed significantly. The Republic of Belarus continues to support the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.

Russian forces shelled in other directions:

    in the Siversky direction - from mortars and barrel artillery, in the areas of Senkivka and Hai settlements of Chernihiv oblast, as well as Oleksandrivka and Vovkivka of Sumy oblast;
    in the Slobozhansk direction - from artillery of various types, in the areas of the settlements of Vilkhuvatka, Vovchansk, Kozacha Lopan, Krasne, Mylove, Starytsa, Strilecha, Veterynarne and Chuhunivka;
    in the Kupyansk and Lymansk directions - from mortars, barrel and rocket artillery, in the areas of the settlements of Dvorichna, Kucherivka, Kupyansk, Kiselivka, Berestove, Hrekivka, Nevske, Osynove, Terny, as well as Torske;
    in the Bakhmut direction - from artillery of various types, in the areas of Zelenopillya, Berestove, Bakhmut, Bakhmutske, Ivanhrad, Soledar, Spirne, Bilogorivka, Opytne and Yakovlivka settlements;
    in the Avdiivka direction - from artillery of various calibers, in the areas of Avdiivka, Maryinka, Vodyane, Paraskoviivka, Krasnohorivka, Pervomaiske and Nevelske settlements;
    in the Novopavlivsk direction - from mortars, barrel and rocket artillery in the areas of the settlements of Bohoyavlenka, Pavlivka, Velyka Novosilka, Prechystivka, Vuhledar, Vremivka and Neskuchne;
    in the Zaporizhzhia direction - from the entire range of artillery weapons, in the areas of the settlements of Hulyaipilske, Zaliznychne, Dorozhnyanka, Stepove, Olhivske, Malynivka, Novodanylivka and Chervone.

Areas of settlements near the contact line were damaged by fire in the South Buh direction. The city of Nikopol was hit by Russian MLRS.

The Russian occupiers continue to forcibly relocate the civilian population in the temporarily occupied territories of the Kherson oblast. Russia is resorting to intimidation of civilian residents, spreading information about the possible undermining of the Kakhovska HPP dam. At the same time, the local population is deprived of means of communication.

The Russian occupation administration of Kherson was moved to the city of Skadovsk.

The occupying command is trying to compensate for the constant loss of personnel in enemy units that take direct part in hostilities on the territory of Ukraine with mobilized servicemen. With those who refuse to participate in combat operations, the so-called "work" is carried out by the employees of the fsb of the Russian Federation.

According to updated information, the destruction of Russia's ammunition depots in the Zaporizhzhia region was confirmed on October 29. In addition, 5 units of military equipment were destroyed as a result of fire damage to the concentration areas of the Russian occupiers. Losses of personnel are up to 30 eliminated and about 100 wounded.

During the current day, the aviation of the Ukrainian Defense Forces of Ukraine carried out 22 strikes. 19 areas of concentration of weapons and military equipment, as well as 3 positions of Russia's anti-aircraft missile systems, were affected. In different directions, Ukrainian air defense units shot down two Orlan-10 UAVs and six Shahed-136 attack drones. Ukrainian units of missile troops and artillery hit two areas of concentration of Russian manpower, weapons and military equipment, an ammunition warehouse and four other important military objects during the day.

Statements of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation

During the briefing, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that as a result of a massive strike on the objects of the communications and energy control systems of Ukraine on October 31, the control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and their logistics was significantly disrupted. The transportation of reserves and materiel to the combat areas by railway transport is significantly hampered, production at the enterprises of the military-industrial complex is disrupted.

During the day, attempts were repelled by the offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Kupyansky, Limansky and Nikolaev-Krivoy Rog directions. The Kyiv security forces suffered heavy losses both in manpower and in military equipment.

Aviation, missile forces and artillery hit 8 command posts of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), Nikolaev, Nikolaev, Kherson, Kharkiv regions, as well as 63 artillery units, manpower and military equipment in 154 districts. In addition, 3 ammunition depots were destroyed in the DPR and the Kherson region. In the area of Belogorovka (Lugansk People's Republic, LPR) and Soledar (DPR), 2 US-made AN/TPQ-50 counter-battery radars were destroyed.

Fighter aircraft in the Dnepropetrovsk region shot down a Su-24 of the Ukrainian Air Force. 9 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions were destroyed by means of air defense (air defense). A ballistic missile "Tochka-U" was shot down in the air in the Kherson region, as well as 6 shells of a multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) "Alder" in the Donetsk region.

The Russian Defense Ministry also stated that the Armed Forces of Ukraine continue attacks on Energodar and the adjacent territories of the Zaporizhzhya NPP. During the day, they fired more than 20 shells at the specified area. The shelling was carried out from the village of Marganets in the Dnepropetrovsk region, the enemy's firepower was suppressed by return fire from units of the RF Armed Forces.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu held a meeting with the leadership of the Russian Armed Forces. He said that more than 190 foreign mercenaries, 74 tanks, 235 other armored vehicles, 2 HIMARS MLRS, 268 vehicles with heavy machine guns were destroyed in Ukraine in 2 weeks.

According to the minister, the RF Armed Forces are effectively reducing the military potential of the Armed Forces of Ukraine:

"By strikes with precision weapons, we continue to effectively hit military infrastructure facilities, as well as facilities that affect the reduction of the military potential of Ukraine. At the same time, exhaustive measures are being taken to prevent the death of Ukrainian citizens."

Kherson region

The Security Service of Ukraine brought charges against the head of the Kherson seaport. The agency does not give his name, but states that he allegedly provided the transfer of Russian military equipment and ammunition for units on the right bank of the Dnieper. Now the post of head of the port is occupied by Andrey Kharitonov.

The authorities of the Kherson region expect to complete all evacuation activities within 3 days, said Acting Governor of the region Volodymyr Saldo. Earlier it was reported that about 70 thousand people are planned to be taken out of the 15-kilometer zone along the Dnieper. The reason for the expansion of the evacuation zone was the threat of damage to the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station as a result of an attack by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which could cause flooding of the left bank of the Dnieper downstream.

Zaporozhye region

The former head of the socio-economic department of the Melitopol City Council, Yuriy Zakharchuk, said that the former heads of the Ukrainian administration of the Zaporozhye region demanded that their subordinates sabotage the work of socially significant departments, and also collected data from those who remained working under the leadership of the Russian Federation in order to intimidate them.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine are training saboteurs to seize the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, Vladimir Rogov, a member of the main council of the administration of the Zaporozhye region, said. According to him, about 230 militants are being trained in the Zaporozhye region, training is taking place in an empty oil storage facility on the territory of the Zvezda plant.

DNR

During the day, Donetsk, as well as the settlements of Yasinovataya, Gorlovka, Makeevka, Yakovlevka, Volnovakha, Zaitsevo, Blagodatnoye, Krasny Partizan, were shelled by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

As a result of attacks in Blagodatnoye, 2 civilians were killed, in Donetsk, a teenager born in 2008 was injured during a mine explosion "Petal". Damage to residential buildings and civil infrastructure facilities was also recorded.

Fighting intensified in the Ugledar direction. The main efforts of the allied troops, according to available information, are focused on driving the enemy out of Pavlovka and Novomikhailovka. Russian units use artillery and aircraft to suppress the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

A hacker from the DPR "Joker" was able to hack the American DELTA command and control program for Ukrainian troops. All data on own forces and the forces of the enemy are entered into it, including the coordinates of equipment and the number of personnel.

"This program was made by Ukrainian and American specialists according to the analogy, standards and security requirements with NATO software. In addition to the interactive map, two open sources are used: "Element" and NextCloud. I also used regular Google authentication. All paths lead to the military subnet Damba.org.ua," he said.

LC

From the beginning of the day, Ukrainian troops opened fire on the settlement of Svatovo, using a 155 mm artillery gun. As a result of the impact, a medium-pressure gas pipeline was damaged.

Representatives of the Popular Front, with the support of the People's Militia of the LPR, began delivering humanitarian supplies with warm clothes to servicemen to combat positions.
