Iraq News by Laurie Mylroie
The central focus of Iraq News is the tension between the considerable, proscribed WMD capabilities that Iraq is holding on to and its increasing stridency that it has complied with UNSCR 687 and it is time to lift sanctions. United States Senate Office of the Majority Leader Washington, DC 20510-7010 March 1, 1999 Dr. Ahmad Chalabi President, Executive Council Iraqi National Congress 124 128 Barlby Road London W10 6BL, United Kingdom Dear Dr. Chalabi, Thank you for your letter, dated February 22, 1999, wherein you informed me of the upcoming Iraqi National Congress (INC) National Assembly meeting. I strongly endorse and welcome a meeting of the members of the INC, in order to reaffirm its commitment to democracy, respect for human rights, peaceful relations with Iraq's neighbors, and the territorial integrity of Iraq. It is of vital importance that the various Iraqi opposition groups band together in unity, all with the aim of removing the dictator Saddam Hussein from power. Recent events have underscored the importance of this objective. Saddam Hussein continues to oppress the Iraqi people, threaten his neighbors, and pose a threat to peace and security in the region. The United States must strengthen its efforts, in working with the INC, our friends and allies in the region, and others who seek a brighter future for Iraq, to replace this illegitimate and dastardly regime. I look forward to continuing our mutual efforts to this end. Again, thank you for apprising me of this important endeavor. I wish you all the best for your up-coming meeting. With best wishes, I am Sincerely Yours, Trent Lott
