A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that according to the Russian Investigative Committee, on 18 October 2024, 3 individuals were remanded in custody for charges relating to the misappropriation of real estate belonging to the Russian Ministry of Defence. The suspects include the former head of the Assets Department of Main Directorate for the Outfitting of Troops, who with the other suspects is accused of misappropriating 15 properties worth over 244 million roubles ($2.5m USD) in the Moscow Region, while administrating the bankruptcy of a Defence Ministry associated construction entity.

Separately former Russian National Guard Deputy Director Sergei Mileiko is facing corruption charges for inflating the prices of uniforms during a procurement by over 400m roubles ($4.2m USD).

Arrests and criminal proceedings against Defence and Defence Industry officials have continued apace since Spring 2024, as Russian investigative authorities almost certainly attempt to achieve a level of control over the massive scale of corruption in the Russian defence sector, for both practical and demonstrative political reasons.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the Defense Forces are directing efforts to disrupt the execution of Russian invaders' offensive plans and exhaust their combat potential.

Since the beginning of the day, there have been 185 combat clashes, Russian forces launched 64 air and three missile strikes, engaged 106 ABs and three missiles, deployed 793 kamikaze drones, launched more than 4,000 shells of settlements and positions of Ukrainian troops.

In the Kharkiv direction, Russian terrorists eight times without success stormed the positions of Ukrainian units in the area of Vovchansk. The aviation strike was suffered by the settlement of Cossack Lopany, on which the enemy dropped two controlled bombs.
Three times Russian forces attacked Ukrainian fortifications in the Kupians Триkomu direction in the areas of Kindrashivka, Novoplatonívka and Kolisnikivka.
Ten attacks of the Russian occupiers were repelled by Ukrainian soldiers near Grekivka, Nevsky, Terniv, Novomikhailivka and Serebryanka in the Lyman direction. The settlements of Zarichne, Lyman and Yampolivka were hit by controlled aviation bombs.
In the Sivers огоkomu direction, Russian forces made one attempt to appease Ukrainian defenders from occupied positions in the area of the settlement of Viymka, to the same, made an aviation strike in the areas of Zakitnogo, Dronivka and Siversk.
In the Kramatorsky direction, three Russian attempts to advance near the Time Yar ended in failure, also the Russian enemy struck with unguided missiles in the area of the settlement Novomarkove, bombarded Kramatorsky and Time Yar.
In the Toretsky direction, Russian forces today four times stormed the positions of Ukrainian defenders in the areas of Toretsk and Scherbinivka. Defense forces are steadily holding back pressure, repelling all enemy attacks.
Intensely attacks the Russian opponent of Ukrainian defenders in the Pokrovsky direction. During the day, Russian forces committed 36 offensive actions. The largest activity of Russian occupiers is kept in the areas of Mirolûbívka, Beam, Grigorívka, Cool Yaru, Petrivka, Desert, Ukrainka and Fox. Ukrainian defenders bravely hold the border, repelled 32 Russian attacks, four confrontations continue so far. The bombardment suffered a settlement of Mirnograd, on which terrorists dropped one controlled aviation bomb.
According to preliminary calculations, today Ukrainian warriors eliminated 119 and wounded 153 Russian invaders. Destroyed one tank, six combat armored cars, one unit of automobile equipment, four motorcycles and one mortar of Russians. One combat armored vehicle and two artillery systems were also damaged.
In the Kurakhiv direction at this time of the day, there are 49 combat clashes. Russian forces, supported by the aviation, tried to advance in the areas of Illinka, Novoselidivka, Vozdvizhenka, Voznesenka, Novodmitrivka, Maximilianivka, Dalnyo, Antonivka, Katerinivka, Kreminnoí̈ Balka, Sonsivka, Zory and Kurakhovy. 16 clashes are still going on. Ukrainian defenders in this direction eliminated 79 and wounded 139 invaders, in addition damaged four tanks, one armored vehicle and one Russian anti-tank missile complex.
In the Vremívs Наkomu direction, the Russian opponent was activated, during the day, eight attacks of Russian units in the areas of Trudovogo, Makarivka, Novodarivka and Rivnopol. Four fights are being sharpened so far. During the offensive actions, the Russian opponent actively used aviation in the areas of settlements Novodonetske, Maksimivka, Velika Novosilka and Green Field.
In the direction of Gulyaipils неkomu, Russian forces did not carry out offensive actions.
Near Novoandriivka, Ukrainian defenders successfully repelled one attack of Russians in the orihiv direction.
Five Russian assaults have been unsuccessful in the Pridniprovsk direction. In addition, Russian forces struck unkekorovated aviation missiles on the settlements of Odradokamianka and Vesele.
In other directions, there have been no significant changes in the environment.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that in Kharkov direction, the Sever Group of Forces hit formations of 105th, 115th, 116th, and 120th territorial defence brigades close to Volchansk, Olkhovatka, and Aleksandrovka (Kharkov region).

The AFU losses amounted to up to 95 troops, two motor vehicles, and a 122-mm D-30 howitzer.

The Zapad Group of Forces liberated Kolesnikovka of the Kharkov region. Russian units hit manpower and formations of 14th, 43rd, 60th, 63rd, 92nd mechanised brigades, 3rd Assault Brigade, and 77th Airmobile Brigade near Kupyansk, Kucherovka, Zagryzovo, Kopanki, Ostrovskoye (Kharkov region), Yampolovka, and Torskoye (Donetsk People's Republic).

The AFU losses amounted to up to 530 troops, an infantry fighting vehicle, six motor vehicles, three Polish-made 155-mm Krab self-propelled artillery systems, a UK-made 155-mm Braveheart self-propelled artillery system, a 152-mm D-20 gun, and a 122-mm D-30 howitzer.

Moreover, a Kvertus EW station and two field ammunition depots were destroyed.

The Yug Group of Forces improved the situation along the front line and inflicted losses on 24th, 28th, 30th mechanised brigades, 10th Mountain Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, 35th Marine Brigade, 124th Territorial Defence Brigade and 1st National Guard Brigade near Seversk, Slavyansk, Zvanovka, Minkovka, Nikolayevka, Chasov Yar, Predtechino, Konstantinovka and Kurakhovovoka (Donetsk People's Republic).

Four counter-attacks of the AFU 54th Mechanised Brigade, 46th, 81st airmobile brigades, and 119th Territorial Defence Brigade were repelled.

The AFU losses amounted to up to 540 troops, two armoured fighting vehicles, a U.S.-made 105-mm M119 howitzer, and a UK-made L-119 artillery system.

Four electronic warfare stations, a U.S.-made AN/TPQ-48 counter-battery radar station and two field ammunition depot were eliminated.

The Tsentr Group of Forces continued advancing into the depths of the enemy's defence, inflicted losses on manpower and hardware of 53rd, 132nd, 151st mechanised brigades, 142nd Infantry Brigade, 68th Jaeger Brigade, 38th Marine Brigade, 12th National Guard Brigade close to Dzerzhinsk, Shcherbinovka, Dimitrov, Udachnoye, Voznesenka, Novoalekseyevka, Novodmitrovka, and Novoselidovka (Donetsk People's Republic).

Eight counter-attacks of 93rd, 100th, 117th mechanised brigades, 152nd Jaeger Brigade, 5th Assault Brigade, 49th Assault Battalion, 35th Marine Brigade, and Lyut Assault Brigade of the Ukrainian National Police were repelled.

The AFU losses amounted to up to 505 troops, a tank, two U.S.-made MaxxPro armoured fighting vehicles, two Kazak armoured vehicles, five pickups, a 152-mm Msta-B howitzer, a 122-mm D-30 howitzer, and a U.S.-made AN/TPQ-50 counter-battery radar station.

The Vostok Group of Forces occupied more advantageous lines and positions, defeated formations of 33rd Mechanised Brigade, 58th Motorised Infantry Brigade, 128th Mountain Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, 37th Marine Brigade, 117th, 127th, 128th territorial defence brigades, 21st and 23rd national guard brigades close to Sukhiye Yaly, Velikaya Novoselka, Zelenoye Pole, Rovnopol (Donetsk People's Republic), and Temirovka of the Zaporozhye region.

The AFU losses amounted to up to 145 troops, an armoured fighting vehicle, and three motor vehicles.

The Dnepr Group of Forces engaged manpower and hardware of 65th, 110th mechanised brigades, 141st Infantry Brigade of the AFU, 103rd and 126th territorial defence brigades close to Novodanilovka (Zaporozhye region), Olgovka, Lvovo, Nikolskoye and Kamyshany (Kherson region).

The AFU losses amounted to up to 65 troops and four motor vehicles.

Operational-Tactical Aviation, attack UAVs, Missile Troops and Artillery of the Russian Groups of Forces have engaged the infrastructure of military airfields, a component production workshop, and the place where Sapsan operational-tactical missiles are tested, production facilities, storage and training sites for the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, arsenals, fuel depots and logistics centre of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, as well as clusters of enemy manpower and military hardware in 133 areas.

Russian air defence systems have shot down four French-made Hammer guided aerial bombs and 39 fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles.

In total, since the beginning of the special military operation, 648 aircraft, 283 helicopters, 35,551 unmanned aerial vehicles, 585 anti-aircraft missile systems, 19,167 tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles, 1,487 MLRS combat vehicles, 17,673 field artillery guns and mortars, and 28,157 units of support military vehicles have been neutralised.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation also reported that the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation continue the operation to neutralise an enemy group, which broke into the territory of Kursk region.

The Sever Group of Forces continued offensive actions and inflicted losses on formations of 21st, 22nd, 41st, 47th, 61st, 115th mechanised brigades, 17th Tank Brigade, 80th, 82nd, 95th air assault brigades, 36th Marine Brigade, 103rd, 112th and 129th territorial defence brigades of the AFU near Daryino, Leonidovo, Malaya Loknya, Nikolayevo-Daryino, Novoivanovka, and Plyokhovo.

The Group's units repelled six enemy counter-attacks in the direction of Daryino, Nikolayevo-Daryino, and Novoivanovka.

The AFU losses amounted to up to 70 people killed and wounded, a tank, two armoured personnel carriers, four armoured fighting vehicles, and a motor vehicle were neutralised. Five AFU servicemen surrendered.

Army aviation and artillery inflicted losses on clusters of manpower and hardware of 21st, 22nd, 41st 47th, 61st mechanised brigades, 17th Tank Brigade, 80th, 82nd, and 95th airborne assault brigades, 36th Marine Brigade as well as 103rd, 112th, 118th, 129th territorial defence brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and 17th National Guard Brigade of Ukraine near Agronom, Aleksandriya, Bondarevka, Guyevo, Daryino, Kazachya Loknya, Kurilovka, Lebedevka, Leonidovo, Loknya, Malaya Loknya, Martynovka, Makhnovka, Mirny, Nikolayevo-Daryino, Nikolsky, Novaya Sorochina, Novoivanovka, Plyokhovo, Sverdlikovo, and Cherkasskoye Porechnoye.

Operational-Tactical Aviation and Missile Troops have attacked concentration areas in the Sumy region and reserves of the 22nd, 41st, 44th, and 115th mechanised brigades, 17th Tank Brigade, 95th Air Assault Brigade as well as 103rd Territorial Defence Brigade of the AFU, and 1st National Guard Brigade near Basovka, Belovody, Vesyolovka, Zhuravka, and Sumy.

Over 300 troops, a tank, an infantry fighting vehicle, two armoured personnel carriers, eight armoured fighting vehicles, three artillery guns, a mortar, and seven motor vehicles of the AFU have been neutralised during the day. Five AFU servicemen surrendered.

Since the beginning of hostilities in Kursk region, the AFU losses amounted to more than 31,390 troops, 195 tanks, 127 infantry fighting vehicles, 109 armoured personnel carriers, 1,110 armoured fighting vehicles, 850 motor vehicles, 265 artillery guns, 40 MLRS launchers, including 11 of HIMARS and six of MLRS made by the USA, 11 anti-aircraft missile launchers, seven transport-loading vehicles, 62 EW stations, 12 counter-battery warfare radars, four air defence radars, 26 units of engineering and other materiel, including 13 counterobstacle vehicles, one UR-77 mine clearing vehicle, five armoured recovery vehicles, and one command post vehicle.

The operation to neutralise the AFU units is in progress.


A wider look at the Donetsk frontline, and the Russian advances south of Pokrovsk over the past 2 weeks. Russian advances south of Pokrovsk have continued and picked up pace. Russia has taken control of Selydove and continued west also capturing Vyshneve and Novooleksiivka. Further south, Russia has taken control of Hirnyk and Kurakhivka as well as 6 surrounding settlements. Another area of significant Russian advances over the past 2 weeks has been in the Vuhledar direction. Russian forces have taken control of Shakhtars'ke, Yasna Polyana, Novoukrainka, Maksymivka, Bohoyavlenka, and Katerynivka. Russia is now consolidating control along the Oskil River and is pushing both north and south of its positions on the east bank. Further southeast, Russian advances have been noted within Stel'makhivka and on the edge of Anriivka. Russia has now also taken control of the northern outskirts of the settlement of Terny. Russia has regained more territory in the north of the Ukrainian Kursk incursion, reestablishing a presence in the settlement of Pogrebki.
