John Pike of the Federation of American Scientists said, "Given Primakov's familiarity with [intelligence] trade craft, I'd have some difficulty believing that he would accept a personal gratuity of such a trivial amount of money -- that's chump change! -- and that he would do so in a way that would be so easily detected."

• Iraq News 19 March 1999 -- For some time, the UK position has been that Saddam's overthrow, if it is to be pursued, should be pursued through a coup, rather than a popular insurgency. That although repeated attempts, since 1990, to make a coup in Iraq, have all ended in failure. In the mid-1990s MI6 pushed the CIA to shift its support from the Iraqi National Congress (INC), which was recruiting an army in Kurdish-held northern Iraq, to the rival Iraqi National Accord (INA) which MI6 had created.

• Coalition aircraft respond to Iraqi threats March 14, 1999 - INCIRLIK AIR BASE, TURKEY -- Between approximately 12:45 p.m. and 1:20 p.m. Iraqi time today, Operation Northern Watch aircraft observed Iraqi anti-aircraft artillery fire and detected Iraqi radar posing a threat to coalition aircraft. Responding in self-defense, U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles dropped GBU-12 laser guided bombs on several anti-aircraft artillery sites northwest and west of Mosul. All coalition aircraft departed the area safely.
